Because Gengar has good Special attack but its Attack is low. Plus it only gets STAB from physical moves (Ghost and Poison).

My friend said Gengar should have been ghost/psychic since it could do psychic. BUt I thought that would e stupid. Because of 4x weaknesses to Dark and Ghost. If you ask me, Ghost should of been a special attack type. Becuase ghosts are mostly dead. So how can you make physical contact??

Anyway im going offtopic. I made this thread to get a good set for gengar. To take advantage of its base SP.Attk of 130.

    Special Attacking Gengar, go!

    Gengar @Leftovers
    Nature: Timid
    Thunderbolt
    Ice Punch
    Giga Drain/Fire Punch
    Destiny Bond/Will-o-wisp/Hypnosis

Thunderbolt and Ice Punch work together to take care of nearly every Pokemon in the game. Gengar's third attack depends on who your team has the most trouble with. If your team doesn't like Metagross, give it Fire Punch. If your team hates Swampert, give it Giga Drain. And its always nice to have a support move for your final slot.

Use McGar or a hypnosis/Fire Punch variation:

    Gengar (M) @ Leftovers
    Trait: Levitate
    EVs: 196 Atk / 184 Spd / 128 SAtk
    Hasty Nature (+Spd, -Def)
    - Focus Punch
    - Ice Punch / Fie Punch
    - Substitute / Hypnosis
    - Thunderbolt / Fire Punch

    Hope this helps.

    gengar:
    ice punch
    shadow punch
    wil-o-wisp
    fire punch

    hope you like it.

    Thunderbolt
    Ice Punch
    Giga Drain
    Hyponsis/Destiny Bond

    That's what I would do.

No. Hyponsis-Nightmare-Dream Eater falls, believe me. The opponent switchs out and you've wasted turns. :(

Don't take it too harshly but shadow punch sucks. Put in tbolt over that and its a standard tri sp. attacking filler gar. Or you could be creative and use shadow ball, fpunch, sub/destiny bond/confuse ray/explosion, will-o-wisp

ohh ok then :( i thought that was a good combo

People would be using that all time in NetBattle if it was a good combo. They obviously have their reasons for liking TriGar.

I say shadow punch, destiny bond, explosion/psychic and giga drain.

Shadow Punch stinks. You shouldn't even teach Gengar Shadow Ball.

Explosion or Psychic a Gengar doesn't cut it.

The TriGar is cool I think. :)

Psychic Gengar o Netbattle is craptacular but Explosion fits him very well.

Ingame Gengar just go Thunderbolt/Ice Punch/Psychic or Giga Drain/Hypnosis

    That's good in-game.

Explosion and Focus Punch should be the only physical moves a Gengar should know unless you're using an Adamant Gengar but I think Adamant Gengar stinks compared to TriGar. :)

Yeah, Shadow Punch doesn't have as much power as Shadow Ball, and even that doesn't help Gengar?
Doesn't a attack move increase in power slightly when used by a Pokemon of the same type?

Well, if you consider 50% a slight increase then yeah. But that doesn't change the fact that Gengar's Attack is pretty suckadelic, which makes only the seriously hard-hitting moves (I.e. Explosion and Focus Punch) powerful enough to be worthwhile. Meh, the good sets have been covered, though, so just go with them. MCgar and Trigar are the way to go.

I think McIceGar is old and out of style. TriGar is prefered.

And it's precisely the old and out-of-style builds that tend to be worth using. Seriously, if your opponent is expecting you to use Trigar, which is the better situation? Actually having a Trigar and getting walled by that Curselax or having McGar and laughing at your opponent when you land a Focus Punch? Really, going with the very latest isn't always the best option. -.-

I'd like to McGar using Focus Punch against physical walls like Skarmory or Steelix. Gengar's Attack stinks. So are you saying you should go with Adamant McGar? :\
