The couple of Spyro games that I have not played yet, are The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon for the Xbox 360, since I'm a big Xbox 360 type of fella, as well as Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. Are they worth it?
I actually had a lot of fun playing Skylanders for the 3DS. I don't know how the game is on different systems (because it's really difficult to get the game itself without having to buy the starter pack, and I already have the three figures from that). The 3DS version, though, is a really fun platformer that reminded me of the original Spyro games. Maybe not in the amount of exploration that can be done in the original games, because the levels are on a straight path, but there's some collecting to do and difficult jumps. The combat's pretty good too, and it's interesting to see all the different attacks and movement the different characters have. If you do play, you'll find your favorites.
The toy-collecting part is where the game gets annoying. If you only want certain characters (I wanted all the "dragons" from the first set) then good luck. Some only come in three-packs. Some are sold individually, but you can't find them in stores. I'm still missing Sunhawk because I just can't find her anywhere. For months, I was missing Camo but finally found him in stores...as a three pack. So now I have a double of one figure and another that I didn't want.
That's really what's holding me back from playing the rest of the series of Skylander games. I want to play them, and they look like a lot of fun, but I just don't have the room for all the figures that I might want to buy or the money.
As for the Legend of Spyro series, I found that it depends on what system you play them on. The GBA version was all right and easy enough to get through. The story of the series is probably my favorite out of all the Spyro games. But the combat is what ruins the whole experience. I played the first Legend of Spyro game on my PS2, and the charm that made me love Spyro games was lost. There was no exploration. No humor. No collecting. No
fun. By the end of the game, I was just mashing buttons to get through the combat as fast as possible, and when I finally finished the game, I was left empty. I tried to continue the series on the PS2/Gamecube, but I wasn't interested, and the games only made me miss the original trilogy. Years later, I tried the Legend of Spyro games on the GBA, and had a little bit more fun playing the games, but... The magic was gone.
The original trilogy? Well, I don't need to say much on it that hasn't already been said. Those games are simply pure fun to play. My favorite is Year of the Dragon for how much there is to do in that game with the four different characters. Plus all the other features that they added, like skateboarding!
