The future of the move Tera Blast

Tera Blast is a move that can only work with the Generation IX gimmick, as it changes type based on the Tera Type of the Pokémon using the move. However, the Tera Type gimmick is not likely to exist anymore after Generation IX. With that being said, how do you think Game Freak would handle Tera Blast? Would they change its effect? It would be added to the long list of moves that are currently unused on the Nintendo Switch games? Would it still exist but just deal Normal-type damage with no effect whatsoever? If they do change its effect, what do you think it would be in future games?

I wouldn't mind terastalization staying with the game. They could probably ditch the hats, but I love the flexibility you get from the mechanic, and so many unused Pokémon have found a home in the game again. They have Unown in PLA, so maybe they will have Hidden Power be based off of tera type and go forward in that way instead.

Expects it to become unusable. Makes more sense to create a new move, if they want something different from the original.

Do you think it's a waste to have all these unusable moves?

Not really. Trimmed a lot of weak moves like Spike Cannon, Razor Wind, Water/Mud Sport, Psywave, and so on. Increased clutter without much value.

Besides, how would you change an 80 power attack using your best stat without invalidating current moves, becoming an even stronger Hidden Power, or turning into a functionally different move? Views expending your one Terastallization as part of the move's cost, in a sense.

I'm thinking the effect can change slightly to become something similar to Hidden Power, but instead of using IVs to determine type, there could just be a Tera Blast TM for every possible type.

I believe Gigantimax shows up in HOME when you have uploaded a Pokémon with it, so I assume Tera typing will carry over in the HOME code as well, so Tera Blast could easily stick around as-is. We might lose the funny hats in new gens, but it's easy to just leave the checkmark of tera type in the Pokémon's code.

The problem with that is even if Tera Types could still exist in the code, if the next generation lacks Terastallization, then there wouldn't be any way to use it, or change the Tera Type that you want. It wouldn't make sense for the next gen to have Tera Shards, unless there is some way to change Tera Type in the game, which seems like a hassle.

Sounds way too strong and kind of boring. Ran Hidden Power when it was 60 power and only Special. Does it really need a 20 power buff and usable with physical attackers too? Essentially gives every Pokemon X-Scissor, Power Gem, Drill Peck, Dragon Claw, Seed Bomb, and so on of their offense type. (Technically things like Iron Head, Waterfall, Shadow Ball, Poison Jab, and more without their secondary effect, also.) Applies to your whole team now too, not just the one you choose to Terastallize.

Also prefers attacks with some identity rather than Tera Blast (Bug) and Tera Blast (Rock). Dings Hidden Power for that as well.

Edit: Perhaps tie Tera Blast's type to a held item? Incurs a cost by sacrificing the held item slot. "Fire Tera Shard: Grants same-type attack bonus to Fire moves. Changes Tera Blast to Fire-type."

Yeah, you're right. That's very op when I think about it and I mean very op.

That's actually a much better idea. I like it!

You would be able to use Tera Blast with that code, which is what you were discussing.

What I meant was you have to be Terastallizd for Tera Blast to actually change its type. You can still use it, I know, but it would still be Normal-type unless Terastallized. I'm assuming you mean that it could just change its typing based on the Tera Type in the code without having to Terastallize. That sounds pretty good. I was just thinking about how that would work in a new game where Terastallization doesn't exist. You would have to find somewhere or something in the new game that allows you to change the Tera Type. That would be rather interesting to say the least.

It's a move created specifically for one regional mechanic, like Z/Max/G-Max moves. Unless future games keep Terastallization there's no reason for Tera Blast to continue existing.

No point in changing its effect so it works without the Terastal mechanic just for the sake of keeping it. If they need a similar move to work with another mechanic they'd normally just create a new move.

It'll likely not be in games where Terastilizing is not possible. At least, that's what I think. Feels like it'd be pointless if it were in, say, a theoretical Unova remake because there's no way there will be Tera Pokemon in those games.

So, they'll be in the unusable move list and probably have to be removed if a Pokemon has it and is transferred to the next game.
