I will be restarting the game and posting the differences. I don't know Japanese except that I can read hinagara. Read meaning I can pronounce it. Defining what those sounds mean is somewhat different. If you want to know what things say I can translate from hinagara to romanji and leave it to you guys to translate. Anyways. I will leave this as a walkthrough and just edit this post when Updates are made.

Cartridge Appearance: Grey cartrage with "Nintendo gameboy" on the top. Imprented on the green sticker is the code 20A. It has a copyright date of 1995 for gamefreak, creatures inc, and nindendo. Says in english Made in Japan. Top right corner of sticker says DMG-APBJ-JPN. The center has a pic of the always lovely Venusaur on it with the words Pocket Monster Trainer around it and then Katakana words which i cannot read in purple and then the words tiny Pocket monsters in gold under allthat just above the copyright dates.

Upon starting up the game. You get the same as the US R/B start up. Same battle and the same thing with the trainer and pokemon sprites switching in and out. That screen has Katakana (i cant read that) as a start up and then underneath Pocket Monsters and under that Green Version. on the bottom it is copyrighted to Game Freak Inc. The copyright year is 1995.

Also In this post I would like to make an FAQ dispelling rumors and confirming facts about the game. These include Lavender Town Syndrome, the ability to catch all 151 pokemon on one cartridge, and any questions you guys have.

Also guys. Id like to make a list of differences between green and the US versions R/B.

There's supposedly a glitch involving the Name-Rater that can turn a Magikarp into Mew. It would be nice to have this rumor confirmed or proven false for my site.

I still havent gotten around to restarting the game and Im IN lavender town right now. I can definately get my hands on a magikarp and a mew.

Ive been too busy to restart the safe state due to my japanese class and homework taking up all of my day.

It's cool that you got Green and all, I'm even a little jealous, but really all the testing needed can be and probably has been done on ROMs. I'm positive someone already debunked the 151 rumour.
On the very very other hand, I had no idea the Japanese carts were grey :O That's pretty nice to know. Did you get this off of eBay or something? May I ask how much it cost you?

Ebay yes, there were like 10 fake versions 0.0 It took a lot of research to verify that the sprites were correct the and the version was authentic. Which is basically all Ive established now.

I do know that it can all be accomplished with roms, but to be accurate you need an untranslated rom. Pokemon had to be TOTALLY recoded into english because of the fragile code so any translated roms are no good for authentic tests.

I need to know what I am working with WILL be exactly the same as the cartridge game, so I just decided, its only $8, $12 including shipping, why not buy it.

Yes from Ebay, and yes it shipped from Japan. I prefer to buy japanese games from japanese sellers. But currently I only own 3 japanese games total, the other two being Sega Saturn games. (spine cards are <3 )

The original red and green were in grey cartrages I am assuming however when the mail only blue was released I've read it had a blue cartrige and also The 2nd release (with the USA sprites) of red might have been red.

Pokemon blue being a mail order only, will be the REAL gem of my videogame collection when I can find it. (Move over Shining The Holy Ark and Mr. Bones)

That's true, though many of the "Green" ROMs available online aren't actually Green version ROMs at all. While the rumor is most certainly debunked, that does not preclude the ultimate final say playing the actual cartridge would have.

Lavender Town should be perfect, as that's where the glitch is performed. While I'm sure the code is more specific (I believe I've seen a more detailed variation), the original "glitch" was spread as a rumor circa the PokeGod phenomenon. The steps are as follows:

"To get Mew, go to Shion Town and ask the nickname changer to change your Koiking's nickname to Mew. Go into your tools, go down to the 13th tool and click SELECT at least 8 times. Now ask the nickname changer to change the Koiking's nickname again. The monster will blink, the changer won't do it and you have Mew!"

That sounds very fake. But I suppose a conclusive test could never hurt. (I can think of about 5 different ways testing glitches can hurt. 0.0)

Also, Tangent about Shion.

The japanese character *draws wierd l shape* Shi. Can be translated as graveyard or 4. It is interesting to remark that it is around that time you get your 4th gym badge and that there is a graveyard in town. My translation of Shion would probabily be "Graveyard Town". It is also why some hotels in Japan do not have room 4.

The information I got about shi came from my current Japanese Sensei.

Another interesting refrence is Mr. Fuji. Mr Fuji in japan would be Fuji-san. Which is also a way of saying Mount Fuji because the chinese pronounciation (on'yomi) of the word mountain is san, and because it is made up of more then one kanji mixed with hiragana the on'yomi reading is used to say Mt. Fuji. Thus both Mr. Fuji and Mt. Fuji can be pronounced the same way. Its a pun guys.

It could very well be fake, but the fact it was originally written with Japanese names (suggesting it was transcribed before Red and Blue were even released in America) and is presented as a glitch rather than a "code" leads me to believe it's possible.

