The "No Evolution" Challenge
Pokémon as a franchise has a heavy emphasis on a trainer's Pokémon evolving into stronger forms. Maybe you don't always want your Pokémon to evolve. Maybe you love your small and cute Pokémon the way it is. If that's the case, have we got a challenge for you! Get your Everstone ready and have the B button on standby because in this challenge, you will be using unevolved Pokémon to complete your journey!
Randomizers are not allowed because they would require paragraphs upon paragraphs of additional rules and technicalities. Please post any randomized "no evolution" challenges in the "Travel Journals" forum.
2) In the game Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, the following middle-stage Pokemon are eligible to be caught and used despite being middle-stage Pokémon: Pidgeotto and Weepinbell. (Pidgey and Bellsprout cannot be caught in this game.) Note: This thread's ruleset is not delayed like with Coliseum, and these extra rules take effect immediately.
Users are allowed to do more than one challenge at a time, and they are allowed to drop a challenge if they wish. A single challenge can be changed into The Ultimate Run at any time as long as all rules are followed.
This has been a Spotlighted Challenge. Here's how it works.
Spotlight period: December 1st 2024 to February 28th, 2025

Core Rules
- You can only use unevolved Pokémon, and you cannot use Pokémon that cannot evolve within the game. There are some caveats to this, however.
A. Any pre-evolutions in later official games are not retroactive. This means that Pikachu is a viable Pokémon for this challenge in the original Generation 1 games but not in Generation 2 which introduced the baby Pokémon Pichu. The introduction of Pichu means that Pikachu is an evolved Pokémon from Gen II onwards. (Refer to rule 1C)
B. Any evolutions added in later official games are not retroactive. For example, Tangela has an evolved form in Tangrowth, which was introduced in Gen 4. This means that in Gen 4 onwards, Tangela is allowed, but in the first three generations, Tangela is not allowed due to the rule against Pokemon that cannot evolve.
C. Fire Red and Leaf Green, serving as faithful remakes to the original Red & Green with the Gen 3 game mechanics, do not allow players to obtain the baby Pokémon Pichu, Cleffa, and Igglybuff before seeing the credits for the first time. There is no breeding prior to the original champion fight, and there is no way to trade with the Gen 3 Hoenn games without finishing a post-game quest. As a result, Pikachu, Clefairy, and Jigglypuff are allowed for challenges in Fire Red and Leaf Green (including the post game). This also applies to games Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Pokémon Let's Go Eevee where the Pokémon Pikachu, Clefairy, and Jigglypuff are allowed.
D. Gender-locked evolutions mean that Salandit from Gen 7 and Combee from Gen 4 are allowed regardless of gender.
E. Both regional variants of Farfetch'd and both regional variants of Corsola can be used in Galar. Both regional variants of Qwilfish can be used in Hisui as well as in Scarlet & Violet with the appropriate DLC.
F. Coliseum and XD: Gale of Darkness have additional rules that grant allowances for catching middle-stage Pokémon. Please see "Additional Rules" for more information.
- The only eligible legendary Pokémon are Cosmog in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon; Poipole in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and Kubfu in Sword and Shield (with the appropriate DLC). Type: Null is too strong for this challenge and is not allowed.
- For non-battle-related purposes, such as HMs, field moves, Pickup items (eg, multiple Route 103 Zigzagoon with the ability pickup in Gen 3 Hoenn), PokéDex Completion (including items given out by Professor Oak's aides in Kanto), egg moves, in-game trades, and contests; you are allowed to catch evolved Pokémon. However, they cannot be sent into battle willingly, and if they are sent into battle unwillingly (such as the move roar in some trainer battles), the evolved Pokémon must be recalled immediately, or if they cannot be switched out, they must be allowed to faint.
- In case it's not clear, any Pokemon that can mega evolve is not allowed for Gen 6 and Gen 7 games.
- You are allowed to use Z-moves.
- In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, you are allowed to use Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon including Gigantamax Pikachu, Gigantamax Eevee, and Gigantamax Meowth.
- You are allowed to use Tera types.
Eligible Games
Official Games
- The mainline games are all allowed. These include Pokémon Red/Blue (and the Japanese Red & Green and the Japanese Blue), Yellow, Gold/Silver, Crystal, Ruby/Sapphire, Fire Red/Leaf Green, Emerald, Diamond/Pearl, Platinum, Heart Gold/Soul Silver, Black/White, Black 2/White 2, X/Y, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Sun/Moon, Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, Let's Go Pikachu/Let's Go Eevee, Sword/Shield, Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, and Scarlet/Violet.
- Pokémon Coliseum and XD Gale of Darkness(?) are allowed, but they follow different rules.
- Legends Arceus is allowed. However, for the purposes of "The Ultimate Challenge," it does not count as a Sinnoh playthrough.
