[Challenge] The Monotype Challenge v8, Tera Edition

Pokémon Black
Standard Mode - Fighting type

Gym Maniac Neon

Update 3 (2 gyms)

Here I did a quick work with Burgh having the type advantage in castelia and went full exp on Arnold the Pignite, so at least 1 of my Pokemon could survive Elesa's emolgas, and it worked, being level 35 when I got to the her, Against the first emolga, I setup flame charge 4 times, thanks to not OHKOing the emolga and Elesa's heals, then I outsped the second emolga, and 1 heat crash did the job, unfortunately static entered the scene here, but fortunately no Full para's against Zebstrika, and 4 hits of arm thrust did the job (in 2 turns).

The Ultimate Monotype Challenge! (Fighting)

Yellow, HeartGold, Sigma Σmerald, Platinum, White 2, X, Ultra Sun, Sword, Violet.

Additional Rules: - No items on important battles (rival, leaders, etc.)
- Set mode for important battles.

3. Major team overhaul, more Hawlucha carry and Confusion panic!

I kept going, and Totem Alolan Marowak was my next challenge. When it called for help a Salazzle, the combination of both was too strong for my team, and I... didn't lose, because I had Hawlucha, who beat both opponents using Rock Tomb and then Wing Attack after Rock Tomb got Disabled.

After this fight, Route 8 was accessible, and there I caught a Stufful, which I immediately added to my team, replacing Machop. Adamant nature is amazing for her as well. And here I also found a Water Stone, so as soon as Poliwag evolves into Poliwhirl, I'll evolve it into Poliwrath! Totem Lurantis was very similar to the Marowak fight. I did some damage, but ally Comfey healed him, and Solar Blade in Sunny condition was too strong for my team, except for..., you guessed it, Hawlucha! In the end Mankey delevered the final blow as I did not want to make Hawlucha overleveled... By the way, before all this, an Ace Trainer in Route 8 had a Fearow that destroyed my whole team, and again, only Hawlucha remained and thanks to Rock Tomb beat it. This is starting to get silly now!

And with this trial complete, I caught Passimian, and she was Adamant, so amazing nature again!, also some of my Pokémon evolved, so now I have Hariyama and Poliwrath. I decided to remove Mankey from the team to add Passimian, but Mankey may come back later, we'll see...

Next important fight before the Kahuna was Plumeria, and her Golbat was a pain, as I hit myself with confusion 5/6 turns, and the turn I didn't hit myself, Rock Tomb missed! Even Hawlucha went down, as Wing Attack did a lot of damage to my team, and I lost 4 Pokémon. Finally Passimian with Rock Tomb beat the bat and then the Salandit was easy with Bulldoze.

And finally, Kahuna Olivia was easy, as I have a typing advantage over her Pokémon. Stufful dealt with Anorith with Rock Tomb and almost beat Lileep as well. Crabrawler finished the fossil plant off and also beat the Lycanroc with the combination of Power-Up Punch and Brick Break, as her Bites did very little damage. Nice to beat an important fight without relying on Hawlucha for once!

And that's it! 2/4 islands done, but a lot more to do still! Time to go to Hano Grand Resort.

Update 4

I went back to route 4 after defeating team plasma in the cold storage, and caught myself a female Scraggy, named Sandra, then went on to the gym challenge, and got myself the 5th badge.

My current team:

4. If a Masquerain sweeps my team...

I kept going, and soon after the previous update, Stufful evolved into Bewear! So the team is now fully evolved except for Crabrawler. Nihilego at Aether Foundation was quite easy, 2 Bulldoze from Passimian and done, despite the Defense boost.

But now we get to Ula'ula Island, and things begin to get tricky for my team, as I am beginning to see game is quite hostile to Fighting-types! Hau was very hard in Malie City. Dartrix was already tough, as it beat my Crabrawler and with a crit almost beat Passimian as well. But the problem was the Alolan Raichu, so fast, and with Psychic. Thankfully, Hariyama survived with 10 HP, and using Fake Out + Knock Off, beat it. Bewear and Poliwrath easily dealt with the rest of his team (Noibat, Tauros and Vaporeon).

It was time to make some changes, and I removed Hariyama from the team to add a Pangoro I caught when I wild Pancham called it for help. It should help againt Psychic-types, I hope, as long as they don't have Fairy-type moves, something that I know well after Pokémon X... But while Psychic is now better covered, Flying is not...

