Dunsparce: Inspired by childhood memories of trying to evolve one into a Gligar in Silver Version and having recently learned about chaining, I decided to try my luck one Christmas when Dunsparce were swarming in Pearl. Despite having no repels or knowing all the tricks I know now, I got it on my first try! By sheer chance, it also had the perfect Nature-Ability combo (Adamant + Serene Grace). I waited until HGSS to start training him and considered him my "mascot" for years.

Tyrogue: I like how it felt like a "secret" Pokémon in GSC/HGSS, tucked away in the depths of Mt. Mortar.

Mothim: I adore moths IRL and spent nearly a year hunting my Shiny Mothim in HGSS. I consider it my "most prized" in-game Pokémon.

Nidoran-M: Mostly because I found a Shiny one in Fire Red years ago (my first "cool" Shiny), plus I legit think it's the cutest Poison-type.

Sandshrew: My first toy from Burger King's first movie promotion.

Omanyte: I remember seeing a book about fossils in my elementary school library and immediately made the connection between Omanyte and ammonites. I also got a Japanese Omanyte (Fossil) card from a friend in 5th grade and it's really nostalgic. Finding a goniatite (small relative of the ammonites) fossil a few years ago may have also shot it up the list.

Shedinja: I've always thought it was interesting with its unique ability and obtaining method, but it wasn't until having an outbreak of periodical cicadas and finding their shells all over the place that I made the connection and really fell in love with it. Turning something that looks like an insect corpse into a Bug/Ghost Pokémon is just perfect! I also dig its aesthetic, reminding me of some kind of ancient relic.

Misdreavus: It's pretty cute, but it really shot up my list after I found a Shiny one in VC Gold.

Alolan Sandslash: A remake of one of my original favorites as my favorite type (Ice)? Sign me up!

Flareon: Its Jungle artwork is really nostalgic and one of my favorite illustrations in the entire TCG. It was also my first full-odds Shiny Eeveelution (but only because I'd already gotten all the others I liked via other methods).

Wartortle: Currently my favorite Pokémon. It has a great aesthetic and, between writing a short story about it with my mom and my dad getting me a bootleg sticker card of it from the gas station (I love those bootleg sticker cards), it's also really nostalgic.

Leafeon: My favorite Eeveelution. I love its cat-like aesthetic and natural yet mystical feel. I cloned the Shiny Eevee I SR'd in VC Gold and transferred it so I could evolve one into Leafeon and find myself wanting to use it almost all the time!

Magneton: Mostly because of Pokémon Snap, but it also stuck out to me being one of the first Shiny Pokémon to appear in the anime. I also remember daydreaming about having a flying, remote-controlled Magnemite toy as a kid.

Mew: We never got the binders around here to my knowledge, but I was fortunate enough to pull a Southern Islands Mew as a hidden bonus card from a third-party blister pack. Mysterious and considered the rarest Pokémon at the time, I was tickled to bits! It's one of my favorite Pokémon cards.

Frosmoth: I adore moths and consider Ice my favorite type, so it's like it was made for me!

Dragonair: It's just really elegant and pretty. It also takes me back to the first movie Burger King cards (and my grandma exclaiming "Eww! It's a snake!" when I showed it to her xD).

Sneasel: It's a pretty cool design, but I think it sticks out most due to my cousin flaunting his OP Neo Geneis Sneasel card back in elementary school. I've also made a few Sneasel cards over the years (recycling the same two artworks), so it—especially Shiny Sneasel—has come to be associated with me among my fellow fakers.

Togetic: Remember evolving Togepi into Togetic in GSC for the first time? So nostalgic!

Lickitung: My first card from Burger King, IIRC. I remember keeping it in the front of my binder and showing it off in class like it was the coolest thing. I even wrote a short story inspired by it for an assignment.

Gallade: It's basically an elf. Elves are cool.

Ho-Oh: My "original" favorite and still my favorite Legendary. I'd always looked up to my cousin (the Sneasel-flaunting one) for his video game skills, so I was thrilled when I beat his Blue Version team on Pokémon Stadium 2, wiping out most of it with my Ho-Oh from Silver. I'd had trouble beating Red on Mt. Silver too, but my cousin told me that I could probably beat him now with my Ho-Oh, so I tried again and it worked! Its appearance in the first episode of the anime was also really neat and mysterious.

