What is marking for?

Is it just for having a lot of the same type of pokemon and identifying them as individuals or is there another reason? What I mean by marking is when you put them in the PC boxes and you can mark them with stars, circles, squares, other shapes, etc.

Marking is left up to the player to use it as they wish and for what reason. Another that I've seen is the use of marking when mass-breeding Pokemon, so you keep track of the best off-spring and what-not, I suppose.

I suppose the most obvious is that if you egg lots of the same Pokemon and want to remember a specific Pokemon, you can put a marking on it. I used it to remember the first Meowth I caught (I have a box full of them because it's my favourie Pokemon XD)

Organization purely. You can mark different Pokemon however you want, and whenever you see that mark in your PC, you know what kind of Pokemon it is, depending on what you want that mark to be.

For example, I mark all of my HM slaves with a triangle. That way, when I'm searching through boxes, I can easily see which Pokemon I gave HMs to (and guess which ones they hold) just by looking under their names and levels on the side of the screen. That way, I can easily pull out a Pokemon I need to get through a certain part of the game without having to scroll through info pages to find Pokemon with HMs. I do the same with contest Pokemon I don't name but have maxed out contest stats with.

(If I recall correctly, you can also filter your Pokemon based on the mark you gave them in DP, but I don't have my copy on hand. Anyone want to verify this?)

I've always wondered this too, but in D/P [not sure about other games] you can scroll through your boxes having only Pokemon with specific markings show up. So I guess you could mark each shiny/legend/EVtrained/etc. for an easy find.

Xanthine, that is true what you put at the bottom.

Oh okay I didn't know that. So when scanning my PC boxes, if I mark certain pokemon, there's a way I can just make them show up like how when you move items only pokemon with items show up?

I usually thought marking was for many organizition purposes really, but I just mark the pokemon that are most special to me in a way...and I do not think u can search for a pokemon with a certain mark like u do with items in the PC though...

Organisation. If I'm breeding, I usually mark the eggs that people give you (the ones that contain rarer Pokemon), like that lady at the hot springs in RSE. I don't know if she's in Emerald, but you get my point. That way, I know if they're just *another* Pichu, or something special!

    fangirl- She is in Emerald

QuickKid- I believe you can search their markings.

Treeko- I use it for like Ev trained pokemon, Iv'd pokemon, Events, ect. Like marking a pokemon so you can quickly find it.

Since this thread is turning to what we use the marking system for, I guess I'll join in.

I use it for IV breeding only. I use the marks to keep track on where the flawless IVs are located. It is very convenient that they have 6 marks now which I use to represent the 6 stats of a Pokemon. I mark them in the order of HP/Attack/Defense/Special Attack/Special Defense/Speed. If a Pokemon has 31 IVs in HP, Special Attack, and Speed, I would place a mark the first, fourth, and sixth symbol for easy reference.

Marking is orginization for your Pokemon Boxes. Put a marking on a Pokemon that goes in a certain box. And so on.
Although i don't use markings, It's pretty good to sort out your boxes so you know what you have.

I always thought that the markings were to mark pokémon that you had multiple types of. Like having 3 Cyndaquils and you can mark it with a triangle, heart, and square so you could know who was who.

that's exactly how I was thinking

I use it for breeding organization. I breed Riolus with different movesets, and its easier to give certain movesets certain marks so I don't have to look at their moves to know which batch they belong to.

I use it to organize things for Wifi....If I ever get it =[

I use it for eggs, having multiple amounts of the same pokemon (and randomly marking my favourite pokemon with all shapes XD)
