sorry for making a thread to ask one question, but there doesn't seem to be an ask/answer thread for this section of the forum board.

anyway, i want to train a new hypno with swagger and psych up. i want to be able to use swagger to increase the attack and confuse, but then use psych up to copy that stat change. can psych up do that? when i look at the description for psych up, it only says it "copies the foe's effect". does the foe have to change its own stat in the same turn for psych up to work?

oh... also wanted to ask another thing. it says that in fr/lg, it can learn nightmare, but it has a dash for the level as if it's born with the move. however, it's not, and isn't listed as an egg move. i raised two of my hypnos higher than level 70, and they never once learned it... so, does that mean that it actually is an egg move?

    A-hem...

Question One: Yes, you can copy swagger's upped stats with Psych Up. Psych up copies any stat change of the foe, whether it happens to be good or bad. However, the Psych Up/Swagger combo is useless in actual competitive play, so don't take it out of in-game.

Question Two: If there is a dash by the move, that means that the Pokemon has it at level one. You can't get nightmare by breeding, but you can learn it from the move tutor. Nightmare isn't exactly a move worth going for, though.

Though swagger + Psych UP isn't too useful 1v1, you can do a number of things with it in double battles. You could Swagger a special sweeper than copy the stats from that, or swagger your physical sweeping partner (who should have a persim berry) and copy those stats.

HOWEVER, Hypno is not the one to be using this strategy.

Hmm.... interesting thoughts on Double Battling. I'll have to remember that... I know I'm not the one to first pose the question, but just for reference purposes, can you suggest a Pokemon that would be good for a Swagger/Psych Up combo?

Probably something like Gengar and Slaking/Tauros.

thanks. i wasn't planning on using that strategy for GBA, i wanted to try something new for D/P. i already have a pretty awesome hypno on GBA (i don't play NetBattle), but i was looking at hypno's natural moveset for D/P, and with a good sp def and attack (ev trained), i think that it could be pretty good with reminiscent headbutt and a psych up/swagger moveset.

and umm i agree, nightmare isn't all that great, but it's worth trying. i was thinking it could make some use against steel, dark, and psychic foes with a hypnosis/dream eater moveset.

Hypnosis + Dream Eater has always been somewhat of a poor choice because of an opponent's ability to switch immediately. I wouldn't recommend it.

right, and let's say they switch out to a poke that would completely destroy that specific hypno. what would i do? switch out, of course ._. -- if they switched out to let's say a psychic, dark, or steel poke with which hypno could contend, then there goes a solution. i'd rather have a move that takes 1/4th hp each turn while asleep then depend on actually attack moves to handle that poke. for that specific moveset, i'm thinking barrier would be a good final move. if the foe has the ability insomnia then i'd know then, and if not, lesson learned.

there may be plenty things wrong with this thinking but i hate the whole battling run-around. forget wasting 20 minutes on one battle. experimentation should be the drive beyond all other things.

Swagger + Psych Up really doesn't work on anything except for Stantler, where even then it doesn't work as well because of Intimidate. Just use Psych Up Regice if you want to use Psych Up.

I do experiment with things, but sometimes things are just common sense. Since this is in-game, There isn't too much wrong with Dream Eater, but competitively it won't work well. Personally I'd use Moves like Calm Mind, Psychic, Reflect, and Light Screen.

i also meant to ask another thing... is barrier a simple stat increasing move or is it also destroyed by brick break?

It's a stat increase. Brick Break only affects Reflect and Light Screen. Still, Reflect is better since it's an instant halving of physical damage and remains even if Hypno is switched out or KOed.

Oh, and, about Nightmare... Though Hypno won't get it as a result of training or breeding, it can re-learn via the Move Tutor. (Just like the Heart Scale guy in R/S/E.)