Weedle: It was one of my very first Shiny Pokémon and I remember Pokémon Zeo making a really cool glow-in-the-dark Weedle card back in the day. I kind of dig the simplicity of its design.

Sandslash: One of the most nostalgic Gen. I Pokémon to me. Anyone remember getting/seeing this sticker?

Corsola: Most Rock-types aren't that cute, Corsola being one of the few exceptions. It also has my favorite aesthetic Shiny and I was lucky enough to fish one up myself in VC Gold!

Yanma: It's pretty cute. I especially enjoy its Neo Discovery card.

Froslass: A friend from school traded me one and she was awesome, inspiring me to start using a Mono-Ice team. I fancied myself an Ice-type Gym Leader for a while.

Jirachi: Cute! Cute! Cute!

Quilava: Nice balance of cool and cute.

Lapras: I liked using this one in Pokémon Stadium. It also has ties to Johto, my first and favorite region, appearing once a week in Union Cave. I also love its Fossil TCG artwork.

Meganium: My first Starter (fully-evolved) and, IIRC, my first Lv100. I also remember pulling a really cool Meganium card back in the day.

Luxio: IDK, there's just something about it that makes me happy. I've seen some fan art of it that I really like and I remember being excited when I saw them all over the place during a storm on the Isle of Armor.

Chimecho: Object-based Pokémon have a certain charm. Chimecho sticks out for being not only hard-to-find in its debut game but also the last Pokémon programmed into its debut game. Makes you wonder if maybe it was originally going to be a Mythical Pokémon. I've got a Chimecho papercraft hanging in my room. :)

Glaceon: My MVP in Black 2. I'd actually disliked Glaceon but, when I MM'd a Shiny Eevee, I opted to evolve it into Glaceon since I ran a mono-Ice team and came to love it.

Latios: Probably my favorite Legendary in terms of design. It's also one of the last Pokémon that gave me that new Pokémon thrill like the Johto-mon did. (I still enjoy seeing new Pokémon, but it's just not as… fresh, I guess?) I remember when it and Latias were first revealed and how fans were speculating that they might be related to Togepi.

Umbreon: Though not my favorite Eeveelution, I've used Umbreon in more playthroughs than any other Eeveelution. I really enjoy its sleek, edgy aesthetic, though it's a real shame that its 3DS/Switch models don't look as nice as its older models.

Alolan Ninetales: I loves me some Ice-types. I actually prefer Alolan Vulpix, aka the cutest Pokémon, but evolving my Shiny Alolan Vulpix from Ultra Sun into Alolan Ninetales since its Shiny colors were more noticeable on the evolved form made it grow on me.

Eevee: I was originally going to put Furret here, but Eevee has been creeping up my favorites these past few years—first after finding a random Shiny one in X, then finding a Build-a-Bear Eevee at a thrift store, and finally SRing a Shiny one in VC Gold, which I named after my cat since they're both grey and fluffy. I've even given my TrainerSona a Shiny Eevee to represent Ciel and find myself doodling it quite often.

Lucario: No real significance to me, just one of the nicer-looking Fighting-types.

Lugia: Silver was my first game (at least from the main series), so Lugia is pretty nostalgic.

Dragalge: Leafy sea dragons are cool! Although I haven't used Dragalge much (on account of always choosing the game that doesn't have it), the main character's ace from a Yu-Gi-Oh-esque concept I came up with back in middle school was based on a leafy sea dragon.

Quagsire: That charming derpy face.

Lycanroc: Probably the most attractive Rock-type.

Snom: Next to moths, caterpillars are probably my favorite things to look for IRL. And we know I like Ice-types, so…

Haunter: I always preferred using it over Gengar in the Stadium games. It's a tough call between it and Lunala (I loved Nebby in Moon), but Haunter wins out slightly because of Pokémon Snap.

Scizor: Nice design.

Arcanine: Another one I can thank Pokémon Stadium for. Might also be why Dig is one of my favorite moves.