Well, next important fight was Totem Togedemaru (I thought it was going to be a Vikavolt, but I misremembered, I guess Vikavolt was in Sun/Moon). It was easy, it was my luckiest fight so far, as he missed with Bounce 4 times, so Bewear meanwhile dealt with Skarmory and Dedenne, and finally Pangoro easily finished the fight.

And the last important fight I did was Guzma. Hawlucha almost beat the Golisopod, as he missed Razor Shell, but 2 Wing Attacks triggered its ability, and then Masquerain came. It was faster than my whole team, and with Air Slash, it destroyed everyone in one hit, except for Poliwrath, who survived with 3 HP but flinched, of course... So second loss. Next try, I gave a Sitrus Berry to Hawlucha. The idea was to trigger Unburden versus the Golisopod, and then be faster than Masquerain. But it didn't work, as Golisopod (again) missed Razor Shell, and then Masquerain swept my team again, with Poliwrath flinching (again). But then in the third try the strategy worked, Razor Shell triggered Unburden, and Hawlucha even beat the Golisopod with a critical hit. Now Hawlucha was faster than Masquerain, so with Rock Tomb it almost beat it, and made it slower also, making Passimian's own Rock Tomb finish the fight.

If a Masquerain, a terrible Pokémon, can sweep my team, I am going to struggle with this challenge. But it is what it is! Team is slow and Special attacks do a lot. Maybe I should have kept Mankey, as Primeape at least is fast...

5. Getting used to losing!

In the last update, I fought Guzma and beat him after getting destroyed by Masquerain twice, and things didn't get better, as I lost twice to Totem Mimikyu too. But before that, a big advantage of US/UM over S/M is that you can enter Mount Lanakila earlier, so you can evolve Crabrawler! So now, finally, my team is fully evolved.

As for the Totem Mimikyu fight, he didn't miss a single Play Rough, and even critted Bewear in one of the tries. The strategy was using Beat Up with Passimian to break the disguise and do some damage, but it was not enough, Play Rough was too much. In the end the key was Crabominable surviving in one of the attempts with 2 HP, and getting an Ice Punch hit. Bewear with Iron Head finished the fight!

Plumeria at Route 15 was easy, as Crabominable easily beat Golbat, and Passimian with Bulldoze beat the Salazzle. But next important fight was Guzma again, and that means trouble. I went for the same strategy as before, Sitrus Berry to Hawlucha, but forgot to put my bird first, so I could not trigger Unburden and Masquerain swept my team with Air Slash. And yeah, my useless Poliwrath flinched again, ridiculous, 3 times the same fight. Sixth loss. But next try the strategy worked, and with Acrobatics, Hawlucha easily swept Guzma's team.

To finish at Ula'ula, you have 2 more important fights, but these were easy as both Gladion and Nanu have many Pokémon weak to Fighting. Gladion's Golbat with Acrobatics was annoying but Bewear could endure the hits easily thanks to her ability. And Pangoro easily dealt with Nanu's Sableye and Krokorok, while Crabominable beat the Alolan Persian after my Pangoro went down.

Another island done, next we will go to Aether Paradise to help Lillie!

6. Aether Paradise cleared! The Guzma nightmare continues!

Let's rescue Cosmog! Aether Paradise trainers, including Faba, were not that hard. His Hypno was annoying with Nightmare in the first try and then with Focus Blast in the second, but Pangoro easily dealt with his team.

But now, it is Guzma again, so it's pain again. I lost once again to the Masquerain. I went for the Unburden strategy, but this time after Golisopod he sent his new addition to his team, Vikavolt, and beat Hawlucha with it. And yeah, for the 4th time in a row, Poliwrath flinched to his Air Slash, so I cannot even try Hypnosis.

I tried again, giving a Quick Claw to Crabominable this time, and, yeah, this speaks for itself, I had my camera ready, as I knew it was coming:

[PokeCommunity.com] The Monotype Challenge v8, Tera Edition

Quick Claw didn't work either, so it was another loss. 5 times I have sent Poliwrath vs. Masquerain, 5 times he made me flinch, factoring Air Slash 95 % accuracy, that is a 0.188 % of happening... I cannot even try the Hypnosis! But next try, Quick Claw worked for Crabominable, so finally the bug went down!

[PokeCommunity.com] The Monotype Challenge v8, Tera Edition

To "compensate", his Vikavolt got 2 crits in a row, but fell to Bewear's Thrash, and then Poliwrath beat Pinsir and Pangoro finished the fight against a very weakened Golisopod.

