SMD: Getting the gender you want for your starter and partner

It seems no matter what answers I give during the quiz I always end up with a male starter and a female partner. Is there any means of choosing the gender for both you and your partner Pokemon? I've read online that selecting "cute" or "cool" as an answer to the final question determines the gender of your partner but I seem to get a female partner and male starter regardless of what answer I choose. Selecting the Pokemon I want manually doesn't change the gender either.

Why do I even care? Well despite the visual differences between certain Pokemon depending on gender I'm also a bit OCD when it comes to roleplaying in Mystery Dungeon games, so having a male Fennekin as a starter for example takes me out of the immersion a bit.

While I'm at it. Does anyone know of a guide that shows which answers lead to which Pokemon?

I didn't even know the starters and partners had genders in this game. Unless I wasn't paying attention, I don't remember any of them being referred to by any gender specific pronouns.

What makes you think they're male or female? Yes, the cute/cool option should equate to female/male (if it's the same as Animal Crossing), but I don't believe there were any indications of gender in the story at all. I have the U.S. version though, so it may be different in other versions.

Also, you can disregard what the quiz gives you and just choose whoever you want you and your partner to be. When you do that, it'll give you the cool/cute question again. That's what I did.

Certain Pokemon have different designs depending on their genders. Some differences can be very minor but they're noticeable if you're already aware of what those differences are. The male and female versions of Pikachu have slightly different tail designs. A female Venusaur's flower will have a seed in it. There are other examples but I can't be bothered listing them all.

From what I've read elsewhere since making this thread it does seem there were some localization changes made for certain releases. Apparently all games sold in my region have preset genders for both the starter and partner Pokemon. Not sure why that was changed but a user on another site suggested it might be because they didn't want anyone getting offended over the "cute = girl, cool = boy" thing. Guess I'll just have to accept the fact that my Fennekin is cis male scum. Just kidding, I know it's not a big deal. Now that I know it's out of my control I'll go back to enjoying this wonderful game.

I didn't think that they made two different models for the gender dimorphisms in this game though. At least, I don't recall seeing any.

But I didn't know about the preset gender thing. How is it indicated that your fennekin is a male? I'm curious since we don't have the gender symbols in our version.

Well they did. I didn't catch onto it for a while either to be honest but you can see the differences in the dungeons and in the overworld.

Oh I didn't actually choose Fennekin that was just a joke lol. As far as I know gender isn't implied by dialogue, although someone on reddit did claim there were minor dialogue changes made for certain releases. Whether this is true and what those changes are I do not know. There aren't gender symbols in my version either but what I learnt after recruiting two Venusaurs (neither of them were my starter or partner) is that when you recruit two of the same Pokemon you can determine the gender by going into your menu, selecting status then seeing whether the Pokemon's icon is facing left or right. If it's facing left it should be male, if it's facing right it should be female. This should only apply to starters, partners and Pokemon that you've recruited more than one of though. Otherwise I'm pretty sure all Pokemon will face towards the left regardless of gender.

Oh I see. I did notice the facing left/right thing, but I guess I haven't been paying close enough attention to the actual models to spot the differences! :P Interesting tidbit!