Fan Games and ROM Hacks
Fan games can be allowed on a case-by-case basis. Ideally, the fan game should have you start your journey with an unevolved starter Pokémon. Any fan games you wish to challenge in this thread should follow all forum guidelines.Randomizers are not allowed because they would require paragraphs upon paragraphs of additional rules and technicalities. Please post any randomized "no evolution" challenges in the "Travel Journals" forum.
Additional Rules
- Multiple Pokémon of the same species are allowed. There is also no rule that says you cannot catch multiple Pokémon of the same species and use the one with the best stats.
- You are NOT permitted to use hacked Pokemon. You cannot use a hacked shiny Pokémon with 6 IVs and a competitive EV spread just because you have access to a cheating device. Save editors are typically for checking stats, not changing them.
- Since some games allow you use TMs multiple times and some don't, you may trade or hack in TMs under the following circumstances:
A) If the game lets you buy multiple copies of the TM, you may trade/hack in more copies once you reach the point where you would normally be able to obtain more. For instance, in Gen 3 Kanto, that means you cannot hack in Brick Break until you reach Celadon City because even though you can find one copy on the S.S. Anne, it can be purchased multiple times at the Celadon Department Store.
B) If the TM can only be purchased at the Game Corner, see No. 4 of "Additional Rules" below.
C) In Fire Red and Leaf Green, copies of TM10 for Hidden Power can be hacked immediately upon reaching Route 5. (This is because Pokémon with the ability Pickup can randomly cause the Pokémon to start holding TM10, assuming they aren't already holding anything. This cuts down on grinding wild battles with multiple Meowth in the party until TM10 is obtained.)
- You are permitted to use a save editor for the purpose of adding coins (NOT Pokémon dollars) to your coin case, so you can buy TMs, exclusive items (including the Mystic Water, Charcoal, Miracle Seed, and Magnet) and eligible Pokémon from the Game Corner in the older games. The only limitation is that you MUST receive the coin case legitimately.
- You can use a save editor to CHECK the Pokémon's IVs and specific Hidden Power.
- You are allowed to hack in extra copies of the Everstone as soon as you want.
Coliseum and XD: Gale of Darkness
1) In Pokémon Coliseum, the following middle-stage Pokemon are eligible to be caught and used: Bayleef, Croconaw, Quilava, Skiploom, Flaaffy, and Vibrava. Please note that the player can only capture one of the middle-stage Johto starters until after the credits roll. (This leniency is granted because there are only five eligible Pokémon that can be caught practically in a strict "no evolution" challenge.) Additionally, the player can catch the following unevolved Pokémon per the usual rules: Slugma, Remoraid, Makuhita, Meditite, and Swablu. Since the player starts with Espeon and Umbreon, this thread's rules start when two eligible Pokémon (including one of the unevolved Johto starters) are caught. Remember: There are no wild Pokémon encounters in Pokémon Coliseum. You catch Shadow Pokémon during trainer battles in this game.2) In the game Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, the following middle-stage Pokemon are eligible to be caught and used despite being middle-stage Pokémon: Pidgeotto and Weepinbell. (Pidgey and Bellsprout cannot be caught in this game.) Note: This thread's ruleset is not delayed like with Coliseum, and these extra rules take effect immediately.
End Points
In official games, the challenge ends when the player sees the credits for the first time. They are allowed to continue their journey with these rules as they wish (eg, traveling through Kanto in GSC and HGSS, continuing through the Sevii Islands and the Elite Four Round Two in FRLG, etc.) if they wish, but this is not required to be added to the challenge's "Hall of Fame."The Ultimate Run
In The Ultimate Run, players complete a challenge in each region of the main series. These regions include Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, and Alola. (The Galar, Hisui, and Paldea games are optional because we understand not everyone can afford to purchase all these games and a Nintendo Switch system. Players can challenge them in "The Ultimate Run" if they wish, but they are not required to.) Please note you only need one game per region. Challengers do not have to play through a region twice, and they are not expected to do Kanto multiples times (eg, one version of Kanto from Gen 1 or Gen 3 or Gen 7 will suffice). However, the Gen 2 and Gen 4 games do not count as a Kanto playthrough for this purpose. Either version of Unova (BW and B2W2) will count towards The Ultimate Run.Sign Up
Once you've read the rules, sign up with this format to be added to the list of challengers.

Additional Resources
Websites like Bulbapedia and Serebii have a plethora of resources available to aide you in your challenges. It's a good idea to learn to navigate these sites for Pokémon availability by game, version, route, etc.; Pokémon movesets and learnsets; required HM field moves; Pokémon base stats; etc. I cannot stress enough how much I've learned from browsing Bulbapedia.