Vaporeon: My original favorite Eeveelution. I used to have a Topps card showing it melting into a puddle which I thought was neat. Also love its Stadium models and HGSS sprite, but I HATE its 3DS/Switch models.

Bayleef: The one I pulled from my first Neo pack is pretty nostalgic.

Raikou: It has a really nice design and its Neo Revelation holo is really nostalgic.

Meowstic-M: There are two things I tend to look for in new batches of Pokémon: Ice-types and cats. Meowstic-M is my favorite Gen. VI Pokémon, Avalugg a close second.

Vanillite: My favorite Gen. V Pokémon, barring Legendaries. Can't say I'm as big a fan of its evolutions, though.

Kingdra: Though I got the other deck, Kingdra's Neo Genesis card screams nostalgia.

Weavile: Used it on my mono-Ice team. Hits hard and fast.

Marill: Cute and nostalgic. I remember having a Marill backpack back in 4th grade.

Bug

Spoiler:

1. Anyone who's seen my posts recently knows my answer. It's Charjabug, also my most favorite Pokémon. It's amazing that they managed to design a cocoon Pokémon so well, since cocoon Pokémon are usually the boring middle stage no one wants to keep. But it has a near-perfect design (I may want to tweak its color scheme a bit) and is actually usable in battle. I really wish I had some Charjabug merch...
2. Shedinja is one of the most gimmicky Pokémon in existence, and I love it because of how weird it is. They made a freaking shed exoskeleton work as a Pokémon. There's just so much unique about Shedinja.
3. I used to despise Illumise, but it's grown on me thanks to some personal experiences. It's a long story, but let's say Illumise has served me well.
Golisopod in an honorable mention. I like Mega Beedrill too.

Dark

Spoiler:

1. Before Charjabug existed, Sneasel was my most favorite Pokémon. I guess I still like Pokémon that look conventionally cool.
2. Honchkrow is a Pokémon I've also grown to love. Have you seen its fainting animation in Battle Revolution? Plus I like the whole mafia aesthetic it has going on.
3. Crawdaunt is the coolest crustacean Pokémon, fight me. Clawitzer's a close second, though.
Send the Galarian Zigzagoon family and Cacturne my regards, too.

Dragon

Spoiler:

1. Dracovish. Yup. This may sound sadistic, but Dracovish's whole deal is amusing to me. How does it eat? How does it breathe? Where are its organs?
2. Appletun, in my opinion, is one of the most cleverly designed Pokémon. I really like the Applin line in general. Not sure how I feel about the "ears" actually being eyes, though.
3. Guzzlord has some pretty interesting lore, and eldritch-inspired Pokémon are a really neat concept.
I also like Sliggoo a lot for reasons that will take too long to explain.

Electric

Spoiler:

1. Oh wow, another Ultra Beast on my list. Xurkitree is probably my favorite Ultra Beast, in terms of design and personality. I really like the name Xurkitree too.
2. Mareep walked so Wooloo could run. Nothing against Wooloo, but Mareep is a much more appealing sheep to me.
3. This was hard, because even though I like the Electric type, some of the Pokémon are just passable. Manectric's color scheme is one I really like, and...I don't know. There's something about it that the other Electric big cats lack.
Shoutouts to Rotom, too. A lot of people also hate Electrode, but I like it for whatever reason.

Fairy

Spoiler:

1. Whimsicott is pretty cute. Yup, that's pretty much my reasoning for it being my favorite.
2. Mimikyu is everyone's favorite Gen VII Pokémon, and it's not hard to see why, especially given its lore.
3. Most Fairy-types are of the girly, cutesy type, so I'm glad something like Grimmsnarl exists for a change of pace. Attacking with hair? That's cool. Only complaint I have with it is how its legs look atrophied which is kinda a trend with newer Pokémon, but it's not like Grimmsnarl's the biggest offender.
I also remember liking Floette a lot for some reason. For some reason I'm also more fond of Kirlia than Gardevoir.

