I always nickname the pokemon I'm going to use, often after characters from my Pokemon fanfics. Some have ended up sticking as well. I always call my female mawile Faith. Mothim often gets called Flutterwick or Binky. Absol is Delirious (female) or Harbinger (male). Lillipup has three names I choose from. N00b (because of a fanfic I wrote), Wuffles or England (England is from an old Nuzlocke where I named them after anime characters lol).

Here are some other examples:
Treecko - LeafyGreens
Umbreon - Bree
Kecleon - Espio (Sonic anyone?)
Unfeazant (male) or Masquerain - Masquerade
Reshiram - Resho or Reshie
Gliscor - GlompGlomp

A couple of new ones on my current competitive team are Bel Canto the Primarina and Compote the Tsareena. Those are two names that might stick around for a while now like the others have lol.

I like giving my Pokemon people names that suit their appearances and personality.

For example, my Decidueye's name is Leif. More would be my Milotic's name being Serenity, and Gardevoir is Grace. Charmeleon being Cole, things like that.

I enjoy naming them this way. Makes me feel a good amount of attachment to them.

I love having names based on a theme or just references to characters I like in other series. Or I like to name some after food. For Pokemon moon I have a few nicknames so far;
  • Decidueye - Apollo
  • Shiny Hariyama - Lil'Maku
  • Toucannon - Pearl
  • Shiny Mudsdale -Valkyrie
  • Shiny and regular Tsareena - Jolyne
  • Kommo-o - Dio
  • Pikachu - Kona (Kona coffee yay )
  • Vikavolt - Volts

When it comes to the nicknames I give to my Pokemon, I tend to make sure that the nicknames follow the theme I have for the team. I will list examples of nicknames that I have given each of my team leaders. Here are the leaders of each of my teams:
Delta the Blastoise (Leader of my Star Wars Republic Commando Squads team in Blue)(reference: Delta Squad from Star Wars Republic Commando)
Galvatron the Feraligatr (Leader of my Decepticons team in Soul Silver)(reference: G1 Galvatron from Transformers)
Revan the Swampert (Leader of my Star Wars Sith Lords team in Sapphire)(reference: Darth Revan from Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic)
Napoleon the Empoleon (Leader of my World Leaders team in Platinum)(reference: Napoleon Bonaparte)
Durendal the Samurott (Leader of my Legendary Weapons team in White)(reference: Durendal from the Song of Roland)
John Rambo (Leader of my Anti-Heroes team in White 2)(reference: John Rambo from the Rambo movies)
Enterprise the Greninja (Leader of my World War II Ships team in X)(reference: American aircraft carrier Enterprise CV-6)
Luke the Swampert (Leader of my Star Wars Jedi team in Alpha Sapphire)(reference: Luke Skywalker from Star Wars)
Garland the Blastoise (Leader of my Final Fantasy Villains team in Blue)(virtual console version)(reference: Garland from Final Fantasy I)
Zebes the Primarina (Leader of my Metroid Series Planets team in Moon)(reference: Zebes from the Metroid series)

I used to nickname my Pokemon the Japanese version of their names because I was a weeb. Then I discovered the French names sounded really pretty/cool, so I went a while nicknaming them that. Now I nickname on a whim, doing puns on Pokemon names or just making something cutesy that draws from the original name, if that makes any sense.

And then sometimes I just have no idea what to name a Pokemon, panic, and just name it a sound effect.

When I can't think of a good English name for mine, I like resorting to German. For example, Litten is Flamiau in German, and there is no better name to exist!!! Glad to see that others like using foreign languages too!

After taking a long look at my Pokemon upon capture I try to select a name that I feel represents their apearance, typing or some other feature about them well. Often the names are derived from myths, foreign languages and literary characters or some of my favorite movies or animes.

I have a Kyogre named Styx which I took from the river of Styx. In Greek Mythology Styx is the river that the dead travel down to get to the afterlife. I thought it fit to name Kyogre after a mythic river because she is a water Pokemon who brings a storm herever she goes. I also thought something ancient, dark and mysterious would make sense for a legendary Pokemon who nearly destroyed the world.

I have a Nidoqueen named Lys, referencing the poison "tears of Lys" used to kill people in Game of thrones because this is a female, poison type Pokemon.

I have a Gengar named Hyde as in the notorious Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Those are just a couple of examples of the names I have cooked up.

i don't really go with any consistent theme I just kinda name them cute things or weird-sounding names idk. I really enjoy coming up with nicknames but a lot of the time they don't make much sense haha.

in Sun I have:
Nightsfire the Marowak no clue what it's supposed to mean I just wanted kind of a spooky fire-related name because of its alolan typing.
swirlybird the Decidueye my old username on this forum was Swirlybirds, and I just find it cute.
hoverboard the Raichu first thing that popped into my head when I saw that it floats.
shadowtank the Umbreon the only literal one it's a dark-type and it's a really good tank haha.
Ariel the Primarina got in a trade.
qt triad the Dugtrio abbreviated form of "cutie triad" because I absolutely love alolan dugtrio.

My nicknames in X and OR don't make much sense either, but I think I've posted them in an earlier iteration of this thread so I won't bother here.

When I was a kid, I used to give them human names for some reason i.e. "I named this Typhlosion Craig because he looks like a Craig."

Nowadays, I either name them after fictional characters that they remind me of or of words that would suit them.

This is my Y team's nicknames:
Hex the Delphox (Named that because she looks like a witch/sorceress)
Kappa the Golduck (Self explanatory)
Marluxia the Venusaur (Named after a Kingdom Hearts character whose power involves flowers)
Po the Pangoro (Kung Fu Panda)
Sylvia the Sylveon (Only because I couldn't think of a better name)
Toothless the Goodra (No points for guessing why)

Moon team:
Link the Decidueye (Not only does he kind of remind me of Link from LoZ, but also because it represents the link between our friendship)
Puka the Raichu (Named after the surfing Pikachu from the anime)
Wolfgang the Lycanroc (Named after a wolf Skylander who likes to rock)
Cynder the Salazzle (Named after Cynder the dragon from Legend of Spyro and Skylanders)
Aurora the Ninetales (Because she's an ice type and I think that name suits her)
Kokoro-O the Kommo-O (Kokoro is Japanese for heart and Jangmo-O has a heart shape on its head)

My original White 2 team are named after Vocaloids:
Gakupo the Samurott (They're both samurais)
Kagamine the Ampharos (Rin and Len's last name and because it's yellow)
Meiko the Magmortar (Red and because I can picture Meiko having a fiery personality)
Miku the Lilligant (Green and I can picture them both with a calm personality)
Gumi the Flygon (Green with red goggles)
Kaito the Vanilluxe (Ice cream)

I never really have a nicknaming theme when casually playing through games, it's more of a matter of what I can think of on the spot. If I'm doing a challenge then I'll apply some sort of theme such as greek gods, fruits etc.
