[Released] Pokemon This Gym of Mine / Rank Up Edition

I've recently finished the main plot up to the end credits. Overall I enjoyed my time with the game, but I still have some significant misgivings.

1. The opening hours were incredibly slow. Part of that likely comes from my having picked dragons, but any type chosen requires wandering through large areas with high encounter rates in the hopes that the right Pokemon show up nearby while avoiding trainers whose levels could be ten to twenty levels higher than mine.

2. The aforementioned forced story events caught me off guard. I understand keeping players on their toes should maintain their interest, but I feel like the game was punishing me for not preparing for situations it didn't warn me about.

3. My biggest grievance is the starters' being locked away if I don't pick them. Although the official games also do this, they only lock out two lines, not fifty plus. I like catching them all and completing the Pokedex in both official and fan games, so this game not letting me do that because the game says so just feels wrong.

With that moaning out of the way, I did like gradually building up the city, the optional easy-grinding, and the plotline not trying to be pitch-black, but I don't think I'll be sticking around for the remake. Regardless, thanks for the good time.

TBF in this game the we aren't playing as a 'catch them all' trainer but a Gym Leader, representing a type specialty

TBF in this game the we aren't playing as a 'catch them all' trainer but a Gym Leader, representing a type specialty
That's perfectly valid, but the game doesn't really hold to that point for two reasons:

1. You're free to catch and battle with any Pokemon you find for outside events; only gym battles must adhere to a specialty. So you can catch most of them, just not all of them.

2. The starter restrictions lock out Pokemon that do match the specialty. For my dragon playthrough, I'd have liked to use Kingdra or Noivern, but I couldn't because those are starters for other types despite being part dragon. The gym rules also allow up to two off-type Pokemon, provided they can use the gym's signature move. Mine was Dragon Claw, so I'd have been able to use Eelektross or Chesnaught on my gym team.

In any case, I agree with you that gym leading doesn't really lend itself well to getting all the things. Pokedex completion is just a challenge I value undertaking, and this game's lack of that particular task didn't stop me from playing it.

Can you please let us change controls? I hate the default key binds because it swaps Z and C. Also you can't change them with F1. I'd also like auto run on be default.

Could you also change the starters so they're all a 3-stage/branching evolutionary line? I'd change them to:
Normal: Whismur, Lillipup and Pidove
Fighting: Machop, Timburr and Jangmo-o
Flying: Zubat, Starly and Fletchling
Poison: Bellsprout, Budew and Venipede
Ground: Rhyhorn, Swinub and Sandile
Rock: Geodude, Larvitar, Roggenrola
Bug: Sewaddle, Grubbin and Blipbug
Ghost: Gastly, Duskull and Litwick
Steel: Aron, Klink and Honedge
Fire: Magby, Fletchling and Rolycoly
Water: Poliwag, Horsea and Lotad
Grass: Oddish, Seedot and Bounsweet
Electric: Magnemite, Elekid and Shinx
Psychic: Abra, Gothita and Solosis
Ice: Spheal, Vanillite and Snorunt/Mime Jr. -> Galarian Mr. Mime
Dragon: Dratini, Trapinch and Axew
Dark: Galarian Zigzagoon, Deino and Impidimp
Fairy: Togepi, Ralts and Flabébé

What is wrong with the starters that they already have?

Hey. I tried both games and overall I got a kick out of it. The ranked-up version is especially promising.

To start with what I like (with the ranked up version):
- Income is generally more affordable so you have a chance to see the results of putting down buildings more readily than in the previous version.
- Generally more stuff to do that makes the game less monotonous.
- Finally some controller support
- The entire premise is quite well-executed and fun as a low-scope Pokemon fangame.

