There have been a couple of gems, but by and large... no.

I think it's the same as now. A sea of decent games. A few gems that shine above the others.

The retro stuff is today's indie market

That, coupled with devs playing on nostalgia, is pretty much how I feel about it, too.

I'm sure nostalgia plays a pretty big role in some cases for me, too, but not enough that I'd say retro games were just objectively better in every way. And even with all the aesthetic improvements that gaming's seen over the years, I can't say that makes it any better, either.

There's just so many things that come together to make a game good. Every generation has seen some incredible titles, and absolute **** alike. :P

So, I just can't say that any one generation is better than another. They've all had really memorable games for me, and frankly, that's all that matters. :3

I think retro games are, well, games. What we have today is more like a cinematic experience in a lot of cases. Multiplayer seems to be where most of the actually game-y games went. Like Half-Life 2 is a very cinematic game even though you are also very involved, but Sonic the Hedgehog is a game with a bunch of rules to it that you use to reach the end of a level. You can run left and right and jump. Enemies hurt if they touch you. If you have a ring you won't die when this happens. And so on and so forth. Sure, HL2 has rules, but only as far as the mapping and what is hard coded. You don't notice most of the rules because they're natural to real life rules. Gravity exists. You fire a gun and it hurts people. You get shot and it hurts you. Those are all real life things and aren't presented the way a game would. Borderlands on the other hand sits somewhere in the middle. At least the second one and Pre Sequel do, having plenty of rules to make it a game while also maintaining a strong story line. I think comparing old stuff to new stuff just doesn't work really. You can compare games of the same genre to see how far they've come, but in general I think that Retro games are just different games, not better ones.

A new console that doesn't focus on movement as part of the entertainment. Please.

I fully support this.

Nintendo, I'm a stereotype. I'm lazy. I don't want to move a lot in order to play a game.

If I wanted to do that, I'd go outside more often.

Buying rare would be a bad decision. They're just a shovelware company now, All the good devs left. Buying the IPs back from Microsoft would be a much better decision.
The IPs, yes. But also a lot of the Rare team from back then have gone their separate ways. A handful were interested in doing something together via crowdsourcing a little while ago. That fizzled out.

Bring them all together, buy the IPs. Don't need the Rare IP. Make it happen, Nintendo

Speaking of cool stuff, Extra Life 24 hour gaming marathons anyone? I might try to do one with the Pre-Sequel. Definitely fun enough for it.

EDIT: Dear god, they're gonna speed run one of the Final Doom IWADs??? And wow why are they playing Sonic Heroes, lmfao! That game was not very good imo.

Sonic Heroes is alright

Tropical Freeze is a strong ass start. I time trialed that game. Super fun to speedrun and watch speedruns of.

Also rather ecstatic about Wario Land 4 being there.

I could do that with a few games, but then again I may piss off my family by staying up all day doing nothing but playing video games xD

Well then, now only to find a day to do this, esp since I have work on the only days I do not have to go to school... fml

I don't feel retro gaming is of higher quality than today's. Games we have around right now are better in almost each and every aspect, arguably, whether it be graphics, mechanics, features, you name it. Some older video games might surpass current in terms of story and whatnot, but that more or less varies from person-to-person, I believe; to me, one game could be great plot-wise, but to someone else, it might wind up to be terrible. Unfortunately, not everyone has the same, exact taste, haha. Though, when it comes to nostalgia, retro ones are usually at top (and would likely feel the same for current-generation of games when they are considered old). At least for me.

I think not. When you compare certain games, older games can brutalize the hell out of newer ones. For example I would rather play Metal Slug one thousand times rather than play Destiny for ten minutes. Or you can ask nearly anyone who has played any of the first six final fantasy games (people who have played the seventh tend to praise it more than they should) if the new FF games are worth the trouble of playing. Or Ride to Hell. . . Colonial Marines. . . Rome Total War. . . there are several new games that are on the 'don't ever play' list. Why? I chalk it up to laziness.

In this day and age, when you screw up you can just patch the game forever cough *destiny* cough. Whereas if you screwed up on an NES game, you're totally ****ed. There is no patching, no updates, just your glaring mistake of failure. I think it put more pressure on the developers and designers to make the best games they could possibly make and not slack just because they knew they could fix it later. That's why so many people are buying the old NES games off of the Nintendo store, like Mega Man, Metroid, and The Legend of Zelda.

Imagine if there was a game breaking bug in Super Mario Bros. where the flag wouldn't drop. Or glitching through walls in Metroid. Maybe clipping through the floor and dying would have made Contra the worst game of all time? No. These games are near as perfect as they could be and they don't have the same issues as larger, newer games do. I'd rather play with a password system (Mega Man) rather than a crap save system that doesn't work half the time, and leaves you stuck with little health, no ammo and a constant regenerating boss even though you beat the area and played for another 30 minutes and even clicked save: Deadspace 3.

Also, if you have a Playstation 3 I highly recommend looking for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night which is due to have a price drop to about $3 next week (Halloween specials). It's an amazing game, and you can tell it's been fashioned with painstaking care and love. It was so amazing I even bought a $20 PSP game just so I could play it (Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles).

Too long, didn't read: All games must find their niche. There are good and bad games in each generation, but do not dismiss the retro games as pure nostalgia, people love these games for a reason. We weren't forced to sit and play Pokemon Blue under penalty of death.

According to the site, you can split your 24 hours up. I don't know the full details yet, still kinda figuring it out myself. I actually had another idea that instead of playing the Pre Sequel, I might play Maximum Doom, which is probably an aweful terrible idea that I will hate myself for later, but I would actually be able to record it, lol. (Maximum Doom is a shovelware release BY ID for Doom and Doom II. Most of it is garbage from the early days of Doom mapping)

You ought to wait and buy the new ORAS 2DS. They are really neat looking and unique - especially if you're into the Hoenn gen of things.

Ahh but the 2DS is just an awful system why keep supporting it?

If I'm doing it, I won't split hours up unless I'm taking a break to get a drink/snack. Prolly streaming it too... Is there a set date from when you can do this? I can basically start today :P

Well they're running their official ones today I think, but different people have different lives and such, so I'm pretty sure there's a wide range of when it can be done. It might be hard for me to find people to pledge though, some part of me doubts my dad would pay me to play video games when he thinks I'm addicted, haha!

Neither would mine, they probably wil put me in a mental hospital when I ever tell them of this idea, they don't even support me in my effort to get somewhere in the pro-gaming scene :(

Man. That's awful. I'm sorry. :c

Times like this make me glad my father also plays a lot of games, and my mom used to. At least they sort of understand. ..Sort of. D:
