The first episode opens with the mysterious suicide of a high-school girl, Chisa Yomoda. Chisa-chan was a classmate of Lain Iwakura, a quiet, 14-year-old high-school girl. One of the other girls in the class has been receiving e-mail messages from Chisa-chan, and Lain discovers she also has mail from Chisa-chan. In the mail she explains to Lain that she just abandoned her flesh. She assures lain that she still is alive in the 'wired' world. After getting a new 'navi' and adding a 'psyche' circuit, Lain spends more and more time in the wired. It seems that Lain has at least 2 personalities, and Lain's first personality is changing even now. Who is lain? Who are the 'knights'? Can the wired influence the real world with a prophecy? Is the real world nothing but a hologram of the information in the wired?

    ---------------------------------------

I just bought the first two DVDs for Lain today, episodes 1-7 out of 13, and it is one of the most bizarre animes I have ever had (Boogibop Phantom tops Lain just by a little). The words to describe this Anime, I don't think have been created for use yet, or are too horrid to use. And I understand now why they put Ages 16+ on the front of the boxes...but overall, this Anime rocks. It. Is. Awesome.

You know you can summeryize the whole thing as
    SPOILER**************

Lain is jesus of the new world and fought god for the ability to save the humans again.

Yours seems pretty spoiler-y, blue - how 'bout a warning next time? =\ And please try to contribute a little more to the topics, such as your thoughts and opinions instead of just contradicting everything in the other posts, okay?

I've only seen the first 3 or 4 episodes, but I really like the anime. It's nothing like anything else I've watched before... it's much darker and more mature. ^_^ I really love it~

ya but he did have the whole idea of it wrong i dont wanna seem mean but i really dont think he got it...

It seems fairly accurate considering he's seen the first 7 episodes only? Like I said, I've only seen about 3 episodes, but that describes what I've seen pretty well. =\ If you disagree, how about putting a little more detail into your summary because yours was pretty vague and didn't really mention any side details of the plot and stuff...

    *might be rambling* ._.

    Well....
    SPOILER************

It just seems with that man that came and claimed he was god and wanted lain to join him again and she wanted to save her friend it seemed like a allegory for good and evil

    God I love this series

All of the source material and figures they use are real except - misami eiri... jumping of from that fanatic Anton Wilson, Karlov and the shuman resonance... and Lily where they use his sensory deprivation experiments(altered states anyone?) to, I think, omit Leary's contribution- too obvious and risky(considering his having dragged every expert and literati figure into the court case where he got caught with an ounce of grass in 69' -which is why no research can be done on any of botanical substances in america -not so in canada, the writers picked their references carefully -I'd like to think they omitted leary for similar reasons!)

    any thoughts?

Anyway, has anyone put together as I JUST did, that Eiri sacrifices Chisa first - to get his message to Lain, and that's why in the end Chisa takes lains place... It was always meant to be Chisa!

Just watching it for then nth time!

Wow, this is a very old thread. Please don't bump anything that's over a month old, let alone several years. If you'd like to continue this discussion, simply create a new thread.
