FireRed hack: Pokémon Odyssey [Beta 3.5.4]

Update time! Update time!

This month's update arrives a few days earlier than usual, BUT this doesn't mean it'll be a small one.
Let's start right away!

► ETRIAN VARIANTS - THIRD WAVE: PART 1

Here's a little sneak peek to the first half of the third wave

[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon Odyssey [Beta 3.5.4]

► WHO'S THAT POKÉMON?

You'll be able to see if a move is not effective (Red), not very effective (Yellow) or super effective (Green) in the bottom-right corner of the screen

► IMPROVED TITLESCREEN

► BETTER MAPS!

This will take a lot of time, but It's totally worth it.
I've decided to improve a lot of locations

SMALL UPDATE REGARDING SOME MAPS
  • Top left: First Stratum's new entrance
  • Top right/Bottom left: I've changed where the entrance of the 4th stratum is. Instead of being placed near the lava lake, it's now near the base camp.
  • Bottom right: This is were the old entrance was.

► IMPROVED OVERWORLD SPRITES!

Here's what I've been working on for the last month: a complete revamp of all the OW sprites in the game.
Sneak peek:

From the top-left corner:
Nyx, Aimée, Ethan, Olympia, Brody, Karin, Rockey, Kitt, Manu.
Combat Girl, Pokémaniac, Black Belt, Ranger, Pokémon Breeder, Birdkeeper, Bug Catcher.

► SOME CHANGES TO AETHER-TYPE MOVES

The identity issue [of Aether-type moves] is exasperated by the moves themselves with a majority of the moves being named Etheric bash, slash, boon, star etc etc. I think renaming some of these and having them all thematically close could help lessen the issue.
  • JakeTheSnake

And that's why I've decided to change their names:

Etheric Shot ➜ Light Shot
Etheric Gleam ➜ Astral Gleam
Etheric Star ➜ Radiant Start
Etheric Bash ➜ Mind Bash
Etheric Slash ➜ Cosmic Slash
Etheric Edge ➜ Energy Edge
Etheric Decoy ➜ Shogun Decoy
Etheric Flood ➜ Azure Flood

► FASTER BATTLES AND EVENTS!

If you lose a battle during a major event, the next time you'll be able to skip dialogues and jump straight into the battle.
This will save players' time, especially those who want to play this game on real hardware, where there's no built-in speed-up function.

AND

I've reduced the delay between messages during battle to speed-up the whole thing.

► TREASURE CHESTS?

This is how chests will work.
They won't vanish once you open them, thus helping you recognize where you've already been during your explorations.
Red chests are for items and money, yellow chests are for TMs.

Aaaand that's all for today, see you next month!
(I'm tired, boss...)

Hi! Love the game! I've went through all the documentation and for the life of me cannot find where the evolutions are. Is there a razor claw in game for Sneasel? razor fang for Gligar? Etc.?

Thanks! Sorry if it's in there and I'm just dumb… I don't see it

Check the "Pokémon Stats, Learnset etc" sheet, there are multiple pages at the bottom. Navigate through them, you'll find everything you need.

Hello~!

Heard about this hack on a Reddit post a while back, and was gonna wait until the full release, but I just had to start it. Haven't finished the First Stratum yet (I *just* started), but I have to say this is already a wonderful experience~! Refreshing, while still keeping the Pokémon spirit, and as a fan of Etrian Odyssey as well, my nerd gauges are flipping out at the little details~!

Thank you so much for making and working so hard on this~! I wish you the best of luck as you proceed, and great happiness in your life to match the joy of this project ^-^

"Refreshing, while still keeping the Pokémon spirit"
Thank you so much, that's what I wanted to achieve in the first place! I hope you'll enjoy the rest of your playthrough then, and feel free to join our Discord server!

Update time! Update time!

Here we go again. This update is pretty important, although smaller than the previous one.

► EIGHTH STRATUM'S MAP: FINISHED!

That's right, this means only the Seventh Stratum and the postgame section need to be done!
I'll be honest with you... This makes me a bit sad cause it means the adventure is almost over.
Anyway, we're finally here. If you know, you know.

► NEW GAME MODE!

As you may know, there are 2 game modes: Normal and Hard. However I noticed that several users had difficulties even in Normal Mode. They were complaining about the presence of mandatory level caps and the inability to use items in battle, and that's why I added a new mode made especially for those who want to appreciate the story and exploration, without having to face a challenge.

[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon Odyssey [Beta 3.5.4]

In Picnic Mode there are no level caps; this has been done to give players more freedom, thus making the game more accessible.
However, the limitation regarding healing items will remain.
Basically:
  • Picnic Mode: No healing items in battle;
  • Normal Mode: No healing items in battle, also level caps are active;
  • Hard Mode: No healing items in battle, level caps are active and bosses will have EVs, held items and custom movesets.

► NEW MAIN MENU SCREEN

What can I say other than "It's cool"?

► ETRIAN VARIANTS REVAMP

Some of them were old or meh, that's why they needed a revamp.
Here's an example:

I played both the 2.6 beta and 3.0 betas, I don't normally like playing double battles but the entire game being focused around double battles is a nice change.
The Etrian variants are really nice, I'm not sure if I can see the Made in Abyss inspiration though.

I think the run toggle should be changed from L to R, I usually set L=A in the settings and that interferes with playing one handed.

