Anyone know a good way to find out what variations of holo/reverse a card was available in for a given set? For example I have a Rising Rivals Shiftry 13/111 in reverse and I'm trying to figure out if it's part of the set or a promo (not from a theme deck AFAIK). It doesn't seem that there's a general rule as sets go unless I'm missing something, such as "there is a reverse of every card", or "there is a reverse and holo of every card", etc.

Every card in every full set since Legendary Collection, save for special holos like Lv. X, Ex, and LEGEND (among other special holos), has a reverse holo version, though for a string of the EX sets leading up to the release of Diamond & Pearl, the "reverse holo" had a holofoil picture with the set logo in the picture.

So basically the rule is, each card with a unique collector's number, save for special holos, has a reverse holo version if it is part of a full set that is the Legendary Collection or any full set printed after it. Refractor foil pictures (where the card's holofoil picture looks like it's a fragmented shine) are special foil versions of a card not usually found in sets, and only certain cards are this way. It may be worth noting that all reverse holos in the Legendary Collection are refractor foils for the reverse foil versions. Also, some cards that are not normally holofoil are made holofoil in some blister packs as the bonus card and in some theme decks, in addition to in the collection boxes.

There is no reason why there shouldn't be a reverse foil version of shiftry from RR. As Donavannj was saying, all cards from diamond and pearl had a reverse foil version, including regular holos, non holo rares, uncommons, and commons, the only exceptions being secret rares. The same goes for the arceus block and the heart gold soul silver block.

That helps. How about regular holos of commons and uncommons -- is regular holo "reserved" for rares and non-set cards, with reverses being the only foils of common/uncommon set cards, but holo rares also coming in reverse?

Well, with the commons and uncommons, I think I have seen a couple special holos of commons and uncommons, but I'm not entirely sure. Most of those were POP promos, though, not from full sets. Holo rares do come in reverse holo versions.

I know some rares (not holo rares in this case) have promo holo versions as well as holo versions in theme decks. (I may or may not have already said this previously in this thread)

It's weird. I have some commons from FireRed/LeafGreen that AFAICanTell are legit holo commons. And in that set it's really obvious since the reverses have the big shiny logo in the text box.

Though I'm looking at jennrummymeister's collection on YouTube and the "holo" commons of FRLG are part of his reverse set.

Oh yeah, there are a few legit promo holo commons. Especially if it's a card of a starter Pokemon in an EX or DP set.

    Not sure how many, though.

The reason I'm getting so picky is I'm only collecting set cards. So when I come across things I don't recognize (such as 'reverses' that would be indistinguishable from plain holos if I didn't know to call them 'reverse') I try to make sure I haven't got a promo of some sort. The more I am looking into it the more it looks like there are holos of rares and reverses of all rarities (minus the aforementioned special cards). And then within that, there are several variations of what constitutes 'reverse' (such as in the EX series). Maybe a better way to say it is there are 2 foil variations of most rares and 1 variation of most C/U.

And, for the record, before Legendary the only set holos were rares, "regular" holo, no reverses.
