Now, I am a great trainer and know alot of things about Pokemon, but this right here stumps me. I had a Hypno on my Fire Red that I raised from a Drowzee. I ported it to my Pearl version.

    A Hypno's Base Stats are...

    HP: 85
    ATK: 73
    DEF: 70
    Sp. ATK: 73
    Sp. DEF: 115
    SPD: 67

Yet, the Hypno I have doesn't really meet these stats.
My Hypno is now Lv. 60 and these are it's stats.

    HP: 187
    ATK: 124
    DEF: 111
    Sp. ATK: 101
    Sp. DEF: 162
    SPD: 120

Now I understand the high HP with a Base HP stat at 85.

With a base ATK stat of 73, my ATK is ok.

With a Base DEF of 70, 111 DEF seems kinda low.

Now THIS is what REALLY bothers me. With a Base Stat of 73, you'd think my Sp. ATK would be up with my ATK, but no. It's my Hypno's WEAKEST stat, which is unusual for a Psychic pokemon. This isn't a nature problem either. It has a Hardy nature which doesn't affect any stat whatsoever. Why is his Sp. ATK so low?!

My Sp. DEF is through the roof, but that's to be expected with a base stat of 115.

Now, A Hypno has a base SPD stat of 67, so this is another thing that boggles me. Why is my Hypno's speed greater than his Sp. ATK? Why is it better than his DEF? Hypno's SPD is it's weakest base stat yet, MY Hypno's speed is it's 3rd best stat (excluding HP). I really don't understand this. I didn't even give this Hypno any vitamins. Why it's stats are so jumbled I'll never know, but I'm using this Hypno against the Elite Four and I'm a bit concerned that it's Sp. ATK will be too low to cause any real damage.

Can anyone tell me why my Hypno is like this?

    Ah, I missed that. Whoops.

Well, did you ever battle a bunch of Zubat or something while training him?

And on your Pearl, what does the characteristic say? You know, the "Alert to sounds" thing. What does it say for Hypno?

The Characteristic on my Hypno says "Proud of it's Power".
It received all of it's training on Fire Red and it was trained mostly on Golbats, Mankeys, Primeapes, Geodudes, Gravelers, Machops, Machokes, Koffings, and Weezings. It's holding the Macho Brace. Is that why it's Attack power is so much better than my Sp. Attack?

That seems to answer it. None of them pokemon increase EVs in Sp Atk and the Machokes and Machops will increase the Attack of Hypno. Basically, without knowing it, you've not trained it in Special Attack that much but have trained it in Attack quite a lot.

Its all a mater of how you spread the EVs

Well, my Hypno was holding the Macho Brace.

Just holding a macho brace isnt enough. You're sending twice the attack EVs aswell as twice the SpAtt, so you're still putting EVs in places you dont want them. Plus the distribution of EVs is irregular- You could get a +1 boost one level and +14 the next. By level 100, all boosts will be present.

It seems to have had an Ev boost on Att. As the others said you have battled the wrong Pokemon with your Hypno. At level 60 you have time to retrain it at the old Chateux or whatever.

All this time, I have been unaware of Effort Values, and just going by type advantages.
I know all my type advantages knowing full well Hypno has a type advantage of Fighting and Poison, but all this time, the type advantages have been making the wrong stat stronger and the right stat weaker. My Hypno will STILL have a type advantage over Gastly, but does Gastly offer good EXP? My Hypno IS Lv. 60 afterall meaning it will be tough to train since it's a moderately high level.

In D/P, the Old Chateau is my favorite, as you encounter only Gastlys (1 SpAtk EV) in there. At Pokerus and a Power Item, and boom, you get like, ten EVs a battle.

Actually, if you insert a GBA game, you can find Haunters in there and if you go in the room with the picture that has glowing red eyes, wild Gengars sometimes appear.

If you want to EV train, less the exp the better. cos the less exp the pokemon gives you, the more you have to kill, therefore the more evs you get per level, therefore making your pokemon stronger. It will take time. But you will noticed a difference in the stat increases the next time you level up.

Have you guys forgotten about Individual Values [IVs]? They have even more of an impact on a Pokemon's stats than EVs do. Your Hypno must have bad Special Attack IVs, or you EV trained Hypno in Attack.

And for the Speed vs. Special Attack thing, 67 and 73 aren't a big difference, only 6 points. 6 points barely makes a difference. Either stats have a chance to be higher and lower.

This has been answered to the biggest extent it can, but questions like this should be asked in the Strategies & Movesets section in the future.
