    hi guys!
anyone of you know the origin of the word XD?

It's a trend my friend:) People are always trying to be innovative with their damn faces:p

might be from pokemon Xd? gale of darkness?

    (/).-)
    *facepalm*

XD as a smiley was used on PC long before XD the mediocre Gamecube game was made. I remember because it was an in-joke around here that people read the title of said game as "Pokemon *manic laughter* Gale of darkness".

XD the smiley is just one of the many smileys created to visually express an emotion or reaction, in this case hysterical laughter.

...it's a smilie. Turn it 90 degrees to the right and you'll notice that it resembles a face laughing with closed eyes.

Tough question, well I think it was a joke when Pokemon XD came out, I'm not sure. Or it might have been used before that. The world will never know.

Peoples' minds are designed to see faces in objects. When we see XD, we see it as a face laughing with their eyes cringed.

When you laugh hard, your eyes have a possibility of cringing/squeezing-themselves-together.

When your eyes cringe, they make a >< sort of face, or "X", if viewed sideways.
When you laugh a lot, your mouth would probably be wide open in the somewhat form of a "D", if viewed sideways.

Just to note, your eyes have a possibility of cringing when you're angry, which is where DX is derived from.

    Example of XD Face:

I don't care where it's from, I just know I like to use it! XD
I am probably the member who uses that emoticon the most compared to my total posts. XD

/facepalm; you repeated the post twice.

Anyway, the posters above me are right. XD is simply a smiley like any other ( :) :( :P :D ;O) and was invented because it looked like a face. It has nothing to do with XD: Gale of darkness.

Since this is a Pokemon forum and all, I feel obligated to explain that the "XD" in "Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness" means "Extra-dimensional".

I agree it's a ton of fun watchXD XD XD XD XD XD

I always kinda thought it came from South Park.

Yeah that would make sense, as also quite a few memes came from South Park as well.

But yeah, this emote has been around for quite some time, and has nothing to do with that game, just as people pointed out, it was funny to look at instead. I've probably used XD since 2003 probably. :)

I'm with Cherrim on this one.

And since when was Gale of Darkness "mediocre"; it's the best of the non-handheld console Pokemon games, if you ask me >.>
