We have all--well, at least most of us--have played shooter games before, whether it be Battlefield, Call of Duty, Halo, or something else. Of them all, which series would you call your most favorite and why? Which one is your least favorite? Do you like online, or local? If it's former, how good would you say you are? What are some things that you like about online play, and what things do you dislike?

    Doom and Quake

The classics. Everything else, especially Halo, pales in comparison.

FPS games... Not really into them anymore since they got linear as hell and more often the not, Multiplayer-focused. Which is a true shame. The last good FPS imo was Wolfenstein: The New Order, but even that game was linear. Sure it had some large area's with exploring in it, but the design was still linear. There was only one way you can go. Same for Bioshock: Infinite, another game without MP. FPS games rely now completely on Multiplayer and forget what made them so good in the first place with the old FPS games. Some people see this as "the" evolution of FPS, but to me, it feels more like a devolution. Sure instead of SP it is not MP focused, but what about the people who aren't even able to play the MP-modes? Those people are screwed with a terrible and linear story and that is sad. The only game I feel like that balanced both properly was the Borderlands series and even then the MP was limited to just co-op play. However the game didn't feel linear at all, there were multiple routes to choose from and it made it enjoyable.

My ultimate prediction: only buy a FPS if you only care about the multiplayer aspect. People with bad internet should avoid this genre at all costs if they do not want to end up wasting a ton of money for a terrible and linear story...

    Such a shame.

I don't really have a favorite, but yeah, what the poster above said. The campaign/story of FPS games nowadays suck, and too much. Multiplayer/Co-op and Online is pretty much what's worth of them. So yeah.

Favorite would probably be Battlefield 3. Don't really care for Shooter games, or FPS.

I don't like shooter games because I prefer single player oriented games with story.
But I did like Unreal Tournament.

Doom is one of my favorites, it wasn't the first FPS, but it really brought them to light. I also love Hexen, It was the first FPS to have an inventory by the way. Both of them are non-linear games. Doom having large maps crammed with secrets and Hexen presenting the player with large interconnecting maps called "Hubs" which are filled with puzzles which can be solved a number of ways. Both are fun and simultaneously challenging games that still hold up today and are still just as fun to play as they were back then. Another game that I like is Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss. It beat Doom to the proverbial punch in many ways, but it fairly obscure today.

The only game I feel like that balanced both properly was the Borderlands series and even then the MP was limited to just co-op play. However the game didn't feel linear at all, there were multiple routes to choose from and it made it enjoyable.
Did you know that Borderlands is also an Action RPG? It's really a Hybrid between the two.

Tired of FPSs in recent years. The only ones I can stand are Team Fortress 2 and a select few unique titles like ZombiU or Borderlands (which I can't finish because it got too FPSy for me).

Shooter games don't necessarily mean FPS :P
Anyway I enjoy playing them a lot. They're one of my favorite genres, I like shooting things and it's fun. I haven't tried MP for them yet, I've heard a lot of bad things on it. Battlefield, Bioshock and Borderlands are the most appealing to me.
