Anime/Manga Studio Ghibli Fest 2024

Anybody on the forum going to theaters for the anual Studio Ghibli fest this year?

I went to the movies yesterday and saw The Secret World of Arietty for the first time as part of the celebration- an absolute delight of a movie. I don't know why I hadn't paid this animation attention before, but am really glad that I got the chance to correct that, and see it properly on the big screen thanks to the festival.

A little sad that I missed Castle in the Sky last month, it was just not good timing for me, but there are still plenty of masterpieces left to see. I think I will probably revisit Princess Mononoke in July next, and definitely want to watch The Tale of Princess Kaguya in November- that one is my favorite after Sprited Away.

Who else is down for some Ghibli?

Ooh I'm going there to see My Neighbor Totoro, I watched it when I was a kid and It was sooo good and heartwarming! Can't wait to check it out :3

I feel stabbed in the back. It appears that all my local theaters have dropped the Studio Ghibli movies for the upcoming week. No Pom Poko or Tale of Princess Kaguya as planned for the month's end. They were cancelled to cram in a thousand showings of Wicked, Gladiator II and Moana 2 for Thanksgiving. I have been hearing from other Ghibli fans on Reddit communities who had pre-ordered tickets to Kaguya or Pom Poko having their orders refunded. Some cities are still hosting it, but not one near me anymore.

For months I had been dreaming of seeing Kaguya on the big screen for the first time, so I could relish the breathtaking art in a way that I can't fully on my television or computer, and now my heart has broke.

I know how excited you were about the event, that really, really, sucks I'm so sorry 😢 🫂

If they have bumped it for current blockbusters then perhaps they could show the ghibli films at another time? It might be worth contacting them and asking just in case they are willing to do that.

Either way, they shouldn't have hurt so many people, especially for a quick buck. Cinemas rely heavily on repeat business, and treating their customers like that is a sure fire way to lose them in the long run.

I really hope somewhere near you will have a change of heart and show them.