I should note that the variation I mentioned with further details indicated that the "Mew" would not actually be the 151 Pokemon, but rather a Magikarp with glitched information (the 13th slot is similar to the MissingNo. code, which makes this even likelier). A warning, this glitched "Mew" was also said to be able to crash the game.

I found a level 17 koikingu. And I'm looking up its hinagara name.

And it doesnt. It mergest the sprite of the name changer WITH the sprite of your Koikingu. It then promptly freezes your game.

It changed my pokemon to like level 178 (remember it was 17)

The music remains the same the whole time. I cant do anything.

I'll do more testings.

I can go into it with start but its... abnormal. ID number 000 HP 81/51 It knows four moves

but really its just the two moves repeated with different pp amounts...

I checked the stats of a second pokemon and im left with just the room. Hovering there

Interesting. Keep trying at it and maybe we'll get an interesting result. I did find a variation of the glitch, if you want to try it:

"1.)Take a Magikarp to the name rater and change its name to Mew. He won't let you.
2.)Go to your items and press Select on your eighteenth item thirteen times.
3.)Talk to the name rater again, this time he will let you change the Magikarp's name to mew. It will then turn into Mew."

That 2nd variation sadly enough is impossible because he WILL let me change the name to mew. In katakana, not hiragana. I can try to switch to attempting to do it in hinagara and stuff like that.

I have the original Japanese Green, too.

I wonder why people always refer to is as Green by itself, after all, there's a Japanese Red version that's identical to Pokemon Green except with different Pokemon.

Here's a list of differences that I'll name right off the spot:
*The tiles are different. Here's Pokemon Red & Green, and here's Pokemon Red & Blue.
*The sprites are different. I like these sprites better, since it's what they "originally" looked like. Charmander used to have horns on it's back! And Charizard had super-epic looking wings!
*The sound effect when you save is different.
*The textboxes don't have Poke Balls on the edges.
*Cerulean Cave has a completely different layout.

Also, not many people understand what the original Pokemon games were, but in Japan, Pokemon Yellow is NOT the 3rd version. It's just a spinoff. In Japan, Pokemon Red & Green came first, and the 3rd version was Pokemon Blue. The reason why the graphics are different from the Japanese and US versions, is because the US versions were translated off of Pokemon Blue. Ever wonder why Cerulean Cave's layout in FR/LG is different from the layout in Red/Blue? That's because Cerulean Cave in FR/LG is based off of the original Red/Green.

Also, ever wonder why Gold/Silver don't have Poke Balls on the text boxes, and the Save sound effect is different from Red/Blue? Because production on Gold/Silver began right after Red/Green were released, and Blue and Yellow were just side projects they worked on to give them more time.

I refer to green by itself in this post because. Its all I own 0.0 No other reason. But yeah.

I never noticed these minor changes like no pokeballs in gold or silver.

I can take pictures however, helariously enough. It will be DSi quality. (Irony of a ds taking pictures of a gameboy? see it? no?... bah im just easily amused)

I personally dont like some of the green red sprites. Charmanders face is more rounded out, for example, but the pikachu from Green/red is way cooler then the pikachu from my first version (red US).

I'm sad. because I just now saw this thread and since you are past Lavender Town I'm sure you won't be able to test it now.

I hear that after fiighting everybody on the S.S. Anne, right before you leave, go back into the "Dining Hall" and you will see a man dressed up as a mouse/cat (hard to tell what really...) who will battle you. But I'm not sure myself.

Because it's simpler and quicker to say "Green version" because there is no American version of Green (aside from LeafGreen, of course, but everyone says "LeafGreen" for that game anyways) while there is an American Red. When people say "Green version" it's meant to indicate both Japanese Red and Green, so it's pretty much just a catch-all term. Though there are some people that don't realize that Japanese Red is any different from American Red and assume that Green version was the only "Japanese" version.

What. Who told you that? That's entirely untrue. While there's no doubt that Japanese Blue is more rare than either Japanese Red and Green, there are certainly more differences between the Japanese Red and Green versions and the American Red and Blue versions.

Ok guys. I have a presentation to make tomorrow for japanese class so I dont know how much playing I will be getting in today.

Also, I have been searching for japanese blue because well honestly I need red, and blue (and several more) for my collection.

ChrisTom, actually I do plan to restart. Just testing out things late game right now. I can try to get back to you on this one. Also I can't "read" Japanese. I can take hinagara and turn it into romanji. 0.0 I can speak what I am reading but I often have NO IDEA what it means. Yes guys. I officially fail. <3

Someday I WILL be able to read japanese simply because I want to. If i want to, i will study hard and eventually I will learn.

Which would be nice because theres this nifty game for the sega saturn thats Japanese only and Id actually like to know whats going on when I play.
