Scald

Smogon has been having a lengthy discussion on Scald. It has been the most controversial move in OU for two generations, aside from maybe Baton Pass. The problem with Scald is that there few methods of avoiding the burn damage it inflicts. Clefable, Gastrodon, Toxicroak, Seismitoad, and Jellicent are the only viable OU Pokemon that are immune to Scald's burn. Starmie, Chansey, Celebi, and Roserade can heal themselves automatically, whereas Mew and Mega Altaria can use moves to do the same. However, they can still receive burn damage. In that case Scald is like an extreme version of damage rolls with a chance of getting lucky and nabbing more damage. e.g. Scald can deal a similar amount of damage as Hydro Pump in one turn if it inflicts a burn, all while having perfect accuracy and crippling the Pokemon. Scald's distribution is widespread, compared to Lava Plume and Sacred Fire which are limited to Heatran and Entei, respectively.

What are your thoughts on Scald? Do you think it's unhealthy for the metagame?

Well yeah what u said pretty much sums up.Also scald affects switching to a greater extent cause of the fear of burn. Also mons like keldeo who already have a high special atk simply spam scald for the length of battle and burn 2/3 mons and wear them down, in which one can be a check to that said pokemon. If u dont have a status remover than its very hard to bring in a physical attacker in. Scald damage+Burn=RIP for that physical attacker.

Getting burn chance of scald from 30% to 10% might do the trick.I dont think theres a need to ban scald.Acc. to me a decreased burn chance might do the trick and make it a reasonable move which can be a great asset to punish bad play

There's also the fact that Scald is a Water move, meaning you can't try to sponge the burns it could cause with Fire types like you can against Wisp/Lava Plume/Sacred Fire. idk

It can singly dent holes in a poor build team.
That's not really something in favor of a Scald ban though? If your team is bad, your team is bad and Scald is probably the least of your worries.

Yeah that sentence wasnt supposed to be there. It was already in the last line.:p

I Think it is just fine in OU. Most of the time, it doesn't do that much damage for me, and I rarely get the burn. Thats why I rarely use scald.