I love this romhack! Feels like playing Pokémon Colosseum. I want to give some tips for players struggling with higher difficulties:

Use Protect: The TM for Protect comes a little late imo (this would make a lot of mons better if it were available in the first stratum), after arguably the hardest two fights in the game. However, there are Pokémon that learn protect by level up, so those mons have increased value. Protect is so useful that almost every mon has a reason to use it in doubles.

Use Follow Me/Rage Powder: There are many mons in this romhack that have access to these moves. This enables strong offensive threats to set up and get off damage safely while their tanky partner absorbs aggro.

Speed Control: Any VGC player will tell you how important speed control is. Trick Room, Tail Wind, and Sticky Web are not available, so options are more limited. Paralysis is valuable, and weather abilities that double speed have a unique advantage that no other playstyle can grant. Naturally fast mons and priority moves are also more valuable.

Counter weather teams with opposing weather: Straightforward, but boosted hydro pumps coming off Swift Swim Pokémon are difficult to take. Send out Torkoal and wash your worries away.

Use Intimidate: Physical attacks become less problematic when the user has -1 attack. This is one of the most valuable abilities in doubles.

Use Jumpluff: What does this one Pokémon have that warrants a recommendation? Fast Spore. You can trivialize most fights by setting up a sweeper, KOing one mon, and putting the other to sleep. This creates a domino effect where neither opposing mon can act most of the time. It has Rage Powder and Synthesis too, so it can control aggro when it isn't spamming Spore. You have access to Jumpluff after completing the first stratum. I have yet to find something that adds as much value to my teams.

If I could change some things about this hack, first I would make the Nature Modifier available earlier. There's probably a way to cheese past the Kingdra, but up to that point, it feels bad having to throw away a mon because it has a -atk or -spd nature. Second, I would change the mechanics for when a Pokémon faints in doubles to what it is in gen 4 and later. New Pokémon are brought in at the end of the turn. This is better for so many reasons. Principally, it gives the new mon a chance to act. Third, I think Fairy type not existing takes more than it adds. Iirc, it is difficult to add more than one type to Romhacks, so this may not be feasible, but the pokemon who lose Fairy type generally suffer for it. Finally, like I said, I would make Protect available early. It opens up so many options.

And don't forget about shedinja who can beat most of FOE in the sea easily

Maybe a dumb question but do these most recent updates come included in the download now or are these just updates coming soon in 4.0?

I was just about to make a post regarding that lol.

Update time! Update time!

We're planning to release v3.5 in a week or two from now! Bear in mind this is a QoL update.

This new version will include:
  • Improved Titlescreen;
  • Improved New Game/Continue screen;
  • Improved maps and graphics;
  • Pokémon Compendium (Pokédex);
  • Almost the entire 3rd wave of Etrian Variants (68 regional forms in total), with some improved sprites (such as Whiscash, Mismagius, the Regi trio etc etc);
  • Reworked gathering/mining points; moreover, the sign next to them will tell you which items can be obtained;
  • F.O.E. boost;
  • Ev-Editor;
  • 2 new sidequests;
  • Type-effectiveness during battle (odyssey-news);
  • Less delay between in-battle text and move animations;
  • Chest system instead of overworld Pokéballs;
  • Picnic Mode (no level caps);
  • "Cutscene skip" function after you lose a battle during a story event;
  • New moves: Trailblaze, Flame Charge, Solar Blade, First Press, Volt Switch, U-Turn, Flip Turn, Phantom Force, Coil, Foul Play, Star Drop, Summer Tango, Spring Tango, Bright Song, Life Ballad, Rapid Fire, Toxic Reap, Wilting Miasma, Ladybug Rush, Volt Wings, Sealing Light, Crazed Shout, Whip Ripper, Phalanx Guard, Venom Gust, Subzero Gale, Double Hammer, Stomp Crush, Icy Aria, Frost Curse.
  • Last but now least, the Level Candy!
    Level Candy is a key item (unlimited use) you'll be able to obtain by interacting with the Nintendo Switch in Nyx's house from v3.5 onwards.
    How does it work? It's pretty simple, lemme explain:
    • If you use this candy RIGHT BEFORE a Captain battle, your party level will be set to the current Level Cap-1 (in case you wanted to evolve your Pokémon via level up). Let's say you're about to fight the first Captain (Level Cap = 18); your party will be set to Level 17;
    • If you use this candy BEFORE REACHING the Captain, your party level will be set to the previous Level Cap.
The game will notify you before proceeding with its use, so rest assured.
Battle House and Chansey's hyper training will still be relevant for mid-stratum grinding.
This has been done (together with the introduction of the Ev-Editor) to reduce the time needed to build new team members.
I hope you'll like it!

So I triggered the lottery-related event, but I didn't save before interacting with the Pokemon, and I also didn't have any Poke Balls at the time.

I assumed there would be some sort of dialogue/quest beforehand... But obviously there wasn't one. Can the event be triggered again, or am I going to have to start the game over? I haven't even found the Professor's assistant yet, so I won't have to redo THAT much, but it would still be annoying...

If you want that Pokémon, you'll have to start over :/

Anyway, I've released v3.5.2 to fix some bugs:
- Fixed a weird glitch regarding Nyx's overworld
- Fixed some crash issues with chests on myBoy.
