Ok, so I want to transfer my Skarmory over to my Diamond, but I don't know if I should teach it Rest or Roost when I trade it over. I know Roost leaves you vulnerable to Ground attacks for a turn and Rest lets you sleep for 2-5 turns unless you have a Chesto or Lum Berry. So which would be a good choice for my Skarmory?

Well rest also cures status problems so thats something to think about.

Rest does cure all status problems but id go with roost so you wont have to wait 2 turns to attack or haze. That is unless you use sleeptalk!

I would go with Rest. It can save you.

roost is better. it's not like skarmory is afraid of toxic as it is immune. will-o-wisp has poor accuracy in 4th gen so it's rarely used, and paralyze hardly affects skamory as it was never known for speed and it can take an extra hit or two when parahax sets in.

Roost if it is all on it' own; if it's with a Special Wall like Blissey to cure its sleep status with Aromatherapy/Heal Bell, then go for Rest. Roost is safe tho.

The only danger with Roost is if you use it on an Earthquake. But seriously, what are the odds of that? Nothing, that's what.

Make it slower than whatever you fear, if possible, and go with Roost. That way they plan on hitting you with a super effective attack, thinking that since you'll use Roost first, you'd lost your flying type, and be vulnerable to things that hurts steel but flying prevents.

a STABd Earthquake from something that is slower than Skarmory, let's say Rhyperior, would most likely do a good 55-60% to skarmory. so if you think about it, when you have used Roost that turn anyway, you will probably have about 10-15% HP already in store, leaving you with about 5% left after an EQ from Rhyperior, then, you'd of course learn your lesson and would Whirlwind it away (unless whoever you're battling is pretty smart and they decide to use Stone Edge).

nonetheless, most straight on Physical sweepers that come into Skarmory hoping to get a Roost-Quake opportunity have Swords Dance anyways. Whirlwind is what makes Skarmory even better.

Why would anyone try to EQ it anyway? Using it in hopes that Skar use Roost seems foolish to me.

it's strategic. not foolish. thing is, there is so many different levels of battlers and how they think, whether they like to stall to keep all their pokes at the best health they can (hence using Roost when a Rhyperior is out), or trying to cause as much damage without having to put the overall team at risk (hence predicting a Skarmory to use Roost when its HP is below the 50% mark).

besides, Rhyperior would need to use Swords Dance twice before it could do considerable damage to Skarmory with Stone Edge, and with the obviousness of this, the Skarmory user could just Roost on the first turn, Whirlwind on the next.

I see. So its more than I thought.

Roost for me. I'd only use rest if I had a Chesto Berry, but then you can fall asleep again. Plus Rest can take up like 3 or 4 moves that could be used for other things.
