Here we go kids, a story and plea of help involving my affilation with the move Heat Wave.

So, I check Serebii to see just who exactly learns this move in R/S/E which I had yet to find. It shows only one Pokemon learning it naturally - Torkoal. Infuriated to learn such a bad Pokemon is the only one who learns it (besides Moltres, which I obviously do not have, and Charizard, which I also don't have, thanks to losing my FR version some years ago), I later see that one of my favorite Pokemon, Ninetales, learns this move through breeding. Yayyyyyy! Exciting, isn't it? xD

Anyway, so I catch two Vulpix in my Sapphire version, and breed them. It's not like I can actually breed a Ninetales or anything, with the lack of Fire Stones. Ok, so after breeding them, I get myself a nice, Lv. 5 male Vulpix. Trading it to my Ruby version, he's now a part of my permanent team, and I level him up nearly 70 levels all the way to level 72 (this all through the course of the game, obviously, not all at once). Well, after going that far, I realize that he still hasn't learned the one move I bred him to learn; Heat Wave. I can't imagne that he'd learn it at any higher levels, so I since quit in frustration. Now, starting over a new game in my Ruby version (which I have posted my short process in the travel journal thread), I'm determined to find out what I did wrong in Ninetales not learning the move ever. Some are determined to discover new planets, forms of energy, that kind of stuff. Not me! I'm determined how to make a Ninetales learn Heat Wave. =P

Anyways, here's where you come in. As determined as I am, I can't figure out why he doesn't learn the move. Yeah, it's sad. xD So I was wondering, if any of you knew just exactly what to do, and if you do, could shed some light on this poor soul here with a speech longer than a politicians biography. Anyone care to help?

...and also, sorry for the extreme lenghty story and everything. Hey, I'm making up for lost time, after many months of absence and lurking. So, yeah. =P

Egg moves are only passed on from a father that knows the move.
So you would need a Male Torkoal and Female Ninetails/Vulpix.
So that means I have to raise a Torkoal all the way up to Lv. 46? Boo.

Well, actually though, on my last team in Sapphire, I managed to raise a Magcargo up to Lv. 50 (don't ask, just don't ask), and that was one of the worst Pokemon I've ever used. Compared to Magcargo, Torkoal can't be that bad. =P

(scroll down all the way to the bottom)
Breed growlithe/arcanine with vulpix/ninetales to get the egg move, heat wave.
That wouldn't be possible for me. I lost my FR version while moving a couple years back (never bought LG for some reason, but I think I probably should), so I can't get a Growlithe/Arcanine, because they don't appear anywhere in R/S/E (which stinks, given the overall lack of Fire Pokemon in those games).

and its doesn't 'learn' heat wave, it hatches with it already in its moveset
So Vulpix should already know Heat Wave by time it hatches from the egg? Cool.

Hehe, thanks for the help guys. I can't believe I never figured this out for myself before. xD

Nice story that you've shared with us.

I used to be in your shoes before when I played on my Ruby. I always wanted certain moves on a Pokemon and it was hard to figure out how to breed this and that in order to get the move.

    Good luck with Heat Wave!
