POKIMALS! - A Roguelite Adventure

Deal with the strange and insane inhabitants of The Island as you explore a series of ruins that were discovered beneath the surface.

It's your 13th birthday, so the government says you're old enough to die in a hole! (It's all in the name of adventure, so it's cool.)

Pick from one of 13 starters and make your way into the depths of The Ruins. Defeat 5 critters and the door will open, and the ruins may give up some of their loot. Do you use it to boost your team or sell it for supplies? As you defeat your instructors at The Site, you'll unlock more ANIMALs in The Ruins as well as more resources for your excursions!

Use a clean, Version 1.1 Pokemon Crystal ROM for patching.

Features:

• 251 ANIMALs (Fakemon based on real world things) with brand new pics and Dex entries
• A completely original soundtrack
• Randomized dungeon runs so that you'll never have the same trip twice
• Multiple bosses to defeat
• Leaders (Teachers) can be fought in any order and scale accordingly (but you have to pay a scaling fee; Education ain't free, you know!)
• Teachers can now have any ANIMALs from their type specialty
• Scaling enemies and level cap so there's always a challenge
• NPCs with randomized dialogue that pull from hundreds of sayings, quotes, and one-liners
• Character pics with their dialogue like most modern 2D RPGs
• A goofy, sarcastic tone to everything (I'm sorry if you're not a fan.)
• Appearances by various celebrities, including beloved President, Abraham Lincoln!
• A real, working cigarette item! (Your animals will look so cool!)
• Redone UNOWNs as actual letters
• An easter egg that explains what happened to your dear ol' dad
• Unique Animal Ball colors
• Muted Pokedex color
• A third gender option (Dinosaur, the third gender is dinosaur)

WARNINGS

This game features foul language, tobacco use by underage animals, sexual themes, animal violence, and frightening images of pixelated ghosts. This game should not be played by people who are pregnant, nursing, or may become pregnant nurses. Viewer discretion is advised.

UPDATE 1/14/2025:

I wanted to make a separate post as I've made a ton of bug fixes that (I hope) fix everything and make everything playable, from beginning to end. Special thanks to user "Blue Suede Goo" as they wrote up and found a bunch of the bugs I'd missed.

As of now, the following problems are fixed:

• All boss parties working correctly and patched the issue where beating the boss of the machine ruins looped you back to the flame ruins
• Fixed the loop in the flame ruins that would send you back to the stone ruins if you chose the heal path. Also fixed the battle with Lara, so that works correctly
• Fixed the glitches with the ruin bosses parties so that they don't show up as like level 250-ish, plus fixed it so you can catch all the LETTAHs without the game shitting itself; Also updated some sprites for clarity
• Fixed a couple of minor bugs with the room counters and shinies, but also added a fourth stats page that displays the base stats of the ANIMAL and its current happiness level
• Fixed the soft lock in the shiny rooms
• Made the officers leave after you have all 8 badges
• Fixed the graphical and text glitches from when you try to buy TMs or held items in the Site's Mart
• Fixed the graphics glitch that takes place when talking to the DayCare man after getting the Odd Egg
• Fixed the crashing in the Fire Ruins in the cross-shaped room
• Fixed the crashing in the tri-branch room in the Machine Ruins
• Fixed so you can actually battle the Barghest in the tower instead of a second Yeti
• Fixed the text glitch in the Game Corner that was making the words appear as what the other clerk was selling

So sorry! I realized I forgot to update the patch on here. This is the most up to date patch and fixed that issue, the unintentional loop of Ruin C back to A, and some other odds and ends.

I found a shiny Raccoon in Ruins A (a door appear in the middle wall along with the 2 normal doors on the side) and can't get out because I stupidly saved in the room.

Prevented Progress:



Even if you battle all of the instructors and obtain their badges, the guard still won't let you though. There is a way to bypass them through the use of a Walk Through Walls cheat. The following cheat codes together seem to work on this ROM Hack:

9100F9C2 9100FAC2 9100FBC2 9100FCC2 9100FDC2 9100FEC2

This is a combination of 91 versions of the Pokemon Crystal Walk Through Walls cheat. They were derived from experimenting with ways to use a Walk Through Walls in another Pokemon Crystal ROM hack (Fool's Gold) and surprisingly work here as well. Two of the codes are redundant, however.

* It should also be noted to turn off these codes after using them or the first battle will hardlock the game.

Messed up Purchasable items:



When attempting to buy from the Salesmen that sell TMs, the products sold become broken after obtaining 8 badges. This results in some of the TMs becoming unobtainable. They can be bought using the following cheat codes:

01E1F3D0 for TM 33 Ice Punch
01ECF3D0 forTM 44 Rest
01EFF3D0 for TM 47 Steel Wing
01F0F3D0 for TM 48 Fire Punch

01xxF3D0 can be used while replacing xx with a specific index number of a specific item (e.g. Master Balls can be bought for free using 01 in the xx spot).



This also occurs with the Salesman in the store that sells held items for Animals, but it is less problematic.



Furthermore, after purchasing from the right casino clerk, the items turn into the products sold by the left casino clerk.

Broken sections in Areas C and E:



In Area C, there is a plus-shaped section that causes a loop in a way that makes you keep fighting Animals until you Pass Out. It can be avoided through saving the game prior to loading up a new section so it doesn't show up.



Also, Area E's middle section that contains a shiny causes a hardlock once you walk into entryway. Also, one reward box gets placed randomly to the left for some reason instead of blocking the middle like other Areas.

Raikou Barghest getting replaced by a second Yeti:



If you used the Cheat Code to walk around the guards, defeat the Elite 4, and make it past Area F, one of the legendaries, Barghest, is unobtainable. When initiating a battle with it in the overworld and despite showing its sprite, the battle turns out to be a second Yeti that's at the level the Barghest is suppose to be at. Without another way to catch the Big Dog, you must resort to the following cheat code:

01F306D2

The F3 portion summons Barghest and can summon anything should the F3 be replaced with the matching index number of the right Animal. It's a modified version of 01xx04D2 that normally changes the wild encounter of a regular Pokemon Crystal game.

I did play on VisualBoy Advance for Mac since BGB (The standard for GBC games, Pokémon Crystal hacks included)) is unavailable without a compatibility layer or some expensive software for Mac computers.



Also, I forgot to mention that the Day Care Man is glitched but functional. If you don't pause the game, the screen moves to the bottom left with colors going haywire.



While pausing the game fixes the screen moving, the text boxes have the text themselves highlighted blue. The Day Care Lady doesn't seem to glitch at all.
