Is it Marik or Malik?

    Um, should this be here or in mixed polls? Move if I'm wrong please...

    Anyway, one of the biggest debates in yugioh is if Marik Ishtar is really "Marik". My opinion on this is that it is Mariku, the 'u' is silent.
     
    It doesn't really matter, in Japanese there are no L or R sounds and their R sound is soft, like a hybrid. They don't even have separate characters.
     
    I always remembered it to be Malik back when I liked the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise. His name was spelled Malik, but it was pronounced Marik.
     
    it dosent matter the r and l in japanese have the same sound so it could be marik or malik.
     
    Malik i tend to use the jap. names of animes i know and like in japanese
     
    igh...malik and marik are the SAME thing if you watch it a lot of times he is called marik.
     
    It's really a kind of cross - technically, it is Marik, but the R sound in Japanese is soft, so it is almost like an L.
     
    It probably depends on what you are used to, having only seen the dub I am used to Marik but I get the point with the l and the r sounds.
     
    マリク is how the name is written in Japanese. When romanized, it would be "Mariku". However, as people in this thread have already stated, the sound/letter "L" does not exist in Japanese, so technically, his name should be Mariku, or since the final "u" is silent, probably Marik. But since the character is Egyptian, it makes sense for him to have an African name. That's where "Malik" comes in. It's an African name (possibly Egyptian, even) and it fits with the L/R thing in Japanese. I'm almost certain that his name is supposed to be Malik in the Japanese version. People just say otherwise because they like transliterating to the romaji directly instead of taking into consideration what the original creator meant when giving the person the name. =\

    As for me, personally, I use "Malik" when talking about him and "Yami Malik" when talking about his darker half. (In fanfiction, I use "Mariku" though). ^_^ When I'm referring SPECIFICALLY to the dub-version of him, I'll sometimes use Marik, since that's his dub name. =\
     
    I have only seen the dub, so I refer to him as Marik most of the time - however, sometimes when I'm talking very fast to my brother "Malik" slips out and my brother's going "who the heck is Malik?" XD

    Exactly what I was going to say. Not only does Malik sound more evil than Marik, but it's also more authentic to his African past. Malik is a strong, powerful-sounding African name and suits Marik much better than the name he has now. Besides, this is what I referred to him as when all we had was hist Japanese name. I'm much more used to Malik.

    At least they didn't dub him as a girl...I heard rumors long ago that Marik would be made a girl for America and given the name Lawrence or Laurel or something o_O

    I watched dubed then japanese so I use both but more R than L.
     
    it's malik, since it's not a japanese name. it's arabic(he is from egypt) for master or owner. it's like when there's someone named michael in an anime in japan. they'd say maikoru マイコル , but when dubbed in to english, we change it to the original form

    when i used to watch yugioh i always called him marik.I am just used to it.
