So, I don't want my Vigoroth to evolve to a slaking.

So, as you know, during the course of a Pokémon's development, under certain circumstances specific to that Pokémon's species, it may evolve into a different Pokémon. This change is not merely physical, however, as Pokémon of a higher evolutionary stage have different (and usually more powerful) base stats than their predecessors, may have different moves that can be learned, and sometimes change their types though usually at least one of the types of the previous form is preserved.

But, do you know of a pokemon that didn't need an evolution? Art, stat, or various wise?

Like for me, I didn't really think that Vigoroth needed an evolution to Slaking, because Slaking kept its Traunt ability from when it was a Slakoth, and, I prefer Vital Spirit over Traunt, to be honest.

The most egregious example would probably have to be Porygon2 to Porygon-Z. Hell, Porygon itself has stats on par with a below-average one-stage pokemon frome GenI, and Porygon2 made it more competitive by bringing it to the higher end stats, but Porygon-Z comes and falls just a hair short of other nonlegendary powerhouses like Arcanine, Gyarados, and Snorlax. XD

Also of note is Scyther, who shares the same Base Stat Total as Gengar, Heracross, Bonzong, and Scizor. That's right, GameFreak gave the most powerful bug from GenI a new evolution in GenII, but all its stat gains are lateral (trading 40 points of SPD for 20 points each of ATK and DEF) XD

I really hate how we kind of have to "choose" between Vigoroth and Slaking. Vigoroth is more active pertaining to turns compared to Slaking, but the Base Stat Total difference is SO much... And Slaking's Attack is enticing as well... T_T

Also, I'm a bit saddened over Scyther receiving an evolution. Very high Base Stat Total, and the only change is the distribution of 40 points out of 500. I'm considering raising a Scyther ALONGSIDE a Scizor, solely due to the fact that Scyther's BST equals that of its evolution, a feat which only Scyther has managed to achieve. I get Scizor's more "modern/evolved/compact" scissor hands, but Scyther's green coloration, differently spiked-shaped head, and HUGE CLEAVING SCYTHES just take the cake. BOTH of their designs are freaking awesome, though..

    Rhydon.

I !@#$%^&* hate Rhyperior, it looks but ugly, and I think rhyhorn needed a baby rather then an evo (I mean, for basic standards, Rhyhorn's already huge.)
It looks like a ball, with littles legs, an ugly head and oversized arms.

I also think Magnezone ruined the purpose of Magneton. It's main body just is too fat.

Uhm... That's about it I guess.

Increase of 10 Base Speed and 80 Attack. 20 More Defense, 40 more Special Attack, and 10 more Special Defense. Oh, and 70 more HP.

Truant sucks, but the benefits of evolving are still immense.

Guy Above said it, But I will bring some of it anyway

Magnemite has is my favorite electric type pokemon since generation. it's evolution, Magneton, many may called uncreative but it look awesome and rightly executed for that time in those old generation.

But then, something horrifying ruin it all....

I mean, why must UFO? well, I can came up with something better for Magneton evolution but turning the trio magnet into an UFO is just wrong. For me atleast.

And last is Magmotar and Magmar

Magmar is good, but why must they turn it hands into cannon? that just didn't make any sense to me since magmar is much more like a physical fighter. Cannon hands feel out of place for pokemon. Same thing goes the for Rhyperior

Electivire jumps to mind for me - I love Electabuzz but see nothing appealing whatsoever about Electivire.

I really don't want to evolve my Tynamo into an Eelektrik or an Eelektross, as it's going to become sooooooo slow! I'm in the process of EV training the crap out of its Speed, but just know it's going to fall dramatically upon evolution. Sigh...

Well, some people prefer Grovyle to it's evolution, Sceptile. I sorta agree with them- I prefer Grovyle's design over Sceptile's. And, if combined with an Eviolite, it could prove devastating in battle.

Some others are completely understandable: Slaking's Truant abilty completely ruins it. MASSIVE ATTACK DOES NOT COMPENSATE FOR ONLY MOVING ONCE EVERY TWO TURNS. Period. You can knock it out on one turn, let alone the free one you get after it attacks you. :\ Vigoroth wins.

