Africa's western black rhino is now officially extinct according the latest review of animals and plants by the world's largest conservation network.

The subspecies of the black rhino -- which is classified as "critically endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species -- was last seen in western Africa in 2006.

The IUCN warns that other rhinos could follow saying Africa's northern white rhino is "teetering on the brink of extinction" while Asia's Javan rhino is "making its last stand" due to continued poaching and lack of conservation.

"In the case of the western black rhino and the northern white rhino the situation could have had very different results if the suggested conservation measures had been implemented," Simon Stuart, chair of the IUCN species survival commission said in a statement.

"These measures must be strengthened now, specifically managing habitats in order to improve performance, preventing other rhinos from fading into extinction," Stuart added.

The IUCN points to conservation efforts which have paid off for the southern white rhino subspecies which have seen populations rise from less than 100 at the end of the 19th century to an estimated wild population of 20,000 today.
This is horrible, humanity used to struggle to survive against nature; now, nature struggles against us.

This is sad. The word "extinct" always used to make me so sad in elementary school. It sounds so final...plus there's an x in there, which I see as a harsh letter. ...Anyway, enough of my childhood vocabulary. It's sad this species is gone. :(

This is a sad thing. I wish humans were less selfish and didnt feel the need to kill everything else.

Just saying but species will go extinct even without human interference.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Oh my god I love rhinos! Smh rn I am not even kidding. I don't think I can even express with words how much hatred I feel towards people responsible, I just feel infuriated and in despair. How long is this gonna go on, how long are humans going to continue taking over the world and driving away our fellow creatures and taking their place? I know that nature is also a factor but like most people said already it was mostly because of poachers, we are speeding up the cycle and that's a vicious circle.

This is a very sad thing to hear! Couldn't imagine the world 50 years from now, if the humans are going to continue to do the same thing over and over again. :(

Hopefully, this will prove to be a sort of 'wake-up call' for all of us. More for those ignorant people who refuse to acknowledge the meaning of the word 'conservation'. Unaware and illiterate people can't be helped, but that's as far as the horizon of understanding extends.

    This would not have happened if the suggested conservation measures were taken/implemented. This is just sad. ;__;

I wonder why these poachers do what they do. Who's buying the rhino... er, parts? (is it just the horn they're after, or the meat, or what?) and who isn't stopping them from selling? Who's letting this happen? Why haven't the people who are trying to stop poaching not able to do a better job?

I think it's generally for the horn, although in some cultures it could be meet.

As for the whole who's stopping them thing, I don't really see what more we could be doing. We can't keep all rhinos in captivity or under surveillance (although I assume we were breeding them in captivity? How can they go extinct if this is the case?). Unfortunately, poachers will always find somewhere else that we don't know about and hunt the animals there.

As for my thoughts on the rhino? While it doesn't effect me personally - I've never really had any preference for rhinos as animals or for, thank God, the products made from them - but I still think it's awful that they've been made extinct. Even after all the support they get and all, poachers still persist and still make rhinos extinct. And although I don't know what else we could be doing, I just wish, well, we could have done more. But that's poachers for you.

Why don't we poach the poachers? ◕‿◕

    Sounds like a plan.

But in all seriousness, this is terrible. It saddens me deeply to know that this animal has gone extinct. It's disgusting that people actually have so few morals that they would kill these animals! I don't even know what to say to it. I'm disgusted, poaching is horrible, wrong. That's one less species on the planet, and I fear we'll be seeing more and more articles like this about other animals, you'd think once an animal becomes critically endangered that would be enough and Government's would actually crackdown on poaching - Clearly it isn't, I'd like to hope that this will call for a new dawn in animal preservation and perhaps have some impact on whats being done about poaching but unfortunately, I highly doubt it will.

But yeah, this saddens me, an amazing species is now gone and we're never going to get them back...

Not related to the rhino, but I was reading up on animal extinction and learned that there's an entire genus of animals on the edge of extinction, the hirola. It never even occurred to me that an entire genus of animals could go extinct even though there's no reason it couldn't happen if we don't stop destroying habitats and poaching. :(

Why don't we poach the poachers? ◕‿◕
Good idea. Just equip the endangered species with weapons, and watch them win. ......../sarcasm

I wish they would stop poaching and stuff, but in all honestly, what are we going to do about it? Beat them up? Whether we like it or not, there will always be poachers.

Poaching laws would need to be enforced better for them to be effective. Sadly, countries in Africa are using what little resources they have for political purposes. Many parts of the continent are war zones. That leaves little to enforce anti-poaching laws.
