In the anime they never really specify whether the pokemon belonging to a certain character is male or female, but it is usually easy to tell. Like Pikachu is male, and Dawn's buneary is female (at least I think so :\) so I guess this thread is dedicated to figuring out the gender of the different pokemon in the anime (whether they are pokemon that a character used to have, or a pokemon belonging to a character no longer on the show)

I don't think they really care. Either that, or they're trying to keep you guessing, like you are now.

Sceptile, Tododile, Corphish, and Ludicolo are all male. They all liked a girl pokemon at somepoint (it usually all ended badly for them).

Ash's Butterfree was also male because I don't believe a pink butterfree would be.. male.. >_>

4Kids are idiots, they gave Lugia a male's voice, thus made it hard to understand how the Lugia laid an egg.

In the anime, there was an episode where there was a Lugia cub and talk about the parent Lugia having babies was also mentioned. However, the anime is false. It contradicts many of the boundaries and laws (so-to-speak) that the manga and game have established. And if you're going to believe in anything about Pokemon, believe the manga/game.

Bakc on topic, there are also some Pokemon that can be seen as either male or female without its appearance discriminating its gender. Flygon, Kanghaskan (sp?), Pikachu, Pichu, Plusle, Minun, Teddiusa are a few examples that could all equally look male or female. Obviously, most of them are in their first and second stages, but that shouldn't matter.

Based on how they have been called in the japanese show, and the gender diff. -

    Piplup - Male
    Pachirisu - Male
    Buneary - Female
    Staravia - Male
    Sudowoodo - Male
    Croagunk - Female
    Pikachu - Male
    Aipom - Female

    Can't remember turtwig

i know that ash's bayleef is a girl cuz one time profesor oak said "i think you bayleef has a crush on you"

Or it could be gay, you know. After all, they have characters like James and Harley...

Just kidding; I think Bayleef was one of the first Pokemon in the series that was completely obvious of its gender... the thing practically humped Ash's leg the whole time.

    Kanghaskan (sp?)

    Kanga is female only. :p

And there could be two Lugias, yes? Since they breed and all, I'd assume the one Jiri wants is not the only one.

Maybe it's a hermaphrodite and mates with itself to produce a baby when it's about to die?

I'm sure Aipom's a female, as I think May says so in one episode. (Japanese)
The characters obviously addressed Grovyle/Sceptile as a "he" in odd pokemon out, although most of us already knew that he was male.

well ashs charizard is a male cuz it had a crush on Lizas charla ^^
