If you didn't pick Chimchar as your starter, prior to receiving the National Dex, you only had the Ponyta line to choose from for Fire-type Pokémon. They even decided to include a member of the Elite Four that uses Fire-type Pokémon specifically. However, Platinum version fixed all this.

How did you feel about the lack of Fire-types?

Annoyed, was hoping to have more than 2 different fire types available, especially since I didn't pick Chimchar at the start of the game.

It was also rather strange to include a fire type trainer in the Elite 4 given that most of his team wouldn't even be fire types, thus making it impossible for Flint to seriously be considered a 'Master Fire Type Trainer'.

I'm not too bothered by the lack of fire types but two things are weird about their decision- the lack of Magmar and the existence of Flint. Why not have Magmar when Magmortar is new? And not letting Flint have more of a fire team. The heck, man.

I've never picked Turtwig or Piplup as my starter so I've never really considered this. Infernape is too good of a Pokemon for me to want more Fire types. :d

EDIT: thanks PageEmperor, I actually wrote this while I was at school so I wasn't paying attention. xD

I always picked Chimchar in Diamond so I never noticed it until I actually read through the regional dexes on Bulbapedia. It's pretty ridiculous - Fire has always been one of the most scarce types but Sinnoh took it to another level. Even Platinum only had one or two more Fire-type families than DP, so the lack is still definitely noticeable.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of all the Electricity I'm using! Ah, really though it never bothered me too much. I always liked The two stage Fire types (Rapidash, Ninetales, Arkanine) so I never really noticed. I did notice many Pokémon that I never used though*sigh* Like: Floatzel, Gastrodon, Bidoof, Cherrim, Wormadam, Mothim, Krickitune, Purugly, Hipowdon, all of the 'new' evolutions (Besides Electivire because Electivire looks pretty cool), Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, and Chatot. Never used them, and probably never will unfortunately. Fire Type Pokémon didn't concern me. I did find it weird that Flint was like, a Regular Pokémon Trainer and not a Fire Type Trainer specifically though. Lopunny? Let me teach you my Fighting moves.

I've never picked Turtwig or Oshawott as my starter so I've never really considered this. Infernape is too good of a Pokemon for me to want more Fire types. :d

    Think you meant Piplup?

I never had issues with the lack of fire mons actually. I've only played DP once and for that I ised a Skuntank with Flamethrower. In my first time Playing Plat I had no Fire mons so I just attacked bug/metal mons with my best moves. For other Plat runs I had fire mons(Picked Chimchar in my 2nd nuzrun and caught 2 fire mons in my 1st nuzrun)

I never really minded the lack of Fire types, primarily because I rarely used them. Turtwig was always my baby and I have a tendency to level my Pokemon 10 levels or so beyond what they need to be at any given point in the game. :P I find that it helped on top of strategics with move sets.

This was actually the reason why Chimchar became my most-picked Sinnoh starter, because I rememer the first time I played Pearl (no wait, it was actually Diamond) where my starter choice was Piplup (I actually wanted to mimic Dawn in the anime back then) and I was like "damn the type distribution is bad".

Platinum did fix this issue a bit, but it still feels like there's not enough fire in Sinnoh to me.

I've never picked Chimchar for a run. I'll still have to plan a team for that, but i kinda wanna play Randomizers more now, but i can't since i screwed up my UP Randomizer.

For a Fire type in 4th Gen, i always went with Houndoom. It is a decent Pokemon, and while it doesn't exude too much variety, it hits hard with a nice Special Attack stat.

I've used Rapidash in my first 4th Gen run of all time, and he wasn't that good as i recall.

The lack of Fire types in DP is a perfect example of the importance of type diversity in dex rosters, especially if you're planning to use a Fire specialist as a gym leader or Elite Four member. And it really saddens me that Poketuber ABrandentothePast hates Platinum Flint for being "easier" than DP Flint when Platinum Flint was a major improvement.
