  • I'm positive that someone on Gamefaqs made one.. *checks* Yeah.. here it is. I read through it couple years ago..
It's in the Firered/Leafgreen Faqs and Guides section, named 'Name Guide.' (No duh?) It's one of the best I've seen so far! =D

    *edit 100th reply! XD

Raichu rai (meaning thunder) + chu

Actually, I'm pretty sure this is from Japanese mythology. It's a mispronunciation of raiju, which was a thunder demon. In form, a cat made entirely of lightning.

  • Girafarig giraffe spelled the same forward and backward (I forgot what those words are called, like the word radar)

Those words are called PALINDROMES... XD

    ********************************************

    OK, something topic-related:

It's not hard to figure out what Crescelia is... (It's derived from crescent.)
And Manaphy is possibly derived from manatee, a sea animal.
Guillotina is just guillotine (but it doesn't learn Guillotine attack though).
Doomirror is just Doom Mirror (it's a mirror), but I have no idea what it's evolution is supposed to be though.
Buoysel and Floatsel are self explanatory - buoy and float are the same thing, and they are weasels.
Bonsly is derived from bonsai (potted miniature trees) and sly, as it knows Fake Tears.
Darcry is basically dark + cry.
Greggul is derived from the sound a frog/toad makes.
Scorpi and Drapion are just variations on scorpion.
Tamanta is just a variation on manta (ray).
Glacia and Leafia are just glacier and leaf.

That's all I can figure out from the D/P names...

Back to some old weird ones:

    Kabuto means armor in Japanese.
Togetic is toge (spikes in Jap) and chick - spiky chick.
Jirachi is a close pronunciation of желать, to wish in Russian.
Rayquaza is a derivation of ray and quasar (quasi-stellar radio source), a source of electromagnetic energy.
Gardevoir is derived from gardeur (guardian in French) and voir (to see in French).

  • Gyarados's name may be derived from a combination of 虐殺 gyakusatsu massacre/slaughter, and 逆境 gyakkyō, hardship/adversity.

Just jacked from Wikipedia. I hope it helps. ^^

  • ^ It's not named after a disease. Deoxys comes from the long term for DNA, which is deoxyribonucleic acid, if I remember correctly. [/Biology nerd]

Chibaymaga12: Meganium is just a mix of the words 'mega' and 'geranium'(A type of flower.). And the Japanese name is the same, so the same meaning applies to it as well.

    You know, if you look up a certain Pokemon on Wikipedia, you'll usually find where there names come from. XD;

  • I know some! =D

Pikachu - I always thought the "pika" part was from the animal, the pika, which is a rodent which resembles Pikachu a little, but then I learnt that "pika" is a Japanese onomatopoeia for the crackling of electricity... oh and the "chu" part is the same, for the noise a mouse makes.

Milotic - I saw that you don't have this one. I think it could be from "melodic". I also heard that it could be a pun on Nilotic, the people of the Nile Valley who were known for being gracefully slender!
