The Game Boy Advance title Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team is headed to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on August 9, 2024.

Nintendo revealed the news on X/Twitter, confirming that the roguelike Pokemon spin-off game that sees the player character turn into a Pokemon and go on a grand adventure is about to return.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team was first released in 2006.

Of all the games to pick, why this one? We already have it on switch as rescue team dx. Strange. It's a good game but the gen 3 games and gen 1 remakes would've been better picks.

I too wondered this. I theorize Nintendo will purposely avoid mainline pokemon titles and try to rerelease them behind further paywalls.

I think they feel mainline is leaving money on the table, look at how well gens 1 & 2 sold on 3ds. If they wanna be nice and go a route everyone would probably be fine with. They could add 1 title from each gen to their subscription service e.g. Red, Gold, Sapphire, Leaf Green on their apps and list the others separately available for purchase. That way everyone who subs would have access to one if they want to play it. But they'd still probably sell a fair amount on the other versions from the hardcores who would pick up all versions. & also people who don't wanna sub but just wanna buy those specific games outright. That's probably what nintendo's thinking anyway, they defo value the mainline games too highly to approach this haphazardly. That said, people will probably always complain no matter what they do.

All that aside, in response to RRT, one of the best games ever made. Life changing game I've replayed and beat countless times including a full dex recruitment run (what a nightmare mew is, and some of the later dungeons). I'd happily replay it again on switch too. It really doesn't deserve the amount of strays and hate it got just for not being the mainline games. Feels like an entitled reaction to me, to what is otherwise a great addition to the service that you could easily sink many many hours into.

I hope we get the mainline games in some form soon too, just wish RRT didn't have to become the conduit of these frustrations, and could've had more of it's own moment...it deserves it...I wish for more people to discover this gem on switch!
Also as someone who played & loved RRT this much, DX just isn't the same. I always revisit the OG, but just barely finished DX once, and doubt I will be replaying any time soon...maybe it somehow has less charm and appeal despite the QoL stuff.
If you own a switch, the service, like pokemon & have never played it; please give this game a shot!
(i know there are actually a lot of switch owners who fit all that criteria, I just wish this drop could've been more about this masterpiece reaching those people and getting a second lease of life, rather than having that moment hijacked to vent frustrations about a lack of mainline games on NSO)
