So I recently got a free DS from a friend and I decided to get back into the pokemon craze. I am 20 so it has been awhile since I played(last since Ruby I think).

That being said, I was quickly disheartened to discover that I cant do any competitive battling or anything involving wifi with it? Which basically means it is basically the equivalent of when I had my gamebody advance and color and I didn't have friends who had pokemon to play/trade with lol.

is it worth it to play still?

Also I brought Pokémon black from Gamestop....I can take it back before January. Am I really missing much from Black 2?

I mainly like to just raise a single party and battle/train and get my badges. But am I missing anything too major to go through the trouble of exchanging it or am I fine with the normal black?

I helped you on your X/Y question so hopefully I'll now assist you here as well.

The DS wi-fi has been obsolete since last year, but that's not to say the games are still worth playing. 5th Gen is still a great generation with an epic story (especially in Black & White) and there's some decent features, and the sequels (Black 2 & White 2) have one of the largest postgame content in a Pokemon game to date.

Usually, most would recommend B2/W2 over the original B/W due to the extra features and large postgame content but that's not to say the originals are bad. In fact, B/W's Pokedex consisting only of 5th Gen Pokemon is a nice way to help you get accustomed to the Pokemon themselves. And the story is one of the best seen in a Pokemon game so far so it mainly depends on if you prefer the story or the postgame.

I agree a lot with Hika on what she said and I'll add a bit on to it. In my personal experience, one can never go wrong playing a Pokemon game as they are all worth playing in their own way. Like what Hika said, the DS wifi is pretty much obsolete but the games themselves are still so much fun to play and BW has the best storyline to date and BW2 is in the top 2 for post-game content. So its really up to what you like more.
I personally prefer the storyline and BW but thats just me, they are both great!

Actually it's good that you got black instead of black 2.
In the sequels b2w2, most of the people in the game refer to the story that happened in bw. Also the b2w2 story being greatly revolved around the bw story, you would really feel bad about missing out on.
And like @Hikamaru said, bw has only gen 5 pokemon (except for one part at the end) and bw2 has many from different regions. This would likely make you have a party full of old pokemon and lose the feel to the 5th generation. A lot of the bw features were taken out in gen 6 so i recommend you keep pokemon black and enjoy all the new mechanics.
And just so you know, pokemon bw has a good post-game as well (not as good or long but good). Plus there are a couple of legendaries from bw not in bw2. Bw2 has some legendaries not found in bw but i think there are more in bw.

If you're okay with just the Unova Pokemon, Pokemon Black should be alright for you.
