I always here when ash and co. meet a new minor charecter

Ash: "Hi my name is ash ketchum and this is my partner pikachu!
    Female pro."Hi my name's___ and im a ____ pokemon trainer/corrdinator
Brock: Hi my names brock and i hope to be a great breeder!"

No last names except for ash ._. The only charecters last names who we know (aka i remember) are Gary Oak, Sam oak, delia ketchum, ash ketchum. and i think reggie mentioned his and pauls-not sure though.

So whats wrong with adding last names?!?

Technically not even Ash has a last name >__> He's just "Satoshi" in Japan. I think Professor Oak is the only one with an official Canon Jap/Dub full name ("Dr. Yukinari Ōkido" / Samuel Oak)

I guess... people are just lazy up in development, it's not like it's a critical factor to Pokemon anyways, so writers just don't take the time

I think that why the writers gave Ash a last name, but not the other characters is out of laziness. Then again, Ash has been around since the beginning, so I also think that it's not necessary to give his traveling companions (who leave him eventually) last names.

I don't see the importance of us knowing their last names, unless two characters had the same first name.

Well, most of the characters that Ash and co. come across are kinda like fillers. They're just characters made for the heck of it. And why not? Most of the characters are just insignificant and are merely there. Not for the plot or anything. For example, we've seen many trainers who say that they'll surely meet ash again or something. Nearly all of them say during the 'farewell' time that they'll meet again and battle ash. But how many of them actually meet these guys? Hardly a few.

I don't think that giving each and every minor character a last name would change anything. The characters that actually have anything to do with the plot or are of some significance can have last names, however. Then again, that doesn't make a whole lotta difference either. The truth is, pokemon isn't like other anime where nearly every guy a protagonist meets hold some sort of importance or play some sort of role.

    Conclusion: Doesn't matter.

But not all of the major characters do not have their last names revealed either. eg. Misty

Well, that's what I said. Seems like you didn't really pay attention, merv.

Thus, in the end, it doesn't really matter as far as anime like pokemon is concerned.

I always thought 4kids added the surname Ketchum for dubbing purposes. Satoshi is three syllables and Ash is one so they added Ketchum which made three. I could easily be wrong since thats just a guess though.

To clear up the last name discussion: The only MAJOR character with a confirmed first and last name is Ash. Several minor characters (Todd Snap, Steven Stone, GARY [censored] OAK, etc.) have confirmed first and last names. Tracey could also be considered major, but considering his appearances are usually just filler...

    Surnames are simply not necessary.

[jq]Most official sources do not give Brock a last name. However, several sources suggest that in the anime, his last name is Harrison. In the July 2006 issue of K-Zone Magazine, Eric Stuart was interviewed and stated that Brock's last name is Harrison.[/jq]

So, amirite? :P Can't tell if you are trying to confirm my guess or prove me wrong. :P

i was just asking y noone has last names and many people have awnsered that in their own way.

    ...XD

Summing up the all posts, I can say that the majority of us here think that last names aren't important.

In ancient Japan, didn't most commoner folks not have last names anyway and just used house names or the names of their birthplace? It's only the upper class folks who had last/family names.

Many of the characters who do have both given and family names in the Japanese anime are the ones with foreign names too, like Kid Summers and Jack (Jackie) Walker.

That's how characters introduce themselves in the anime too.

"Masara Town no Satoshi"/Ash of Pallet Town, "Tobari City no Shinji"/Paul of Veilstone City and the like.

And no, he and Reiji/Reggie have no last name.

Aww...but they're so cool! Yeah, I guess in Pokemon, they're not really needed for minor characters...for major characters, they'd only serve to add meaning to a particular character's traits or something.

That's what I figured... I just hope Ash lives up to his family's goal of "Gotta Catch 'Em All!" He's pretty far behind... :cer_laugh:

This reminds me of those Franklin twins (Forrest and Forrester) in AG014/EP288, All in a Day's Wurmple. LOL, they caused so much confusion by introducing themselves with their surname... In the Japanese version, I think it would make more sense (with Takuma the family name), but in English, it just seems weird for children to be using their surname over their given name like that...

One other "major character" with a potential surname is Gym Leader Flannery of Lavaridge Town :cer_love: ...in the anime, her grandfather was named Mr. Moore, but we don't know whether he's her maternal or paternal grandfather, so Flannery Moore is debatable. LOL, IMO it sounds so weird...they couldn't have used a punny Fire term for a more fitting surname? :cer_confused:
