Niantic sold to Scopely Games for $3.5bn

Niantic has recently been acquired by Scopely Games, the owner of games such as Marvel Strike Force and Monopoly GO!, for $3.5bn (!!). This includes all of its games, including Pokémon GO; there is the possibility for some major changes going forward.

    What do you think?

It can go either ways. And it will solely depend upon how the new company will handle the game.

The first thing which came to my mind after knowing the news is that Niantic planned this deal last year most probably, considering that they introduced Game Pass like things, which are prominent in the other games. So thinking it this way, the idea of does aligns with the deal made. So if this is correct, then there might not be much changes in the game, although this also means that there will be more Event Pass like stuffs in the future, which will award Mythical Pokemon.
This sounds bad to me, as Mythical Pokemon are the only Pokemon which are provided to all players for free via Special Research, and paid Masterwork Research for getting their Shiny Variant. Plus I didn't liked the idea of Tour Pass which was introduced in this GO Tour as well(for the free version), and the paid version was grind to get one Lucky Trinket, excluding the XL candies.
So I expect more micro-transactions in the foreseeable future.

And if think in the optimistic way, then I can say that the new company will enhance some aspects of the game as well, considering that Niantic was focused on collecting Map Data, whereas this company isn't. So "it might be" possible that some good QoL features and gameplay experience improvisation will come in the game. But these are too much optimistic! Even the original developers of the game failed to implement many of the demands from the playerbase in these 9-10 years.

Another thing is about privacy policy of the game. Because location and map data are very sensitive information as they are collected real time. Therefore, there should be clarity regarding how our data will be processed under this new company.

According to the blog of Scopely, they did told that game will remain like it was, hence it will be only matter of fact how the game will behave under their ownership. Most probably, GO Fest 2025 will be the last event maintained by Niantic, hence the new season will give us the idea regarding how Pokemon GO will turn out under this change.

After digging a bit, I found that Scopely is part of game group called Savvy Games, which is based on Saudi Arabia. After going through the Wikipedia entry, I found following information:

So what should I deduce from this.........

As a precaution, I'll definitely begin transferring my rarer Pokémon over to Home while I can still do it for free.

I'll probably stop playing Pokemon go, if scopely messes the game up with putting micro transactions on gameplay features that used to be free or if they decide to remove daily free raid passes and or remove or nerf pokecoin values. I guess all good things have to come to an end one day or another, was good while it lasted.

I mean, for those like me who have been playing Go for years without spending a single dollar, there are multiple aspects of the game that are screwed up already when you realize how much you miss by not boarding the pay 2 win train. Not to mention the other stuff you miss by living in a region with a practically non-existant player base, literally I can only do cherry-picked Remote Raids thanks to PokéGenie and the few Remote Passes I can afford with the coins my mons bring from gyms  . The free daily raid pass and premium passes are pretty much useless when you just can't win the raids that matter anyway because there's nobody in the area to play with.

It could be for better, or it could be for worse. It's a service after all, so it will have to come to an end sooner or later, I'll just keep enjoying what I can while it lasts.

Yeah, I tried Strike Force for awhile and it got to a point where I could not stand the structure any more. Beyond the introductory stages, Strike Force is definitely pay-to-play despite the transactions being optional. One simply cannot keep pace without engaging in the transactions. I love the point people made here about transferring rarer Pokemon out to Home to get ahead of things like that. Go has unfortunately been a great source for shiny Pokemon, but I may need to focus more on the main games moving forward.

Since it's funded entirely by a regime I don't have a lot of time for now, I think my days of playing Pokemon Go are over sadly. If I do keep playing for any reason then I certainly wouldn't buy another ticket or pass, I would be entirely F2P. It was a good run.

As a precaution, I'll definitely begin transferring my rarer Pokémon over to Home while I can still do it for free.

Already started the second it was rumoured! If only it didn't take so long to refill the transporter!

All good things die in due time. Have been warning against ("disrecommending" as a friend put it XD) people Go for a few years already and this latest news pretty much confirms No Go is the way to go.

Which partly sucks because outside of the normal p2p / p2w and gacha elements, the gameplay loop is quite decent and the game does bring in interesting things. It'd be interesting to see a group come up with the "Showdown" equivalent to it one of these days.

when was Pokémon go actually good genuine q

Since scopely runs Monopoly Go, I'll transfer out my shinies (Not my arcanine yet) before I have to pay 6.99 for breathing at the wrong angle
Is it really that much of a money hungry company??

Real thoughts: this is the death knell of pokemon go for real this time. Changing developers usually is a sign of profitability going down the drain. I except it to eos after 10th anniversary.

Keeping personal politics to myself, this news is a good excuse for me to finally make the push to move out my mons from Go. I was really good (in a bad way) convincing myself not to do that before "just in case" I wanted to rename some of my shinies and things like that, but yeah as mentioned by others in the thread, leaving it any longer is most likely asking for trouble.

It doesn't help that Go - Home transferring is one-way, so whatever leaves Go leaves can't return. I definitely don't want to transfer Pokémon that are being helpful to me just in case Pokémon Go disappears.

I mean, my level 40 Mega Tyranitar bro with nearly perfect IVs might be extremely valuable in Go, but in SV or other main games it would be just a normal Tyranitar no different from any other I could catch in those games. And I'm not into shiny hunting either, so if the shinies with garbage IVs I have collecting dust in Pokémon Go are lost forever I'm not going to miss them.
