Team Rocket: "To protect the world from devastation"?

    There was always one thing I never understood about Team Rocket's Jessie and James. With their original motto they started off with "Prepare for trouble and make it double." Then, Jessie would begin to say "to protect the world from devastation" and James would go "to unite all peoples within our nation." These first 2 lines do not sound like evil intentions to me. I know that there was an episode where Butch and Cassidy told Jessie and James that they were saying the motto wrong, and yet years after that, they continued to say that they wanted to "protect the world from devastation." What was the idea behind that? Was it just to show how much of a failure Jessie and James are?

    Apart from that, I'm unsure too :P

    I figured they did it because they thought they sounded cool. I mean, who is to really say they gave a crap about Team Rocket's real motto, or even that Butch of Cassidy got it right? And Jessie is kind of a hopeless romantic, so why the heck not be a little poetic about it? lol.
     
    Because it's just an EVIL FAIL!

    Plus it sounds better in 'Double Trouble'.
     
    I always sort of thought it was to show they aren't true villains. They aren't as mean and nasty as they want to think they are, they're actually good people underneath. I guess. xD The motto sort of shows that.
     
    it's a trick

    I never really understood the meaning behind the two lines about protection from devastation and "uniting all peoples" but now that I think about, they're probably said as a trick.
     
    It's probably one of those things where the baddies "save the world" by doing obviously evil things (coughnaziscough).

    Anyway, Jessie and James should work for Team Galactic with that motto.
     
    1. They're wannabes, although Jessie is the verging on bad, in that she cheats at everything, followed by Meowth, followed by James.
    2. I think it's the writers being sarcastic. Team Rocket is typical thuggish stealing, or meant to be, not all possessed with their goals like the others, so they can't believe they're protecting the world...
     
    they aren't actually evil. just steal pokemon- don't hurt them or something.... I'm guessing they made it up just for fun xD. They aren't protecting anything.
     
    Listen to Butch and Cassidy's motto. They have the right one. Jessie and James are meant to look like the idiot grunts so they get the motto wrong.

    Cassidy: Prepare for trouble
    Butch: And make it double
    Cassidy: To infect the world with devistation
    Butch: To Blight all peoples in every nation
    Cassidy: To denouce the goodness of truth and love
    Butch: To extend our wrath to the stars above
    Cassidy: Cassidy
    Butch: Butch
    Cassidy: Team rocket circling the earth both day and night
