Heya, I have Pokemon Moon which is my very first pokemon game. So my question is - as the titel suggest- following: Which other pokemon games are worth playing? Which one has the best story? There is alot of different pokemon games and remakes so I'm a bit lost and don't know how to navigate it all.

    Thanks in advance,

Btw I read all comments even if I don't reply!

I don't think that there's any true consensus on what the best main series Pokemon games are, but for me personally Pokemon's peak was during generations 4 and 5. Though speaking of gen 5, Black/White and their sequels, Black2/White2 are more often than not considered to be the best story in Pokemon, relatively speaking.

You can cut down on the number of games to look at by ignoring Red/Blue, Gold/Silver, Ruby/Sapphire, and Diamond/Pearl. Would've also said Sun/Moon but you already got that so too late. Those ones all have another version that's basically a slight improvement (Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum) and so aren't really worth considering, especially when three of those also have remakes (Fire Red/Leaf Green, Heartgold/Soulsilver, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire).

If you like story the most in a Pokémon game, Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky has THE best story out of any Pokémon game in existence imo. I've never played it, but I've also heard Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness has an amazing story. If you are only interested in the main series games, though, Sun/moon probably has the most involved story and cutscenes, and Black/White/Black2/White2 also have very good characters and storylines.

Best story? Well, if I'm being honest in all this, the Diamond/Pearl/Platinum games do. I also think Black/White, Black2/White2 and Pokemon Emerald also have really decent stories, but the Sinnoh games, just in my opinion, have the strongest. The first few Pokemon games (Red/Blue Gold/Silver) don't have a big story, if I'm being honest.

But, if you want a Pokemon game that's outside the main series game that has a really amazing story, I'd say Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky. They arguably have the best story of any Pokemon game. So, if you're willing to branch out to spinoffs, I'd definitely recommend one of those games. It doesn't really matter which one of these three you play, as there's only small differences between them.

Personally, my favourite games are Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. I may be biased in this, since the original Pokémon Sapphire was my first Pokémon game, but I honestly think that OR and AS are the pinnacle of the series. Lots to do, loads of creatures, and I like the world of Hoenn.

In terms of the story I would say gen 3 & 4 are the most interesting (excluding gen 7 & 8, which I can't speak to). I would recommend Emerald and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire for the Hoenn story, and Platinum for Sinnoh.

So in my opinion there are two ways to answer your question:
    1. What do most people think are good pokemon games that are worth playing?
    2. What Pokémon game is worth playing for you?

Basically, from what I've observed, fans seem to love the following games(in no particular order): Heartgold and Soul Silver, Platinum, Black and White 2(some love Black and White, but their sequels seem preferred), Emerald, and Crystal. It seems the newer games(Gen 6-8, though SwSh seems overwhelmingly positive so far) get more mixed reviews, but that is just my observation. Maybe opinions are just stronger about them right now because they are newer.

Now that being said, what matters most is your experience and enjoyment with it. There is just something special about playing your first Pokémon game that is hard to explain. My first game was yellow, but then I got gold and just fell in love with Johto, so my all time faves are heart gold and soul silver as perfected versions of the gen 2 games I grew up with and love. I also LOVE Unova because it got me back into Pokémon within the last few years, so it kinda holds a special place in my heart now.

So go ahead and enjoy the crap out of Moon. You will prob compare other Pokémon games against it and have fond memories attached to it, and that's great! Personally, I'd recommend HG/SS and The gen 5 games, but that's because I enjoy them the most for the reasons mentioned above. So that gives you plenty to work with, but at the end of the day, I'd say enjoy moon and then see where your heart leads you from there. :)

Crystal is my all time favorite game but the best game is probably BW2. The story was amazing and the variety of Pokemon available was really top tier. Definitely worth playing!

I loved G/S/C and HeartGold/Soulsilver, but I gotta give credit to X/Y. I felt that they were super underrated and it was the one game series I truly enjoyed the most.

I loved them too, they were absolutely fantastic in every respect (the story, the graphics, the region, the battles, the pokémon, etc...). My only issue with them was the lack of a post-game, and perhaps also the fact that there were only 72 new pokémon.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky

    No competition whatsoever.

Everything about this game is well-thought out and compelling. The music is so beautiful and iconic, the storyline is fantastic and is full of twists and turns, the characters are multi-dimensional and colourful, and the villains are splendid. This game is the complete package.

I would recommend that you play Emerald. The gameplay is quick and snappy, the story is kept to a minimum (focusing instead on exploration), and the world of Hoenn is one of the best designed in the series.

Then you could try FireRed/Leafgreen if you want to play the very first game with updated mechanics, or skip to HeartGold/SoulSilver (a very well received remake of an already very well received classic entry), and then Platinum (another great entry). And if you've become a fan on the way, try Colosseum and/or Gale of Darkness (a great acquired taste for true enthusiasts IMO)

    Good luck!

For the main series games, imo Generations 3 and 4 were the best, specifically Pokemon Emerald, Platinum and Heart Gold/Soul Silver. Do play those and if they're rather outdated for you, you could always play their respective enhancement hacks, which you'll find plenty of in this forum's ROM hacking section. Honestly though, like another user said, I find the spin-off games aka Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series, to be much better than the main series games. And I find ROM hacks and fangames better than the main series games as well.

My favourite Pokemon game is Emerald as I've probably said more times on this forum than I can count. But, in terms of objectively the best game without factoring in nostalgia, bias etc, I'd have to say HGSS. The games really had everything you want as a Pokemon fan, two regions, Pokemon following you, a battle frontier and more! If you fix the Johto level curve, and ignore the stereotypical Team Rocket story, these games were near perfect imo.

In terms of the best story, I'd have to say Gen 5 without a doubt, BW and BW2 had some seriously good post-game content as well, with half the region to explore, the PWT etc, which goes a long way for me.
