"Tentacool & Tentacruel" Episode Discussion

    Here is where you can discuss the sea's uprising of the tourist industry in "Tentacool & Tentacruel."

    My review to come forthwith.
     
    A good episode. Plot - some person wants to build a hotel, however, this hotel gets in the way of a Pokemon's habitat and if you can get rid of the Pokemon messing up the plans, the developer will give a reward - anyone reminded of Dig Those Diglett? I know that comes after but I just wanted to say - EXACT same storyline, except the Diglett episode gets Gary.

    Yup, a good episode, Meowth gets to translate for the Tentacruel which is cool, some buildings get destroyed which doesn't happen much (when animals have random powers, you would expect tis from time to time...)

    Oh, and isn't this banned in the US? XD
     
    Yay! Giant Tentacruel attacking a city is an all-time epic momment. I really enjoyed this episode. I really hope they don't make a remake of this one.

    Edit: I think it was banned like "The Tower of Terror" but was unbanned, like "The Tower of Terror". Possibly because of 9/11, just like "Homer vs The City of New York".
     
    I really didn't like the old lady with the tanks.
    Wasn't sure why Tentacruel was giant-
    Not sure if it was Banned in Canada in addition to US.
    Overall likely one of the more memorable episodes.
     
    I was right about the reason the episode was banned... cool.

    Besides the usual paint-for-words-on-signs-edits, it seems alright. I guess 4Kids didn't mess with it too much.

    Tentacruel: The Gangster of the Sea
     
    The eco-lesson aside, I believe this is the first time man-raised Pokemon fought against untamed (i.e., non-captured) Pokemon. It makes for an interesting philosophy debate, not to mention how the giant Tentacruel actually listened to Misty's imploring. It's akin to the debates set up in "Island of Giant Pokemon," with Ekans' contention of Pokemon doing wrong because of their Trainers.

    Ironic, since "Beauty & the Beach" wasn't as deep by comparison. Oh, well, we needed the breather, anyway.

    Speaking of Beauty and the Beach, even though the references were cut from this episodes, her cousin Brutella still appeared (even rebuilding her restaurant, not to mention) in the Dubbed version, not to mention a flashback to Beauty and the beach was left as is in a later episode, Hypno's Naptime.

    Which will make for some fun future irony, once we get there. At least, 4Kids split the difference with the cousins' name -- both have the same name in the Japanese version. How... confusing, lazy and/or amusing? You make the call!
     
    I liked the Porta Vista Arc. Both Beauty and the Beach and Tentacool and Tentacruel were great episodes. I really like how real world problems were portrayed in them, namely corporate and personal greed. Nastina and Brutella were great villians. They should have come back to harass the group some more with some massive corporate plot. Misty was amazing and brave in this episode and we meet her short lived Horsea (should be a kingdra by now).

    well, technically they weren't named in the Japanese version, they were known as "Hags", which is a descriptive word/insult rather than an ACTUAL name, but yeah, I guess you're right (plus, the scene where Jessie and James were pointing at her hair I heard was different, the original version had them mistaking her for Brutella, and the dub had them commenting on her hairstyle [claiming it to be a "disaster"].)

    EDIT: @sirboulevard: Yeah, Misty was very brave in that episode, and it's also a shame that her Horsea did get shafted (oh well, at least it had the Eevee brothers trailmaking, Snorlax kissing, defending the show, and this episode as some achievements it did in it's run.)

    Although, it's also a shame that fans claim that the only time she truly put her life at risk or did anything important was Cerulean Blues. I mean, even when I tried to lay down evidence on the table that she did far more than just that, not only do they outright reject the evidence, they also mocked me among other things. One of the worst of the bunch is this guy named "Redtye", who goes by the name of Don on BMGf, and his friend LethalCarnivine also mocks me in regards to it as well. Even IF they must disagree with my views, that didn't mean that they HAVE to insult me, my fanbase, or Misty!

    Right, I'm not as familiar with Japanese naming, as I kinda mistook that for an actual name. Oops. As for the naming scheme (twins with no name), that's kinda amusing, but it just confused me, however slightly,

    And I thought Misty/Kasumi was rather gutsy in this one, as she tried to "talk" to the Tentacruel. It was quite clear the omega-Tentacruel could have killed her quite easily, but she pulled it off. So, yeah, I was impressed with her, there.

    I was impressed as well. I was only complaining as to how several people seem to ignore that episode as well as countless others that she did stuff [not to mention important stuff](even Johto had her doing some things), and act as though the only "Brave and important thing" she did was when she jumped in front of the Tentacruel's poison stings to defend Gyarados, which was after she left the show. I mean, even WHEN I supply evidence (which on youtube, I can't explain much since the character limit for comments is ridiculously low [only 500 characters allowed.]), they ignore it and start trying to mock me and use insulting names on me.

    I can't explain the fandom, so I won't. I think you have to go where the evidence leads, and if they can't take it, that's on them. Technically, you can assert her bravado from the beginning, in her trying to face off against the Rockets in Pokemon Emergency. She lost in a humiliating way, mind you, but she still did it.

    I think "she's not brave" is ironic, when her eventual successors were nothing but girly-girls. Would people say that on them? Especially when you look at "strong and brave" they've been, compared to Misty/Kasumi. Of course, Misty's been around longer, so, yeah. Heh.

    Being a "girly-girly" has nothing to do with bravery. May was less confident and was more likely to be scared and let Ash take the lead and follow him around (what I thought after watching Avanced first time). Dawn wears different outfits and looks after her hair, but is much more likely to want to take the lead and participate and seems completly capable of looking after herself (look at the first episode and the 2nd, can't remember completly but she took on Team Rocket by herself from what I remember? With Pikachu's help, of course, I think?) she just seems like the type who would want to travel with people, not just by herself.

    I would say that Misty is brave, just not around bugs XD

    I know, but the fandom likes to make apples and oranges with these character comparisons. "My character is better!" "No, mine is!" Each has a different approach, and one can say that Hikari is the embodiment of the writers' experience with Kasumi and Haruka. Although, sometimes, you have to wonder on each one, in terms of who is overcompensating at a given instance and who isn't.

    Either way, this isn't the place for such a debate. Of course, it's a debate that won't be easily answered, as each girl has well over hundreds of episodes to draw examples from (not counting Hikari, as D/P is almost at a 100, but she'll be around for 200, at least. Especially if the series continues on and on and on).
     
    I think Dawn is a mix of May, Misty and Ash haha. She has personality traits from them all.