After this you fight Dulse, but a lv. 47 Poipole is not too hard, and while poison was annoying, it was a relatively quick fight. And to end Aether Paradise, you have to fight Lusamine. She starts with Clefable, who is a big trouble for my team. Thankfully, she had bad AI, and went for Psychic and Hyper Voice instead of Moonblast, so even if Pangoro went down, Clefable was weakened enough for Passimian to finish it off. After this the fight was not hard. Hawlucha missed High Jump Kick after defeating her Lilligant and that made Lopunny beat him, but otherwise with my Bewear and Passimian everything (Bewear, Lopunny and Milotic) went down.

So now, I am at Poni island, ready (or not, after 8 losses and a Totem Ribombee on the horizon xD) for the final island!

Pokemon Shield Ground Monotype Run: Finale
Spoiler:

Final Team
Spoiler:

Run MVP: I mean it's Excadrill, it's obviously Excadrill one of the most broken pokemon in competitive history when paired with sand, great defensive typing, powerful moves, swords dance. Steel typing was very helpful for a ton of mandatory battles in this game.

LVP: The Galar Ground types
Two games in a row where the new region ground types aren't as good in their home game. though Runerigus was alright Stunfisk was pretty bad and Sandaconda was underwhelming. I tried using them and dropped them pretty quick for established heavy hitters like Golurk and Hippowdon

Honorable Mention: Mudsdale
Incredibly physically bulky, powerful moves, strong earlygame with iron defense and high horsepower, took some gnarly hits in the lategame. A far cry from the meek little colt that got shredded every time a special attack looked at him funny in USUM

Salutations! Thanks so much for keeping this thread up for years now. glad it's still active because I wanted to redo my bug monotype attempt from 2023. I am surprised I am still on the challenger list! My Intention is to for now do a single bug type run, but I want to eventually do an ultimate bug type run. It looks like though that i'd have to do FireRed all over again though if I wanted to go from a single to an ultimate run, so I will register now as an ultimate run and do FireRed now; do the other games later.

FireRed Log #1
Caught Caterpie & Weedle at Viridian Forest. Brock's Onix was rough, so I had to get Butterfree to Lvl 15 to use Sleep Powder/Confusion combo to down Geodude and Onix. Beedrill is a phys. attacker and is useless here. Cut through to Mt. Moon where I caught Paras, and found the Bullet Seed TM there cause i'd need a grass move for Misty. Taught Bullet Seed to Paras. Against her It took a few tries. Staryu was easy; Stun Spore + Bullet Seed. Starmie was pretty tricky though. It always attacked first and the water pulse/swift packed a punch. I'd use Butterfree's sleep powder and would chip it down as much as possible with Bullet Seed. When Starmie would wake back up and down my Pokemon, i'd have to clean up with Beedrill's Fury Attack. It was a team effort for sure. Ran down to Vermilion City and cleared S.S. Anne's. Got HM01 and now it's Lt. Surge Time. Since I know Ground is great against Electric, I taught Parasect Dig (Dig is given in Cerulean City after beating the team rocket guy.) So with Dig and some paralyze heals I went in. Parasect's dig was able to one shot the entire gym. Yawn. I went ahead to the rock tunnel and rushed through it. Arrived in Lavender Town and used Butterfree's Confusion to shred through the gauntlet of Gastlys in the Pokemon Tower. Forgot I needed the Silph Scope to get to the final floor the tower so I went back down and began a little bit of Route 12.

So far Butterfree has been a real MVP, with very early access to sleep powder and good special attack. Parasect has been flexible cause he has the best move coverage so far. Beedrill, like the last run, has been mostly useless. His typing hasnt been helpful. He's mostly just been help cleaning up and helping take the blows for the other two. I still plan to level him up and give him best possible move set, cause a kanto bug type run doesn't have the most wiggle room.

Do let me know if you need proof for anything. Thanks

I might include Shedinja in the mix w/ wonder guard.
This is not something I'd recommend taking to the League in ORAS unless you really want a counter to Steven's Mega Metagross.

There are only four Pokemon in the League that can't 1HKO Shedinja: Drake's Kingdra, Steven's Metagross and Claydol, and Glacia's Walrein, and that last one doesn't work either if she managed to set Hail with any of her other four Pokemon.

That being, said, Shedinja is an excellent option against Wallace. The only things he can do against it are using Luvdisc's Lovely Kiss to confuse it, which is negatable by a Persim or Lum Berry, or Seaking's Horn Drill if Shedinja is level 44 or lower.
