Ok so Red defeats Giovanni, he disbands team rocket and then leaves and no one will hear from him ever again, in most recent games Blue takes his spot in the gym but, is it temporary or Blue takes over the gym forever?

After the events of G/S (up to now), do you think Blue is still a gym leader in viridian city, or did he give up and kept travelling? do you guys think Blue character fits as gym leader? and if he gave up, who do you think could take his place?

Since this is more manga-inclined, Red gave up because of his illness that disabled him at times and could be potentially dangerous during battles. So he went to Mt.Silver after hearing there's some sort of spa there so he can heal. Blue takes his place after he took down all those guys and Red appointed him as well. He takes Blue's Charizard though o.o

I think Blue is a good guy and quite the good choice for the gym; it suits his flavour and is as close to Pallet Town as he can get. If anything, the gym could shift to Pallet Town, but that's that. I don't see any potential replacements.

If it's not about the manga and rather about the games and Origins anime though - I don't think the game rival Blue was a good choice for a leader. In the original games, he was immature and selfish. That's not how a gym leader should be. They should be able to guide and teach trainers and challengers about important aspects of pokemon training.

However, Blue was the ex-champion, so maybe his powerful title gave him authority enough to become a gym leader. Don't completely see why they would pick him otherwise.

In the Pokemon Adventures manga though, I agree with Hoenn. That was how the authors explained the changes between the RBY and GSC games and I liked that explanation. Even though it's maybe not 100% applicable to the game story. Only if you squint.

If not Gary, then the girl who's grandpa is grumpy (coffee guy!) should have become gym leader. It would be a cool callback twist!

Personally, I think it was a good idea to appoint Blue as the Viridian City gym leader. Blue is essentially Gary in the Pokémon anime; Blue may be a little childish in the anime, but in the games though, he seems to be a lot more mature and capable enough to run things on his own. d: Gym leaders are never permanent, as they always get replaced by someone else when they decide to hang up their boots—Blue should be no different. Nobody would be able to tell how long Blue would be able to run the gym, exactly, but he's quite young now, so unless he decides to relocate to another region, I'm expecting him to be the Viridian gym leader for at least more twenty years. After that, his sister may be able to take over for him. If the league decides not to hand the gym over to his sister, then I hope they give it to someone who's young, mature, dedicated, and is a lot passionate about Pokémon. (:

Having already been the champion of the Indigo League (albeit as brief as it was), living just one town away from Viridian and being the grandson of Professor Oak probably made it an easy decision to name Blue the Viridian Gym leader. Sure, he might've been pretty childish back during our first encounters with him in the game, but two years is plenty of time for someone to mature, especially at that age. That being said, he has been known to disappear from the Gym at times, even when trainers want to face him for a badge. So he might've grown up a bit, but still makes some questionable decisions.

Nevertheless, I would expect that his position is as permanent as he wants it to be. Plus, he could always pull a Wallace in the future in the event that Lance steps down as Champion, considering he'd probably be the best candidate for the job. After that though, I'm not sure who would replace Blue as Viridian's Gym leader. Maybe just one of the other trainers in the Gym, or even someone completely different.

Giovanni's presence in the Pokémon World Tournament suggests that he must have returned to the role, but hey, Lenora and the Striaton Triplets suggest otherwise, sooo... Viridian Gym seems like the oddball Gym, doesn't it? Blue's lack of Type specialty stands out as a testament to this... Wouldn't be too crazy to figure that there are just two Viridian Gym Leaders!

As for how Blue got that into that position in the first place... I like to think he underwent some major character development after his championship battle against Red. He DOES seem a lot less punchably terrible during his tenure as a Gym Leader, still arrogant and a bit condescending, but not nearly as bad as he used to be. Erudite, even. Former Champion with a strong capacity for personal growth? Sounds like Gym Leader material to me!

The real question is how GIOVANNI ever got to be a League official...

I believe that Blue is a temporary choice of Gym leader until Virdian can find a suitable replacement,i say this because Blue is not the kind of guy to just give up traveling and become a Gym leader,Besides in the games Blue is often traveling even though he is the Gym leader. Also a Nurse Joy says that someone came in and everything and said when they left they said "smell ya later" so if Blue was to travel that far from Kanto i don't see how he could still be the gym leader.

On the flip side, other gym leaders have been seen in other regions. Sinnoh gym leaders were in HGSS for instance, and Jasmine in Sinnoh (and if you pay attention to backgrounds in contests, Hoenn too). Cynthia, a champion, has been in Unova too, which is significantly far away from the Japanese regions.

Heck, there's also the world tournament in Unova come to think of it. I suppose gym leaders just happen to have some down time every now and again.

    $$$

Having a decent team of a ground theme (mostly) helps too, I suppose.

So we can all just agree that the Kanto League isn't the most straight-laced of Pokémon Leagues... The Unova League (and maybe some of the others to a lesser extent) portrays Gym Leaders as figures in the community, more than just skilled professional Trainers... That would actually be something really cool to explore, the corruption in the League, except not because I really like Pokémon's easy-going idealism.

It could also be just that Giovanni forced his way into the position given the power he wielded. Blackmail, maybe?

In the Special manga, a whole bunch of the Kanto Gym leaders and even E4 members were corrupt and working for TR, on that note. So there's a canon take in that direction.

Garry / Green should be Viridian city gym leader.
Giovanni was gone so Green just replace him.
