I have found that hms that you need to progress through the game are completely useless for combat but take up of of your 4 combat move slots and you cannot unlearn them. Cut and rock smash do like 30 damage. Thats useless. Is there any pokemon you can find that can learn most of them so you dont have to waste them on your pokemon?

Since this isn't DPPt specific, I'm moving it to General Pokemon Gaming.

    -MOVED-

Bibarel can learn every HM except Fly and Defog, so if you have Bibarel and a Bird pokemon (Tropius, Drifblim Togetic and Togekiss can also learn Flash, TM 70) you've just about what you need.

I'm using Floatzel because it can learn Water HMs and Strength and Rock Smash

If I have Swampert, it'll have Waterfall, since it's a STAB move. I don't know about Surf though. If I ever need to go on water, I'll switch out one of my uneeded Pokémon with Sharpedo or Walrein. For Fly, I'll use Swellow or Altaria.

Some of them are kinda useful in battle, if one uses it rightly.

Bibarel and Tropius covered everything for me on my playthrough of Platinum. Bibarel had Strength, Waterfall, Rock Smash and Rock Climb (I kept Surf on a regular member of my team due to its integral importance), while Tropius had Fly, Defog and Cut.

Well Mew can learn ANY move, but since it's an event/legendary/extremly rare so it's probably best not to teach it the HMs (Although Surf, Strength, and Waterfall can be useful)....but Bibarel is probably the best HM ***** in the game (as Tribulations said a Bibarel/Tropuis duo is another great combo)

I recall using Bibarel, Marill (it can learn many of the same HMs that Bibarel can), Machoke (only for Rock Climb though) and Pelipper (Surf, Fly, and Defog FTW!) However, I'll agree with the majority and say that Bibarel and Tropius are really all you need.

And although you can't get this pre-Elite Four in Platinum without trading (and it being hard to get due to all that leveling up), Dragonite can learn almost all of the TMs. But then again, it's not as practical of a slave as the others, plus you only have four slots to work with (but then again, this goes for all good HM slaves really).

I had a Psyduck I tought a bucketload of HMs to on Silver, came in pretty handy.

    Mew xD Learns everything
Binarel Bibarel Bibarel!! Nothing Beats Bibarel!!
I lie.... Lots of thing beat bibarel..... XD
But Not many win at learning HM'S!!
    Bibarrrrrrreeeeel!!
I like saying bibarel.... I have issues XD

Bibarel, Bidoof's Evolution, is generally considered to be the "perfect" HM-Slave(learns all HMs except Fly and Defog, which every Flying-type except Beutifly can learn as far as i know), if you don't have the impossible-to-get-outside-japan-Mew, which can learn every TM and HM there is, but if you actually manage to get a Mew, you'd proably make something better out of it than a HM-Slave "/

If you don't have a Generation IV Game, then a Tentacruel and Pelipper can learn every HM in Generation III.

Or, you can just hate Defog and try to get through the Foggy routes without it(it's not that hard, you can still see pretty good), and try to put the HMs in use instead :)
A Fighting-type Pokémon can be useful with Rock Smash and Strength, as Rock Smash has a 50% chance of lowering your target's Defense, a chansey with Rock Smash and the Serene Grace ability(raises added-effect chance by 50%) would have a 100% chance of lowering your target's Defense, if it does not have the Clear Body ability.

A Floazel with its high Attack stat can use a STABed Waterfall quite powerfully, as it's Sp. Atk is much lower than the Attack, a Waterfall despite lacking 15 points power can hurt a lot more.

Fly is obliviously put on a Flying-type, and you can keep Cut on whatever Pokémon you'd like until you get to Canalave and don't need it anymore.

Bibarel is one of the best VM Slaves. Rock Smash, Strength, Waterfall, Surf, Rock Climb - he can learn nearly all VMs. Just learn some Flying-type VM Fly and one of the 5 moves another VM Slave and with only 2-3 Pokemon you have all VMs taught.

    Easy!

How to each all HMs to two Pokemon:

    1st Gen:
Tentacool/Tentacruel - Surf, Waterfall, Cut, Flash.
Noctowl - Strength, Rock Smash, Fly.

2nd Gen: same as above except teach Tentacool/Tentacruel Whirpool instead of Flash and teach that to Noctowl.

    3rd Gen:
    Tentacool/Tentacruel: Surf, Dive, Waterfall, Cut.
Tropius(Rare): Strength, Rock Smash, Fly, Flash.

    4th Gen:
Bibarel(Bidoof won't do): Surf, Cut, Waterfall, Rock Climb
Tropius(Very Rare): Defog, Fly, Strength, Rock Smash.

For cheaters: Use 2 Mews :).

I agree, Bibare takes like 6 HMs, never tried Tropius though. How many does Tropius take?

I always have a bibarel in my party because they come in handy so much all they are really used for is HM SLAVES so yeah bibarel

Tropius learns 5 Hm's and it alongside Bibarel learn EVERTHING.

    Bibarel:
    Waterfall
    Surf
    Rock Climb
    Rock Smash

    Tropius:
    Fly
    Defog
    Cut
    Strength

Ever since third gen Double Battles, SMEARGLE has been my HM Slave.

    Smeargle (Gen 3: Hoenn)
    -Fly - Dive - Surf - Cut

    Smeargle (Gen 3: Kanto)
-Fly - Strength - Rock Smash - Surf

    Smeargle (Gen 4: Sinnoh)
-Fly - Surf - Rock Climb - Defog (or) Dig

Defog versus Dig was based on how important travel to Route 224 was. I have since dropped it from EVERY Smeargle and now only Delibird has Defog.

Smeargle, in a Double Battle, can cast "Sketch" towards its partner in a Double Battle. I have a Darkrai from Ranger2 so I can get DARK VOID Smeargle. Which is cool even though Spore is preferred.

And some moves have specific strategy required. Substitute for example.