Fighting

Spoiler:

1. Falinks is pretty cute. It's kinda odd that it's a pure Fighting-type, but come on, who wouldn't want a troop of six Kirbys in Spartan armor?
2. Scrafty also has a neat design. It's just full of the exaggerated swagger of a lizard Pokémon. Plus for some reason a lot of Gen V Pokémon have really charming eyes, this one included.
3. It was hard choosing for this one too, but for the exact opposite reason as Electric: there are just a lot of cool Fighting-types. Sirfetch'd, though, probably takes the cake, because it's a perfect example of breathing new life into a formerly ignored Pokémon.
Too many honorable mentions, so I'll just narrow them down to Heracross, Blaziken, Breloom, and Gallade.

Fire

Spoiler:

1. I'll be honest; not too many Fire-types I'm very fond of. Thank goodness Volcarona exists, though, because come on, it's a fiery moth.
2. Lampent. Yeah, not Chandelure, just Lampent. For me, Lampent has something Chandelure lacks... Maybe it's the hat?
3. Oh wow, another one from Gen V. I really like Heatmor. The dopey eyes and the engine motif really make it.
Oh yeah, I like Torkoal too. I'd give an honorable mention to Incineroar, but that's mostly thanks to Smash for giving it personality. I have some grievances with Incineroar, but that's for another time.

Flying

Spoiler:

1. Rowlet is a simple design I really like. I have a fondness for owls. I have a bit of Rowlet merch on me, too.
2. Sigilyph is one of those odd Pokémon that desperately need context. Even with the info we do have on it, there's not much we know about it. It's an anomalous Pokémon, and that's what I like about it.
3. Celesteela, I guess. It's certainly an interesting Pokémon. It's an Ultra Beast, so that's a given. I like its color scheme a lot.
Shoutouts to Swellow, Togekiss, and Braviary. Good job to Rookidee for breaking the mold, too.

Ghost

Spoiler:

1. Recently I've grown really fond of Golurk, because it's basically a mech, and mechs are cool. I could gush on and on about it, but the short of it is: mech = cool.
2. Maybe Mystery Dungeon had a part in it, but I really like Dusknoir. It just exudes the aura of an intimidating cyclops.
3. Alolan Marowak is technically the first Gen I Pokémon on this list. It deserves a spot thanks to the fact that it's pretty much our only Pokémon with neon green in its color scheme (I'm not sure if Pokémon like Skiploom or Politoed count; Game Freak please give us more glowy green ghosts pleaaase).
Okay, there are too many cool Ghost-types. Sableye, Co***rigus, Aegislash, Dhelmise, Blacephalon, and Dragapult are just some I cherrypicked.

Grass

Spoiler:

1. Treecko has been tied for my favorite starter with Rowlet. There's just something really amusing about the fact that it pretty much T-poses all the time for no explicable reaosn.
2. Tropius, even though its stats suck, is a conceptually neat Pokémon. Flying plant dinosaur? Sign me in.
3. Steenee is pretty cute. I guess its charm is strong enough for me to put it in the Top 3 without any other reason.
Tangela, the Lotad family, and Maractus get an honorable mention.

Ground

Spoiler:

1. Palpitoad's goofiness is enough to win it a Number 1 spot, because frankly I have a complicated relationship with the Ground type.
2. Stunfisk. Wow, contentious pick, I know. I guess I could also give a shoutout to its Galarian Form. They're both funny fish.
3. I used to really love Gliscor, but for some reason I don't as much anymore. Maybe I don't like fighting against it and Gligar.
Flygon, Claydol, Krookodile, and Sandaconda get honorable mentions for me, though. Also Diggersby because the funny.

Ice

Spoiler:

1. Now we're cooking. That's irony, because cooking makes things hotter, and- Vanilluxe. Yup. Another one people like to hate. I don't know, it's kinda cute. So is Vanillite. Not Vanillish, though.
2. I guess I like Cryogonal enough for me to place it here? I don't know. It's definitely one of the more bizarre Pokémon, similar to Sigilyph.
3. Alolan Sandshrew is pretty cute. It's funny that it's still named Sandshrew, though.
I have quite a few honorable mentions here. Let's give them to Glalie, Spheal, Froslass, Frosmoth, and Eiscue.

