well? i need to know,if not then what is?

I'm not sure what you are trying to ask. Would you please rewrtie your question?

a tank is a pokemon that has an extremely high defense, sp.defense, and hp,
so it lasts in battle. its like an army tank.

Oh, then onix would definatly be a good tank, unless you put him up against a water type. All rock type Pokemon have very good defense.

i have to say dont waste your time with an onix...evolve it to a steelix asap.

it has more defence, special defence and i think hp than the standard onix and it also has MUCH more resistances and only 1 weekness that i can think of (fire)

its also immune to all poison type attacks so you dont need to worry about the dreaded Toxic attack killing you.

granted it looses its STAB on some nice attacks but you want a tank not a physical sweeper (whick onix/steelix suck at anyways so dont bother wasting your time trying to train one up).

as a tank onix will be good only untill you can evolve that sucker to a steelix. IMHO that is

hope i kinda helped and made some sort of constructive sence.

Onix MUST evolve... Onix's hp is completely pitiful. Steelix gains a HUGE hp boost, making it into the 360s at lvl 100 (provided that you got HP EVs). Onix is also worthless in comparison to Steelix in all ways possible, and even for a tank it's terrible, as even physical attacks crush it apart. Rhydon and Kangaskan make much better tanks than Onix.

    Onix = Excellent tank...

But it all depends on who it's up against, like:
    Grass = NO
    Water = NO
    Psychic = NO
    and any obvious others....NO xD

Against Fire types, definately a tank/ killer :D But then again, if you evolve into Steelix, you lose this ability to be a tank/killer amongst Fire Pokemon...Steelix could be too weak to try and Tank a Fire..

    Onix tanking against...

    -ANY special attackers: no

reason: all of them got more something that's SE against it

-ground types: no for obivious reasons

-steel types: no because all of them can learn earthquake, and Skarmory/Forretress can just spike in the meantime. Scizor can use the time to setup baton pass

-ghost types: you're asking to be either burnt, or be blasted apart by Gengar's special attack, so no

-normal types: almost ALL of them can learn earthquake/brick break if they're a physical attacker, so no

-flying types: NO, as all of them are armed with HP Ground. Unless you max out hp and defense, then perhaps you'll live, but then your attack power is quite low... not sure if even rock slide with STAB can OHKO some of the birdies. Your attack without any EV will be THAT terrible.

    -Fighting types: obviously, no.

-Poison types: Weezing got levitate and is a very famous annoying tank, so you can't quake it. Even if you can quake it, Weezing will still live and then burn you next turn anyway... Crobat got HP Fighting or Ground, both of them SE against Onix. There are no other poison types in use but Muk, so you're strong against Muk. Oh wait actually, Muk can also use fighting attacks or even subpunch, so no.

-Fire types: ALL of them can learn earthquake/reversal out of the usable ones. All they need is to endure a liechi, and then sweep Onix. Or heck with it, just HP Grass it already.

-Bug types: out of the common bugs, all of them got earthquake/brick break again, so Onix is still messed. Against Butterfree, Yanma and the likes, a sleep powder and a giga drain/psychic/HP Special will do it in.

-other rock types: all of them can learn earhtquake, and all of their attack power is a LOT higher than Onix, along with more hp. Onix loses this one again.

Conclusion: you can beat absolutely nothing but fellow other super NU. And if anyone feels like thinking up of a semi-usable Pokemon that Onix can defeat, I'll be glad to defend for that certain semi-usable Pokemon too.

It has a lot more weaknesses than that...Lets see...It's a Steel/Ground type, so it's weak to

    Water
    Fire
    Ground
    Fighting.

But, going back to the original topic, I don't think Onix is a very good tank at all. He takes X4 damage against water (both Ground type and Rock are weak to water, so X4) and well, most strong physical sweepers(Like Metagross) could still easily take him out with EQ or Brick Break. He doesn't have too much HP either, which is pretty manditory for most tanks, but the lack of HP and SP.DEF adds up to a sucky tank.

    nicely said
    onix has to much weakness
grass, water, fighting (these are to common of a type to have weaknesses for)
but evolving it to a steelix will limit your weaknesses and it actually can be a sweeper if known to have the right moves

Shuckle is a good tank because it has outstanding DEF, and SP.DEF (both can exceed 600)

    Dusclops is a great annoyer/tank

One of my personal favourites, is Registeel. He is a great tank because it has good HP, great DEF/SP.DEF and it is a steel type, meaning it can't be hurt by poisen or toxic (which is usually a tank's biggest weakness). Another good thing about steel, is that 11 elements are less effective against it and it only has 3 weaknesses, it's biggest weakness I'd say is the over-used EQ.