The areas that need improvement:
- The route design for both games kind of suck in the sense that there is a lack spots for the player to breath. Craggy pass is particularly awful in this regard. It's enough that the encounter rate is high, but to both enter and exit the area has to involve going through encounter hell with no other elements like the jumpable ledges to make traversing these areas dynamic and allow for the player to have a easier chance to travel back to town. Especially when you have side-quests and you actually want to ignore some of the encounters (which I'll add that you are generally more incentivized to do here given the nature of building a monotype team in this game), it makes traversing these areas feel like a frustrating slog.
- This game kind of made me understand why Gamefreak is generally sparse with allowing trainers to heal their mons with potions. In practice, it kind of slows the game down or delays the inevitable more than it make the game feel challenging in a fun way. If you want AI item usage to be prominent without this annoying potion spam, though, an alternative I suggest is to make use of stat boosting items or berries. Better yet, maybe you can make your own battle items that do crazy stuff like change the pokemon's type or something spicy? That would be way more interesting to play around than the free priority heals these AI trainers love to spam.
- Having to manually set your party to the right amount during a gym day feels clunky and one of the worst aspects is that it's too easy to get thrown into unwinnable situations because you didn't release that you need to withdraw the rest of your party to have a chance during a story event. I feel like, in general, the gym gameplay loop should be set up similar to the battle frontier where you just choose which three members of your party participate in the series of battles, rather than the game forcing you to constantly use the PC.

Overall, very fun but could definitely use some work. You have a great opportunity to make a better game with the rank-up version, so I wouldn't even take the approach of just copying the same elements of the previous game.

You are an up-and-coming Gym Leader assigned to Umbal City after the previous Leader left one day.
The town has been left in disrepair. Building lots are vacant, waiting for new structures. The townsfolk aren't exactly excited to see
a new Gym Leader. To make matters worse, a gang has shown up and started assailing the town!

Build your reputation, gather Gym Trainers, rebuild the town, and fight back against the gang to stake
your claim and bring Umbal City back from the brink!

Choose a type for your Gym to specialize in! Be careful, you can only use Pokemon of
that type in your gym! You can have a minimum of 2 Pokemon that don't have that type,
but they have to learn your Gym's signature move to be viable!

Master your Gym's type and take down anyone that stands in your way!

Bring in a Gym Guide and Gym Trainers to help run the Gym

Check your mailbox for applicants looking to train at your Gym!
These Trainers will help build your reputation, which will help you progress and win over the town!

And much more!

quick question is the "Rank Up" Version still in progress or has it been dropped? no new news in a long time

Looks fun but the control scheme is bad, no controller support and it's telling me to do something with the fonts but there's no explanation to what the "control panel" is. Oh well, onto the next one I guess...

will you change the battle sprite in the newer ranked up version so it looks like the mc not red or leaf

GG can't play the game because of an intentional game design. I want to play as a Fairy Gym, but 90% of good Fairy Pokémons have Fairy as their secondarytype. Which we know this wonderful game won't accept for some reason. Even your Starter Pokémon is literally a violation and can only be used as an exception. Again, why did you make it this way? Don't want to sound rude or anything but what the heck?

and what exactly do you mean by 'good' fairy types? I'm sure there is many fairy types people would consider good, but this feels like a case of where people complain a fan game makes the most broken/too popular pokemon available later and then say there is nothing good to use because they wont try to use any of what is available.

Hey, is anyone else having an issue where they have a save file already on the game, but when you start a new game, it never gets past the loading screen. I've waited 30mins and it still doesn't progress. I've also deleted and reinstalled the game but my save data was still on there and it still didn't work. Any advice?

Did you actually read what they said? Their complaint was that pokemon that have fairy as their second type aren't considered valid by the game for a fairy team. I'm not sure why you jumped to the conclusion you did because the only thing it has in common with what Opresiet said is that both posts mention the fairy typing.

I read what they said, missed the 'secondary type' part dunno if an edited post is shown as edited on these forums or not in case it was added after I read it, but I also was not aware of the issue with secondary typings. It was my bad that I missed that, either I got tunnel vision due to far too frequently seeing people whine they can't use the super popular pokemon wayyy early in fan games or the post was edited. However I would assume the post would have an indicator to say it was edited if it was the latter which would rule that out.

I can't make the window full screen (or resize it at all from the tiny opening size) and my Xbox controller isn't working like it usually does with other fan games like this, any advice?