Normal

Spoiler:

1. Smeargle has a fun gimmick going on with Sketch. I like its concept too; if only the games gave it other colors than just green, though.
2. A trend you'll see on this list is that it's gonna have Pokémon that don't evolve to or from anything, and are gimmicky. Kecleon is one of those Pokémon. I guess I really like chameleons?
3. This one is kind of a tie, but I'll give it to Castform. Something about its design is incredibly appealing, despite how utterly simple it is.
Castform was tied with Dunsparce, and honestly I'm still not sure which one I like more. Other Normal-types I really like include the Porygon family, Regigigas, and Bouffalant. Greedent is also very, very funny. This is important.

Poison

Spoiler:

1. Ah yes, my favorite type, full of unremarkable Pokémon. Good thing Roserade isn't one of them. It looks pretty cool.
2. Poipole is also one of my favorite Ultra Beasts. For an alien especially, it's adorable.
3. Galarian Slowbro has an arm cannon. AN ARM CANNON. While this is probably the last Pokémon some people have in mind when they think of "hey we should give this thing an arm cannon", I'll take what I can get. It also manages to not make the purple-pink color scheme look horrible.
Toxtricity gets an honorable mention, but it's not going anywhere higher on this list if it keeps skipping leg day. Shoutouts to the best Pokémon, Qwilfish.

Psychic

Spoiler:

1. Natu is the second best spherical bird, trailing Rowlet. I like its vacant stare.
2. Espurr is pretty cute, too. I've grown fond of Espurr on account of having a plushie of it, I guess.
3. Indeedee is one of Gen VIII's simpler designs, and I think it's charming.
Honorable mentions will get crowded this time too: Wobbuffet, Lunatone, Solrock, Deoxys, and Reuniclus.

Rock

Spoiler:

1. Cradily. Something about it just feels alien. Maybe it's the Grass/Rock typing. Maybe it's the markings on its body that look like eyes. Or the fact that its real eyes are in there.
2. I'm also including the other Gen III fossil, Armaldo. I guess it just looks cool, but I could also thank Mystery Dungeon for liking this one.
3. Gen III stays winning with its designs, because Aggron is cool too. I think that Aggron video from like ten years ago speaks for itself.
Honorable mentions go to Nosepass for some reason. I like Relicanth, Gigalith, Carracosta, and Lycanroc too.

Steel

Spoiler:

1. Scizor is yet another mainstream pick for me. Come on, what isn't to like about Scizor?
2. Metagross is arguably the best pseudo-legendary Pokémon on account of it not being another saurian creature. Saurians are cool, but Metagross doesn't need to be a dragon or Godzilla to be cool.
3. And here we have another Gen III Steel/Psychic-type, Jirachi. I'm usually not a fan of Mythical Pokémon, but Jirachi? It's too cute to not like.
Shoutouts to Bisharp, Cobalion, and Kartana.

Water

Spoiler:

1. Pyukumuku is a neat take on a sea cucumber, and I like how expressive it is with its...uh...limb.
2. I really like Milotic a lot too. There's something about its design that interests me.

There are a lot of Water-types, and because of that it got tiring making a Top 3. Wooper, Whiscash, and Clawitzer are just a few of the ones I really like. I like the Sobble family too.

This is a little difficult for me because there are some types where there are a ton and there are some where there's not much and I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Lol. Thus you end up with some of my overall favorite Pokemon in the third category alongside some that I'm more neutral toward. And then there's Poison where I struggled to find anything and just had to be like "The Nidorans are kinda cute, I guess?" lol

Also, I tried to avoid using more than one of an evolution chain (which I counted the regional forms as separate. Also Eevee evolutions I made an exception because I just couldn't otherwise) which made things more difficult.

Decided to swap Furret for Eevee. Though I still adore Furret, Eevee has been creeping up my favorites these past few years, first after finding a random Shiny one in X, then finding a Build-a-Bear Eevee at a thrift store, and finally SRing a Shiny one in VC Gold, which I named after my cat since they're both grey and fluffy. I've even given my TrainerSona a Shiny Eevee to represent Ciel and find myself doodling it quite often.
