Rock Smash

Between Gen 2 and Gen 6, Rock Smash has various purposes besides being a move to use in a battle.

  • In all the Gen 2 and Gen 3 games, the move is used to break rocks within the game world, and sometimes breaking a rock causes wild Pokémon to appear
  • In DPPt, the move can still be used to break rocks, but wild Pokémon will not appear when doing so
  • In HGSS, the move can still be used to break rocks and besides once again having the chance to encounter a wild Pokémon, also has a chance of finding certain items such as Fossils and Shards
  • In B2W2, if a Pokémon in your party has Rock Smash, you can use it to clear boulders in Clay Tunnel by talking to one of the Workers near the boulders
  • In XY, rock smash has a similar purpose as in HGSS, allowing players to encounter wild Pokémon and find certain items

How often do you use Rock Smash in these games?

Besides when its usage is necessary to progress in the game, I liked to use Rock Smash frequently in HGSS. It was the easiest way to find Shards and Fossils in all of the Gen 4 games. I've previously traded alot of the Shards over to my Platinum file so that I could give them to the Move Tutor in order to get certain moves for my Pokémon, like Fire Punch and Earth Power.

Perfect example of an awful HM.

It's like...around 20 power. It can drop defense but that's not even worth the amount of low power.

It has 40 power, which still isn't great considering the attack isn't guarantee to lower the opponent's defence.

I never use the move in battle, I only use it for its purpose outside of battles, particularly in HGSS where you got some pretty good items from using Rock Smash. You could even get Max Revives from smashing breakable rocks, albeit rarely.

if rock smash had like 60 power i can see it being useful on technician 'mons, especially with the def drop. alas, that's not the way of things.