Chansey (well Blissy) can be a really good tank because of Hard-Boiled (heals her) and her outragously high HP in combination of amazing SP.DEF. Her pretty much only weakness (and a big weakness at that) is the fact her regular defense is terrible, and pretty much one Brick Break will take down Blissy's 711 HP in 1-2 hits.

Those are just a few that I can think of now, but there are A LOT more out there.

ok ive got a great tank for ya: SNORLAX!!!

ok ill explain why i think he is one of the best NON-Legendary tanks.

1: MASSIVE Hp at level 100.

    2: learns rest.
    - when you have taken over half of your life for the first time use rest..get full health and have a Chesto Berry attached. 1 turn heal move. you an also use Sleep Talk (naturally learnt) and attack whilst sleeping for those 2 turns (though its not as useful as it once was in GSC where you could rest again even when your asleep if sleep talk selects the Rest attack)

3: a very large Special Defence.
    - Combine that with a huge HP pool you can last even a strong psychic attack and rest off the damage.

4: you have a pretty good attack (unlike blessley) and can stand alone again most pokemon and beat them down with minimal worry if you use Curse to cover your sadly low Defense stat.

    5: IMMUNITY!!!!
    - this is an EXCELENT ability. it makes Snorlax immune to ALL poisons, even toxic (this is what i think makes all Steels so great, not the best but great non the less)

    Now for the bad:

    1: HORRIBLE speed stat.
    - you will almost never go first unless you get VERY lucky. this is why the down side with Curse is not really that bad cos ur going to be going last anyways 99% of the time

    2: LOW defence.
    - this is countered with the use of Curse but at the start of the match you can be taking a fair amount of damage but just rest it off and you will be ok

ok here is the set i use for him (ive not got nature of EV's cos i cant remember atm):

    Snorlax
    - Leftovers/Chesto Berry
    Rest
    Curse/Sleep Talk (if using Leftovers)
    Double Edge
    Earthquake

all you have to be carful of is Fighting types like Machamp cos you will get killed, even if you have maxed your defence using Curse.

now im sorry for this just being one pokemon but its my personal fav and i thionk its one of the best.

    Jaws....

I agree. Snorlax is a good choice. I personally prefer Lapras. It's got a ton of HP, and I can improve it's stats with items. But, like Snorlax, you must watch out for Fighting-types. (Lapras is part Ice) Snorlax is a bit better because it's got less weaknesses.

Snorlax needs Shadow Ball to hit Ghost types...

    Snorlax@Leftovers
EV: 252 HP, 129 Def, 129 Sp Def
Nature: + Att, - Sp Att
    Curse
    Rest
    Shadow Ball
    Return/Earthquake

I hate the Curselax anyway, it's so easy to beat. Try a sub-puncher:

    Snorlax@Leftovers
EV: 252 HP, 252 Def, 6 Sp Def
    Nature: + Att, - Speed
    Substitute
    Focus Punch
    Shadow Ball
    Earthquake/Rock Slide

Snorlax's slow speed works to his advantage here, giving Substitute a wall to protect you while you hit with Focus Punch, and with such high HP the Substitute can often take more than one hit. I'd prefer Rock Slide in the fourth slot to take on Flying types and Levitaters, but it's your choice.

mmm...id never considered a sub puncher snorlax...i may try that one out to see how it fits in with my current party.

    thanks for the insight toothache

    Jaws...

I dunno, Slaking, get that to lvl 100 and its got like 450+ HP and loads of defense but it always mucks about in battle, could make a good tank though

i just remembered....the longest pokemon battle ever(really)... it was against an onix(i think brock's) in Gym Leader in Stadium.... we were both down to our last pokemon, our onixes....mine rental, his computer generated.....

because we both had sucky attack and uber defense, the battle lasted over an hour(i mean for just the onixes).... i was losing, 15 HP to 27 HP(it was close)... and he pulled out a critical hit on me, bringing me down to 5....

then my turn(an average struggle for me was 15 HP against his onix; it was all we both had left, but we were close bc he had like 200 more hp than me at the begining, 200-something to 400-something it started at)... i attack, and miss.....:( i sulk in what seems like defeat when he attacks me.... 2 HP left... i had another chance yet! i attack.... crititical hit! i watch his HP go down to 0.... and the game forgets to give me recoil damage, probably bc it was his last pkmn....

    Onix? No.

It's pitful. Don't even catch one. I say get a RegiRock or something.

if you do get an onix dont use it just wait until u can evolve it and then use it (personally I think its better to evolve scyther with the metal coat and get scizor)
