The Correct Spelling of Jessie?

    Okay, since Jessie is an anime character, I figured this thread belonged in this subforum. Correct me if I'm wrong. ^_^

    I've always spelled Jessie with the ending '-ie', as you can see, but everywhere I head I see people spelling her name 'Jesse'.
    Now, I know that in America predominantly, Jessie is spelt with just an 'e', but as far as I know, the official spelling of Jessie is... Well, Jessie.

    Forgive me if I'm wrong, but it was the spelling in all the Pokemon guides and information books as well as in the Pokemon Yellow game in which she and James appeared. It's also how her name is spelt on Bulbapedia.

    Surely it's not that hard just to add in an 'i' in order to spell a character's name correctly, even if the local spelling of that particular name differs?


    So, posters, do you spell Jessie's name the official way or without the 'i'? If you don't spell it with an 'i', why not, and will you from now on?

    ...I realise this just seems like a rant thread, and I'm sorry. I don't mean it to, you know... I just want people to realise that they're spelling a character's name wrong and was wondering why. If staff don't think it's good enough to warrant a thread, then just close it or delete it or whatever. =3

    That's what I thought; an American show I like to watch has a male character called Jesse and that's where I first heard the male name. I assumed it was only used for males, and that women were called Jessie... I guess I was wrong, huh? XD

    well, these days, you can name your kid asdfd for all teh people care, except in France.
    so i guessit just depends on the mom and dad who name their kids.
    personally i think Jesse is a really cool name for a boy. i don't like jessie however, because it reminds me of this really snobby girl i know...
     
    That's true. Names are getting weirder and weirder. I personally like the name Jessie; it looks like a cute name and reminds me of a friendly cousin of mine. ^_^
    I prefer it with the -ie ending to just -e.

    The only time I ever spelled Jessie like Jesse, was when I wasn't sure the way to spell it and was alternating between the two. xD I know how to spell it now, and don't worry, it bugs me too when I see people spelling it like "Jesse".

    Reason being is this:

    Jessie and James' names were based on the famous 'cowboy' (as a nicer term) named Jesse James. Same as 'Butch Cassidy' who was also a cowboy of sorts.. both lived back in the old western days. XD

    Anyhoo.. while his name was Jesse James, 'Jesse' is the male spelling of the name. While 'Jessie is the female way to spell it. That's probably why they spell her name with 'ie' instead of just an 'e', regardless of the origin.

    That would be my take, as well. Interestingly, whenever Kids WB captioned the Season 1 fare, it was "-e." However, Season 2 and onward, it would be the "-ie." Either way, both are acceptable. I don't think NOA/4Kids counted on Jessie's popularity, as the name still endures. Not game canon dub, it could have been changed, if they really wanted to. Just saying.
     
    Lets not forget the show comes from japan. Where anime is prenounced [anee-may] and manga is pronounced [mon-guh]. Bu even then, the names would be in japan, so it had to be the translators fault. Aparently english translators are genderless and cant tell how to spell a name to match genders.
     
    It's spelled Jessie, plain and simple. Jesse is the male version of Jessie.

    Errr. . What does Japan have to do with Jessie? If we were talking about the name Musashi, then I could understand. But we're not.​