And what about the huge attack stat Trapinch has? You lose more than half of it upon evolution, and only hope to get most of it back upon the next evolution. :\

Rhyperior seemed like a bit of an unnecessary evolution to me because I had always thought that Rhydon was cool enough on its own. Why bother adding an evolution instead of leaving well enough alone?

Also, it still baffles me why Pokemon like Lickitung, Tangela, and Dusclops needed evolutions. I mean seriously, Lickilicky and Dusknoir? They gave irrelevant Pokemon (I'm mainly looking at Lickitung here) irrelevant and unneeded evolutions that just made me like those lines even less than I did. And I really, really hated Tangrowth's design with a passion. :/

Note how all these Pokemon are from Sinnoh... I'm not even gonna get into that because that's a whole other rant, haha.

It is a bad ability... but I would say that would only alter its role. Say in double battles if you can negate its ability, suddenly you have a powerhouse with no drawback in your hands bar one move using something like worry seed. As for singles, one would simply use it as a hit-and-run Pokemon - choice band/scarf and moves like Earthquake and Return and then switching into something else so you use it again later is a valid tactic for it, or so I've heard (I am not much into competitive battling).

Its a vaild tactic, but see, whenever I run into say, a stall team, moves like Substitute and Protect are pretty common in competitive battiling, which players can easily protect themselves during turns where slaking would attack, and have at least one free set-up when its...loafing around, so, that's why I wouldn't say Slaking is my favourite hit-and-runner. It can work great in double battles though; from what I've heard you can skill swamp its ability.

I quite like Pokemon that are considered better than their fully evolved counterparts. Pikachu (if it didn't get its horrible anime/manga bashing), Porygon2, arguably Clamperl and Golbat can be great! (Golbat with evolite of course...)

I wouldn't be able to stand Slaking, unless you could do some gimmicky Pseudo-Mummy passing to it.

    Now that people mention it...:

-I always thought Rhydon stood well on its own (well, being the first Pokemon ever created, that's a pretty good design that's held up over the years)...I dislike Rhyperior's weird-looking tail, and parts of Rhyperior's design look overdone for such a heavyset Pokemon. I guess its OK in the long run, though...
At least Rhyperior gets Rock Wrecker, which could possibly be due to Rhydon's distinction of being the first-ever Pokemon designed...aside from starter Pokemon and the legendary Pokemon Dialga, Rhyperior is the only Pokemon that receives its own Hyper Beam variant...

-Lickilicky seems unnecessary for Lickitung, but I've grown to tolerate it...

-Magnezone seems somehwat forced... Magneton had the right amount of "bulk", but Magnezone just comes in and goes "LOL I R UFO" for the heck of it...Again, I've grown to tolerate Magnezone as well.

-I used to loathe Probopass, but I've managed to tolerate it. Barely. Nosepass looked unique in itself during Generation 3, and Probopass ruined the design by adding... weird mustache hair, googly eyes, and a strange helmet. And it became a bit too angular...

-Aipom looks very cute. Ambipom tarnished the design a bit with its funky antennae and massively different tail arms....

But yeah, I've grown to tolerate most Generation 4 evolutions of past-Generation Pokemon. And this does not mean that I "hate the Pokemon designs at first, but come to get used to them/love them later on"; it's just that I've grown to tolerate these specific designs... Even after all this time, I still harbor a very tiny amount of dislike for these designs, as several of them seem like they could have been done much better to do justice to all of those past-Generation Pokemon... :\

I agree with you on the whole Vigoroth thing.

Another that I can think of is Magneton, Rhydon, Togetic, Magmar, and Electabuzz. (Pretty much all the pokemon that got a pointless evolution in generation 4.) (Sinnoh.)

Tbh most of the Pokemon that ended up getting evolutions I didn't really not agree with. I do think that some of the designs for the evolutions had flaws (like um what is up with Rhyperior's head) but for the most part I like most of the evolutions they introduced. Probopass was probably the worst evolution added imo, though. Way to be bad and no one likes mustaches anyway. :(
