    Hey guys!

I am trying to think of perfectly balanced type trios like Grass, Water, Fire. I wanted to create my own starters using a different type trio, but I can't seem to think of 3 types that interact in the same way as these three.

Can anyone think of some type trios that would work for starters? :D

How 'bout Rock, Flying, and Fighting? Not as perfect as Fire, water, and grass, but I like it

Actually you can't make a perfect triangle by Pokemon's Standards unless they all go one way for weakness and reverse for resistance.

Psychic -> Dark -> Fighting isn't a perfect triangle because Dark is immune to Psychic which makes the triangle unbalanced. The same with Water -> Electric -> Ground.

As for Bug -> Poison -> Psychic...Bugs aren't weak to poison nor do they resist Psychic.

Rock -> Flying -> Fighting is the only other one I can remember right off that doesn't use one of the original three starter types. I think there is one other combination, but it uses Grass Type in the Triangle.

Do you mean Ground-Poison-Grass? That would be interesting, but a Poison-type starter would be hard to work with for the rest of the game. They kinda pale in comparison to the more useful types that you start out with. Plus, like you said, Grass is already in the original type trio. Although I suppose picking that starter would be a nice challenge for veterans and Poison-type fans alike.

But since you mentioned it, I think a Rock-Flying-Fighting trio would work. They were all physical types before the fourth generation split, so it would make sense. The only problem is, most Flying-types are part Normal, so it would put the Flying-type starter at a disadvantage. In addition, there are no pure Flying-types apart from Tornadus, and you wouldn't want that as a decent starter, would you? We can't have an inexperienced ten-year old harnessing the powers of a wind god.

Of course, you could pull a Bulbasaur and give out a dual-typed starter at its unevolved level 5 stage, just as long as it's not part Normal. However, I couldn't think of a three-stage part Flying-type that doesn't place it at an advantage or a disadvantage in this trio. I feel as if no such Pokémon would fit the bill, at least given the current selection of Pokémon that we know about.

For type trioing, you can't get any more balanced then Dragon, Dragon, and Dragon.

Wow, you guys are pretty damn brilliant. Thanks!

I like the Rock, Ice, Grass idea... although I don't really want to use one of the original types. Rock, Flying, Fighting is pretty cool though!

Why not use Rock, Ice, Ground or Steel Ice Ground? Those are pretty interesting combos.

Or instead of Rock, Flying, Fighting, you could use Ice, Flying, Fighting.
The only main problem with using ice is that it won't resit whatever it's strong against in the triangle. :/

Precisely. It's a really important trait that the original type trio has, which is why any similar trio with an Ice-type in it wouldn't have the same effect. That includes Rock-Ice-Ground, Steel-Ice-Ground and Fighting-Ice-Flying that you suggested, as well as Rock-Ice-Grass that Mr. Popo suggested. It kinda makes me want Ice-types to have more resistances, because Ice isn't as fragile as the Pokémon franchise deems it to be. I mean come on, huge chunks of ice in real life can be pretty resistant to a lot of stuff.

I've come up with another unmentioned type trio, though. Take Fire-Steel-Rock, which would be an interesting take on choosing to be mainly offensive (Fire-type), part-offensive/part-defensive (Rock-type) or completely defensive (Steel-type) with your starter. It comes with drawbacks, since Fire is a weak type defensively, Rock is a bit strong on both ends but could use more of a niche (kind of like a jack-of-all-trades, master of none thing), and Steel only hits two types super effectively, and is a pathetic offensive STAB. If you've played other RPGs that let you choose between something like that, then it might look like a familiar mechanic. It would be a fun way to implement that with Pokémon. But, you guys don't like trios with one of the types in the original trio, right? Shame. Still, it's a nice balance, if I do say so myself.

This is all just conjecture, though, so don't take my word for it.

Um Ghost, Ghost, Ghost says hi. Pssh dragon starters.

But I didn't realize all these other trio combos existed. I thought only Psychic, Dark, Fighting existed alongside the original.

Any three types that are SE can be considered a triangle, though none of them really are. The Triangles are three elements that are Super Effective and Resists against one of the other three types.

Dark is immune to psychic so its not really a Triangle as one of the points doesn't connect when you do it backwards.

I guess it depends on your definition of the triangle, but the starter triangles are all equal in the SE and NFE when it concerns the three.

None of them? Rock-Flying-Fighting, Ground-Poison-Grass and Fire-Steel Rock say hi. They all fit the criteria. Unless you meant Ghost3 or Dragon3 or some of the other suggested ones, then I agree.

But yeah, jellotime91 asked for three types that interact the same way as the original three starter types, so the presumed definition of a perfectly balanced type trio in this thread's context is precisely what you said. Although I agree that perhaps Ghost3 or Dragon3 are more "perfectly balanced," but where's the variation in that? It's like offering three Normal-types for starter Pokémon. That's no fun.

    What about Steel->Rock->Fire
Yep, I suggested that in my last post. It's a great type trio, no?

    I'd be interested in seeing a Grass/Fire - Fire/Water - Water/Grass trio.

Grass/Fire could be like a wood tree monster, like an 'ent' from lord of the rings that rubs its "fingers" together like matchsticks to create fire.

Fire/Water could be like a mutated octopus dolphin thing with fire coming out of several blowholes on its back.

Water/Grass could be like a groovy frog thing that's got sea plants growing from it to do vine whippy stuff and can just spread itself out and float on water.

Ice>Flying>Fighting Works perfectly! Only that Ice doesn't resist flying....

Has no one thought of Bug --> Flying --> Rock?
