    [PokeCommunity.com] Professor Kukui

Professor Kukui is the resident Pokemon professor of the Alola region. He welcomes the protagonist to the Alola region after he/she moves to the region from Kanto, and he also studies Pokemon moves. He is known to often take direct hits from the Pokemon's moves if he thinks he can learn something about them. Alongside the Island Kahuna Hala he also gives the protagonist and Hala's grandson Hau their starter Pokemon.

So, what do you think of Kukui? What do you think about his study of Pokemon moves?

    he's hot stuff.

Serious note, he's pretty cool. Can't really say we know all that much into his research, it will probably become clear as we progress through the game. Right now though, I like his style, his design and I'd go as far to say he's up there in my top three.

I didn't know that about his "learning style", that's hilarious!
Reminds me of how Blue Mages learn enemy skills.

I actually found that out on a Bulbapedia page for him. It is an interesting way to learn about Pokemon moves, but I love the idea and how much it cracks me up. Hopefully we'll see him bring it up a few times in the in-game dialogue.

That Rockruff is so darn adorable. I stare at him for like a good 5-10 minutes. lol

Anyway, Professor Kukui approach on learning Pokemon Moves is very intriguing to me. It's a very dangerous way to do research that way, but that's the reason why I like him. He's willing to take a risk to gain some experience.

I like how we still know very little about Kukui himself besides what his specialty is. I wonder if there's more to him other than that?

I actually like how we don't know much about him, but I think that's been the case for all professors until the game release. One of my hopes for Kukui is to see him have more involvement in the story since I feel the other professors weren't very involved, and hopefully he has a good amount of personality as well.

It would be cool if he had a second Rockruff, and battles you with both of them at first, and then later in the game he battles you with both forms of it's evolution?

Actually now that I think about it, it would be cool if he gave you a Rockruff, since technically Hala gives you your starter Pokemon.

It'd be even more awesome if he was actually challenging to face. Imagine him having a post-game team that's harder than the Champion fight! That's something I'd like to see. n.n

From a guy who studies Pokemon moves, surely he has to be at least a semi-decent battler?

I definitely second this. If he studies Pokemon moves, I do hope he'll at least be a decent battler. I know Sycamore was battled a few times in X/Y, but I'd love Kukui to go further and actually be a postgame battle with a strong team.

If we do get to battle him then I hope his team is more well rounded than Sycamore's. Idk, having the three Kanto starters on a team is pretty generic, it would be nice to see more of a mixture of Alolan Pokemon for Kukui.

Kukui picking up the remaining starter seems not likely though. Either the third starter pokemon is abandoned forever or will be picked up by other "hidden" rival which is the opposite gender protagonist of your choice. What I meant is Rosa and Ethan from B2W2, they appeared once (In front of Battle Subway) and uses the starter that main character and Hugh didn't use.

That aside, maybe Kukui will give us another starter set? Hala did give us our first Pokemon after all, so Kukui could give us second set, like how Sycamore give us Kanto starter set. The speculation of Johto starters having Alolan/Mega forms might give Kukui a reason to battle us... Although it'll just be a copycat from Sycamore...... At very least we get to battle him~ ^^

The Johto starters don't get enough love, I would love to receive them in this game in the same way we got Kanto starters in XY. Megas would give them a huge boost in competitive too.

B2/W2's male protagonist was Nate if you were wondering. Ethan was HG/SS (or at least that was his new name as of that game).

What's very interesting to point out is how we don't really see the other protagonist in any sort of trailer at all. :o It really gives me the impression that either they're hidden or Game Freak is going to opt to not include them in the games at all.

Although, now that you bring it up, I wouldn't mind Kukui giving us a second set of starters. We've already gotten Kanto from Sycamore, so I suppose Johto would be the logical direction to take. Or maybe Sinnoh, perhaps?

I think we're likely not seeing the opposite-gender protagonist show up, which makes it the first time the other protagonist doesn't appear at all since FR/LG. 5th Gen had its other protagonist not chosen appear as the NPC partner in the Battle Subway (B2/W2's Nate/Rosa also battles alongside you against Emmet and Ingo in Nimbasa City). The only other possibility I could see Elio/Selene (remember these are their placeholder names since we won't have their canon names until after release) appearing as the NPC partner in multi battles in the typical battle facility. And that kinda makes me sad, because that means the starter that you and Hau don't choose is going to rot in Kukui's lab for the rest of the game.

As for the possibility of Johto starters, I am kinda doubting it since getting the Kanto starters in X/Y was mainly to show off their Mega Evolution. Since the Alolan Forms are going to be Kanto Pokemon only, it's pointless.

Hmm, Professor Kukui study Pokémon moves by taking direct hits from them? Why do I feel it's almost like Prof. Oak's modus operandi in the anime at times? I think Kukui will be one of the interesting professor to look out with, and I hope he will play major role in games as well, I'm wondering if he will be involved in Z-Moves studying of some sort.

I wonder why Hau gets the weaker starter ? I hope that doesnt mean that the games are gonna be as easy as XY were..

As much as I hate to admit it, this will probably be the case. We have seen evidence so far of Sun & Moon doing a lot of newcomer pandering, such as the active a stat changes bar and type matchups being visible on the interface during battle. It's also very likely the Exp. Share will return in its 6th Gen incarnation as well.

Game Freak have been making Pokemon games more friendly to newcomers, and that was part of why the Exp. Share affects the whole team in 6th Gen, gaining half the EXP while the ones who take part in the battle get the full EXP.

I don't understand why we can't choose the difficulty level when beginning a new game , so frustorating
