this sounds weird but, I'm in 6th grade and we are having field day, june 9, 2008, and I was wondering, since we have a tug-o-war turnoment, if any of you have any strageties on how to win, strongest in the back, weakest in the front, I am somewhere in the middle, plz help cuz i wanna win!

Everyone in your group has to tug as hard as they can at the same time. Have everybody yell 1.. 2.. PULL! 1.. 2.. PULL! Also, at my school, we usually have the strongest people at the front. O.o

Have someone either strong or really heavy as your anchor at the back, that'll be really important unless your entire team is all of similar ability. Also, get everyone to wear boots with spikes on the sole (e.g. soccer boots). That really, really helps loads with keeping people on the ground.

Oh, and keeping in time with your pulls will help too.

I like doing it the nerd way. When the other team starts pulling, have everyone on your team let go. =D

well you could always secretly tie your end to a pole or a trailer hitch of a car ;D
but yeah I think that going from front to back being strongest to waekest is the way to go.

Don't arrange your team strongest to weakest (or vice versa)

Put it so that it alternates strong, weak, strong, weak etc. This balances the overall pulling strength and is more effective.
If all the stronger pullers are together, then their effort is going into pulling from the strong person in front of them rather than the other team. Likewise a front row of weak pullers will be ineffective as they will simply be having the rope pulled from them by the strong pullers behind.

Use your arms and lean back, taking small steps. Keep a straight back and use your leg muscles ;P

Simple, have the heaviest in back. Trust me, it works. My class had the two... erm... 'massive' kids in 5th grade and we easily won with them at anchor.

hmm I bet when you are told to go, the immediate reaction from the other team will be to pull as hard as they can. You should probably try and reserve some of the strength and don't pull really really really hard all at once, then when the other team are more tired PULL REALLY REALLY REALLY HARD!

Don't know whether it would work *shrugs* as you are pulling either way but you should probably go real slow at first with only small steps and in unison while they tire.

Oh yeh try and put I don't know.. chalk or something on your hands so the rope doesn't burn as much.

    Balance the strength out...

My strategy to winning tug of war has always been to just put the biggest, scariest person on your team at the front and just have him/her give members of the other team the dirtiest looks they possibly can, hopefully being able to intimidate them into submission.

...Or you could just y'know...pull really hard on the rope. Totally your choice.

all the ideas were awsome but my team lost,(tear) lol but we came in 3rd and my friends class won 1st so it all works out but sad thing is, some guy almost passed out (tear) LOL thanks again and tomorrow is my last day of freakin school! so i will be on here more often!

it was like 104 degrees outside and he didn't drink any water so it is kinda his fault, also, a lot of the kids in the classes were FAT and I mean FAT and the kid that almost passed out was pulled on the ground and he is really athletic cuz he got the highest score for a test we take called "the pacer" in a fitness gramm thing to test you strength and crap and i can't belive i am typing this at 3 in the morning lol

I tried that in 5th grade and I had to walk all the way down the hill to get tennis shoes so it wouldn't work

well this is a better strategy i think: well it is better if you put all the fat people in the back and the strong people in the front and all the normal people in the middle:
why: because all the strong people will pull hard and if the other team pulling even harder, it will be harder because of the fat kids. so if you combine them it will be possible that your team might win

well i know that field day passed but this is a good strategy if you play tug of war next year or next time

When we had this in out school, our team did this:
We left the biggest guy in front because the first person to cross the line would make their team lose. And we pulled backwards altogether with more force.
