I think Game Freak really needs to either:

    1) Change Hidden Power to use the higher of Attack or Special Attack

    2) Make a new move, based on Attack, that otherwise works just like Hidden Power

It would help all of the physically strong Pokemon, that never use Hidden Power, be able to have an answer to their walls.

If they did that though, that would effectively mean the end of walls, which I think are a staple of the game. Basically every Pokemon would have a move that's super effective against the type they're weak against. As much as I would love to have an answer to Forretress and Ferrothorn's weaknesses, I love using Heatran as a special wall too much to make that sacrifice D:

Well Empoleon is weak against Fighting, Ground, and Electric, it could last long against them. Say it is facing a Ground type opponent, it can counter by using a Water type move. That is how to turn the disadvantage into an advantage. As for facing an Electric type, counter by using a Ground type move. As for a Fighting type opponent, counter by using a Flying type move

What I am trying to say is, Hidden Power is useless to a Pokemon that has a terrible Special Attack stat (invested or not). Physical attackers, therefore, have less strategic use/value than special attackers. Couldn't tell you how many Youtube vidoes I have watched where they postulate whether an opponent's Pokemon has a certain Hidden Power or not.

*shrug* Just want my buddy Steelix (and Sandshrew) to have more options :)

Well Steelix does have a lot of counters to its type weaknesses. It has Earthquake which is good against Fire types, Thunder Fang is good against Water types, all of its Steel type moves (Gyro Ball especially), and Ice Fang covers Ground types. It doesn't have anything for Fighting types, but most Fighting type moves are physical so Steelix can tank most of those with its Defense.

Reason for joining: I fell in love with Steel-types when the second generation games came out. I had to see and try them out for myself. Ever since then, I have had a soft spot for Steel-types.
Answer one of the current topics: Favorite Steel-type would be Steelix, because of his size, power and imposing look. He makes a wickedly strong fighter. I try to give him moves that compliment him, like Crunch because of his massive jaws, Iron Tail because of his long, tough body and tail, and moves like Dig and Sandstorm to throw off my opponents and make it hard for them.

By the way, here is my Steel monotype teams:

    CloysterOyster has been added. Welcome!

I felt the same way about steel types when they were first introduced. It was really exciting to see that new types were introduced, and Steel was instantly my favorite. Great teams, by the way. I'm glad to see I'm not the only fan of Klinklang. Quite underrated in my opinion :)

    Hey everyone, new topic!

Who is your favorite Steel Type specialist? This would include: Jasmine, Steven, Byron, and Wikstrom. Which is your favorite? Discuss!

Though not my favorite Wikstorm's intro animation on X/Y was AMAZING! With the pokemon league music playing and the animation going it was one of the greatest pokemon moments I have had ever.

My favorite though would probably be Jasmine, in SS/HG I was awed by Steelix and really wanted one. After you got to rebattle her she had some of my favorite steel types-Metagross, Magnezone, Skarmory and Steelix.

Personally, Jasmine is my favorite. She's my all time favorite gym leader. She's such a shy, softspoken girl, and yet she trains the biggest, toughest, most fierce Pokemon (Steelix, Metagross, Empoleon, to name a few). And I like how much she cares about Pokemon, as evidenced by her taking a break from gym battles to take care of Ampharos.

When it comes favorite Steel type specialist, my would have to be Byron. One reason he is my favorite is because he is a large ham in the anime. Course he is also a great gym leader. Too bad when he speaks in the games, there is no random explosions behind him.

I still haven't seen Byron in-game. The Sinnoh games are still the only set of Pokemon games I haven't yet played D: I remember him from the PWT in White 2, and from what I remember he's like a miner right? And yea, the anime always totally butchers the characters' personalities from the game. I was really disappointed with how they did Jasmine.

Do you mean when you first walk into his chamber and these two giant swords come crashing down next to you? If so, I totally agree, coolest moment in Pokemon ever ^^

Yes!!! That was one of the coolest moments I have EVER had in a Pokemon game. The visual and audible combination was just amazing. The only other moment that could top that was in HG/SS when Lugia/Ho-oh animation was playing. That was the first 3dish clip in any pokemon game and that was pretty cool too ^^

Yes! I thought it was really cool as well! Really adds to the dramatic effect. Out of all the chambers I thought his was the best one (though it's tied with Seibold). I'll admit, his Aegislash gave me quite a bit of trouble at first, mainly because I didn't bring anything that could counter it.

Theoretically it should have been easy for me, since my starter was Fennekin, but I dumped my Delphox in the box fairly early on, so by the time I got to the Elite Four it was only level 40. I eventually ended up having to catch a Hydreigon and it pretty much got me through the whole Elite Four :P

That Aegislash can be hard if you don't have a decent counter to it, thankfully I had Charizard so it wasn't much of a problem to me at all. Plus my Greninja and Meowstic knew moves strong against its Ghost typing.

Aegislash is definitely one of the hardest Pokemon to counter. The mind games you play with it are crazy. You have to figure out "Is it going to use King's Shield and make me lose two attack stages? Or is it going stay in defense mode and use swords dance? Or is it going to switch from defense mode to attack mode and do serious damage?" It's so much fun to use :D

Thankfully King's Shield won't lower your Attack stat if you're using non-contact moves. There's so much that sword can do, and now I recently decided to one as a permanent team member, not only because of its amazing ability but the fact I needed another Fairy killer on the team to complement my Roserade.

Yes! It's a must on my competitive teams. Actually, I've found that Fairy types are fairly easy to counter in general. They're practically unbeatable if you don't have a counter prepared for them, but just put an Aegislash or a Roserade on your team and you're pretty much Fairy proof.

IDK about unbeatable. Azumarill can still be dealt with by Grass or Electric attacks. Klefki or Mawile can be dealt with by Fire attacks. Granbull, and other pure Fairy-types, don't have massive HP pools, so can be dealt with in a few attacks. Florges is basically a Fairy version of Alakazam; albeit with better stats, but still has a low Defense.

I am currently brewing up a Smeargle to troll people with. It has King's Shield and Extremespeed, but I'm still not sure what I am going to do with the last two moves. Maybe Belly Drum and some kind of tail attack. I was thinking of giving it moves to be exactly like Aegislash, but not sure how effective it would be (if at all). Maybe Iron Tail? Steel-type seems to be a good coverage move lately.

Something more Club-related: I have a shiny Steelix now! Caught an Onix in the safari and trade-evolved it into Steelix. Has Sturdy and a Lonely nature, so I'll likely train it to be a UU/casual sweeper.
