ash really needs his charizard to get back in the action or else he will just have to deal with losing in the top 8 again
When Ash beat Gary back in Johto, that proves that fully evovled pokemon make a huge difference in battle. That is the purpose of reserves, because obviously Ash is too stubborn to fully evolve his pokemon. Ash losing to Shinji is a good lesson that sometimes you need sheer power. there is only so much non evolved pokemon can take you before you get beaten. If that was the case then he should be evolving Monferno and Grotle to Torterra and Infernape. If Ash can't even beat shinji how do you expect him to take on the Elite 4 and Cynthia? Honestly it gets kinda old him always pulling through some kind of miracle with pre-evolved pokemon. I know that Ash will get destroyed if he tried to battle Cynthia, the fact that even Shinji couldn't beat Cynthia while Shinji had fully evovled pokemon proves that Ash will need to evovle every sinnoh pokemon he has to even have a small chance to beat Cynthia. Seriously having pokemon like Buziel, Staravia and other pokemon will not cut it when he faces the Champion. If he goes to get his reserves on the mere basic of losing to Shinji, isn't that exactly the same as merely giving in? What example would that set? (It certainly wouldn't be a good impression on him as a trainer, either.) Wow, make a pledge to defeat the Pokémon League while on a "new streak" meeting and training a team full of new Pokémon? And then just giving up on them and switching to reserves? Wouldn't that be… stupid?
If i recall, it also took Ash multiple tries to beat Brandon. Let us not forget that trainers like Cynthia are much more powerful especially with pokemon like Garchomp ready to fight. I seriously don't think pre evolved pokemon will do Ash any good later on especially when taking on the likes of Volkner, Cynthia, Lucian and the rest of the Elite 4 TTo be honest, Ash did beat Brandon with Three pre-evolution Pokémon. Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Pikachu of course. Charizard his only fully evolved Pokémon lost, but I'd say 99% because of Ash's stupidity of doing a Seismic Toss on Dusclops. While Paul lost to Brandon with fully evolved Pokémon.
