I was using my computer this morning, and I wanted to get a new theme on Windows Vista, and I did what it says by patching the UxTheme.ddl, shscvs.dll, and themeui.dll files, and now it comes up with C:\Windows\system32\UxTheme.dll is either not suitable for Windows or contains an error.

Has anything like this happened to any of you guys before?>

    Help me ASAP!

    PLEASE

well where did you get the Patched theme DLLs?

anyway if you backed up the original UXtheme.dll then you can just delete the 'patched' one and replace the original one back in there and see if the message goes away

I did, but thing is, I try starting Windows in Safe mode with cmd.exe, but it doesn't open and it still comes up with heaps of errors, it logs in, but displays a black screen with the mouse able to move around, I press Control Alt Delete, it comes up with more errors, then I click Task Manager, and comes up more, then says Windows Task Manager is not responding, and is closing, Windows will try to find a solution..

But, yes, I DID backup the old files, they are called instead of .dll, they are .old because that is what the instructions said to do.

as for where I got it from, it was called something like UxTheme Patcher, can't remember excactly, but I found the link on Neowin.net, which lead me to a softpedia site.

The reason the UxTheme Patcher didn't work it was because is designed for Windows XP only! I recommend you try doing a system restore or using a recovery disk.

Well, it said to patch all of those three .dll files. oops is there any way to fix it?

i don't have a disk, what do i do to get into thesystem restore, i do have some restore points, but i don't know how to get into to that...

well so far you will probably have to do a restore, hopefully there's on that recent.
the best place to get the patched files is here at Within Windows, just make sure to choose your version and SP

(there is a UXtheme patch for Vista, although Vista requires the patching of 2 other files for it to properly work.)

When I did it I made a folder called DLL BU and copied the patched files over. I selected the option to rename the copied files. then I transferred the original DLLs to the BU folder then renamed the coped files with the correct names. (all of this was done after going through and giving myself the correct permissions to have full control over all 3 files)

How do I get into the system restore?

you'll need to reboot with you're install disc in and choose repair

and if the OS is an OEM..?? and I don't have the install disc..??

system CP> Backup and restore> System restore. try that if you can, otherwise see if you can borrow someone's Vista disc

Don't worry about, I'm going to ring Acer, and see if they can help me, but thank you for at least trying, I do understand that it is hard to do anything without a recovery disc.

    what is syste m CP??

Sounds like you might need to do a reinstall! Try getting a hold of a proper Vista OEM disk, it'll contain each version, and will work with the product key on the side of your machine. (I do it all the time with family laptops that I get to fix!)

Did you not make backups of each file? If so, I guess BartPE could be a possible solution too... Would allow you to boot up, and replace whatever files you screwed about with.

If you use safe mode with command prompt, enter the following into the command prompt:

    %systemroot%\system32\rstrui.exe

The same thing happened to me when I was modding my Vista o:

A System Restore fixed it right up, so try that D:

    %systemroot%\system32\rstrui.exe

    yea, well...

I do know that.. but I can't get into anything no matter which safe mode I use it doesn't get past the log on screen... so that means, no start menu, no cmd prompt, no nothing...

I have finally given up and tsken it down to the computer shop, stupid mistake cost me between $135 - $160, firstly I rund Acer, and they sent me an email with how to reset it to how it was when it came out of the box, but I thought, better not do that because I have hours of work and music and Animem and stuff, so I didn't want to lose that, but I am getting a portable HDD about 120GB, so I should be able to keep all of the important stuff on that and be able to fix everything from now on.

Thanks guys for all of your help even though it was useless.. xD
