[Released] Pokémon Academy Life: Forever!

Update 2.11.2023 is--say it with me, everyone--finally out!

Here's a list of some new features you can expect to see in this release. Not all of them are available immediately at the start of Week 6.
  • The game has been written out to the end of Week 6, on May 16th.
  • Sabrina, Nessa, Sonia, Rosa, and two secret characters have new character scenes.
  • 30 new Foreverals have been created, unlocked by viewing the character scenes listed above.
  • A new system has been introduced that allows you to gather items.
  • Enabled going out at night.
  • New collectibles have been introduced: Gimmighoul Coins, Gym Badges, and Scholarships.
  • Several balance changes to Gardenia's investing, certain custom moves, and gifting items.
  • Updated assets for a great many students, other characters, and teachers.
  • A new bondable character, the SECRET character from the Price of Fame storyline, has been introduced.
  • Many, many, bugfixes.
  • When you go to bed, the game will auto-detect if the save file has the potential for problems, and will prompt you to correct them. (Bugfix impact is now almost entirely noninvasive.)
  • Removed Ethan.

Please report bugs and typos in the discord, and join in the largest and most active community of PAL:F fans! (Seriously, I really want to talk with you guys, but I only really have time to monitor one social stream at a time. All the voting takes place in the discord now, too!)

Many thanks to the dozens of excellent bugtesters.

Thank you very much for your patience. I love you very much.

Need to update the link, keep going <3

Just finished playing the game, using the download link from the Discord which is updated more regularly.

Easily one of my favourite Pokemon games, it really does feel like a mix of Persona and Pokemon in a lot of ways, with time management being the central skill, and it flowing into Pokemon Battling as well.

The game is making good progress and I'm optimistic for the future, even if it will likely several more years for it to be 100% completed, in the meantime I may try replaying it again and trying different choices and specialties.

Howdy, folks! Voting for Week 7 is now open. As before, our new polls are using a more secure discord-based format--and this is the format that will be used for all future polls, too. I know it's less convenient than google docs, but it's quite necessary to maintain election integrity, so that's what we're going with. But I said all this last time, and the time before that. Now, without further ado:

In order to participate in the voting for Week 7, please follow these steps!
- Join the discord, link here.
- Read the rules.
- Read the most recent post in the #announcements channel, which explains how to vote.

Happy voting!

Just played the latest version, really great stuff. Enjoying how the game is shaping up, keep up the good work!

Hey there's a consistent bug where the game crashes when you try to Trick the Altarianite off from Dawn.

Update 5.11.2024 is out!

Finally, I can show you all, truly and undoubtedly, that there is nothing in Week 7. You all laughed! You laughed at me! But now you'll see! You'll all see! (And, on an unrelated note, I've developed a great interest in optometry recently.)

Here's a list of some new features you can expect to see in this release. Not all of them are available immediately at the start of Week 7.

  • The game has been written out to the end of Week 7, on May 23rd.
  • Ethan, Hilbert, Hilda, Bianca, Bea, and Nate have new character scenes. Nate, in fact, has two.
  • 21 new Foreverals have been created, unlocked by viewing the character scenes listed above.
  • Twenty new scenes have been created for each elective class, providing more development and worldbuilding. Class should "pass without incident" much less frequently.
  • Twenty new scenes have been created for that dialog that Ethan shares with you before class begins, to add more variety.
  • A mechanic has been introduced that makes it easier to hunt certain types of Pokémon.
  • A mechanic has been introduced that makes it easier to swap out Pokémon in the PC.
  • Various balance changes and asset updates.
  • Removed Ethan.

Many thanks to the dozens of excellent bugtesters.

I'd also like to include a shout-out to three community members who went above and beyond in the line of duty this week.

Iustinus Tempus helped me halve the size of the entire game, standardizing image and audio files types. This makes the game much faster to build, download, and extract, benefitting both development efforts and player use. Give him thanks when you see him around!

Eyen was an absolutely instrumental part of the bugtesting effort. Bugtesting took a good bit longer than it normally does, so I created, like, nine different releases, and Eyen stalwartly dove into all of them, reporting a massive number of typos, making the game better for everyone else. Give him thanks when you see him around!

MMCC is the reason there's 360 new scenes in the game. This absolute Mensch wrote all three hundred and sixty scenes, scenes that are full of character, love for Pokémon, and helpful information, to boot. I said once that allowing someone else to approach the writing desk was a point I was immovable on. I have never been happier to takesies-backsies. Give him thanks when you see him around!

Thank you very much for your patience. I love you very much.

Update 8.1.2024 is out!

The bugfixers have been absolutely amazing. Please give them a massive round of applause for a very well-done job.

Here are the patch notes, so you can theorize, glaze, or rage, as you wish.

Be mindful there are small spoilers up to the end of Week 7 in this.
  • The game has been written out to the end of Week 8, on May 30th.
  • Dawn, Rosa, Janine, Misty, Erika, Silver, a Secret Character, and Cheren have character scenes.
  • 24 Foreverals have been created, unlocked by viewing the character scenes listed above.
  • Many new 'generic class scenes' have been created--every class has at least thirty, with many having forty. MMCC continues to cook.
  • A new mechanic has been introduced that will become rather important over the next two in-game weeks.
Please report bugs and typos in the discord!

This week also comes with a variety of retcons--changes or states of being that existed previously that I have thought on, and wish to remove. As these may not be immediately apparent, I will list them here, as there's much potential for confusion when it comes to retcons.

Mechanical Retcons

  • Rosa and Hilda no longer swap classes. This means Rosa does not give up her Pikachu.
  • Nate will now swap classes from Electric to Dark, shortly after Week 7 Tuesday. If he acquired Toxel on Springsday, he will give it to Rosa.
  • Wally has been made a Fairy/Fighting trainer, and Sonia has been made an Electric/Fire one, retroactively.
  • The dungeon system has been entirely reworked, with new dialog, mechanics, rewards, and tutorials, starting on the 10th of May. Dungeons are now, in my estimation, slightly harder, but much easier to understand, and much faster to go through.
  • Several Foreverals have been removed or changed. You will still have access to any FVLs that have the same name as they had previously, regardless of if you have still fulfilled the conditions to get them.

Narrative Retcons

  • Battle Team outfits have been retroactively added to the meetings, starting on the 14th of May.
  • Eri has been removed from her prior scenes, and will reappear in a more fitting role in a future chapter.
  • Jasmine no longer uses a cane. She still suffers from all other afflictions stated previously. (Poor dear.)
  • Removed Ethan.

Holy shit I thought this game died back in 2020 with the previous. And now it's being regularly updated?!!! I'm gonna try it out for old times sake.

I enjoy this game so much that I am almost willing to forgive that you made Alder say the words "on fleek" and "cap"

Almost.. lol

Most of these make sense and will make the game feel better, but I feel it works better for the story if Wally was actually Psychic/Fairy rather than Psychic/Fighting or Fairy/Fighting. Wally doesn't feel like he fits in with the other Fighting Type trainers, if you get what I mean.
