[Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl] The shiny charm: working as intended?

Are you happy with how the shiny charm currently works in BDSP?

  • Yes, it's fine that it only affects breeding.

  • No, but it shouldn't affect the odds in the Poké Radar, only those in wild encounters.

  • No, it should affect all encounters including those in the Poké Radar

So, the shiny charm description says exactly what it always says:

A shiny charm said to increase the chance of finding a Shiny Pokémon in the wild.

But unlike always, this is not actually correct. It ONLY applies to hatching now, leaving any wild encounter outside of a Poké Radar chain at base 1/4096 odds.

Obviously, BDSP is home to a substantial number of bugs and exploits that are in the process of being patched, so it's clear ILCA will be releasing updates to fix coding oversights. With these things in mind, I ask you: do you think they are going to patch the shiny charm to work outside of breeding only? And more importantly, should the shiny charm work elsewhere?

I don't think that they're going to make changes to the shiny charm, I get the feeling that this is how they intended it to be. It should affect shiny chances for everything, it doesn't really make much sense for it not to, and really people should be given good reward(s) for doing something like completing the PokeDex.

But ever since they've been providing patches for the games (since XY), patches have for the most part been about bug/glitch/exploit fixes and vague "improves player experience" stuff. Not stuff like this.

I agree that they probably aren't going to do anything about it, given that we've had our first bugfix patches already and they have not addressed this (and given that we all know exactly how the shiny charm influences generation we know it's not a hard fix to implement) but I'm not necessarily sure it should impact Poké Radar odds. Imagine, with the shiny charm, a chain of 40. Per patch odds would be ~1 in 50, making the odds you see a shiny patch on any use of the radar at that point about 1 in 12.5

And that's if the shiny charm only provides one reroll like in Sw/Sh. If it provided two as in all other games, per patch odds would be 1 in 33 and per radar use odds would be a ridiculous 1 in 8.25. I strongly believe the radar is the reason they've made this change, given that in the best case scenario you're not far away from cute charm glitch level odds but I think gimping it to not affect any wild encounters massively reduces the appeal of the reward.

This is also the truth. It seems unlikely they would make a change which directly benefits player's odds or gameplay since there are similar RNG bugs in Sw/Sh (with the different types of shiny, and the shiny charm rerolls) that have not been addressed despite repeated patches. Conversely though, these games are at the behest of ILCA rather than Game Freak, who may care more about fixing this. Even if the shiny charm is functioning fine, the item description is blatantly wrong so I think the most likely (and probably best) solution is to just alter the item description so it's not incredibly misleading / outright false.

In just the few days with the shiny charm I caught several more wild shiny pokemon for a total of 5. Don't know if it's due to the charm, but the frequent encounters are nice.

Just got two more shiny mons: Volbeat thru breeding and wild Machoke in the underground. Shiny Machoke is pretty cool.
